The beer pours an amber color with a thick frothy offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a nice pale and crystal malt scent along with a slightly aggressive hop aroma. The taste is decent as well. It has a smooth malty flavor, although it's a bit on the sweet side. The hops are quite assertive and linger some in the finish. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium/full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a pretty good stab at the style. Some may find it a bit too sweet, but I'm not offended. Like any beer brewed for the first time it needs a little tinkering. I'm looking forward to future batches.

Pours a beautiful dark Amber with a frothy off white head.

Smells of malted grain, bread, and herbal hops.

It has a rich malty flavor up front with notes of cereal grain and caramel malt balanced by a bitter herb hop punch with a dry finish.

At some point I plan to work through the entire Horseheads line-up, and I am a fan of steam beers, so Lackawanna it is.

A bright orange body has an off-white cap of foam on-top of it that leaves a few scraps of lacing.

Pretty malty nose. Toasted grain, caramel, and pale malts with touches of fruit and hops in the background.

The flavor is pretty much the same as the aroma; the malt really dominates. Lots of toasted grain, caramel, and a bit of pale malt. The fruitiness is a little more assertive, and the hops do add bitterness and a bit of a floral flavor in the finish. Overall a little too sweet and malty for me.

There is probably a little too much body for a steam beer, and that might be connected to the big malt profile, but it could be something else also. Carbonation is fine.

I like this one, but I don't love it when compared to other Horseheads beers.

A 650 mL bomber purchased at the brewery.

A: The steam beer is a brilliant translucent orange amber color, a little light compared to a bottle. A small head, about a finger in length, didn't lace as it receded.

S: The nose is very grainy, a malt-centric brew that has only the faintest of hops. Alongside the bready, a mild green grape fruitiness appears.

T: The ber is very malty, from the first sip, comforting grains greet me. The caramel and pale malts are met by a subtle hop body that lingers for a long time. The ale has as strong fruity presence, a sweetness that really contrasts with the grainy malts. The ale is very accessible, a nice full-bodied beer that doesn't come across too strong.

M: The mouthfeel is at its best when the ale is near room temperature. The sweetness of the ale is nicely paired with the grainy malts.

D: A pleasant surprise that has made for a nice Sunday afternoon. An uncommon common beer.
