This Strong Ale boasts a huge hop presence but is not a true double IPA due to its enormous malt backbone. Extremely well balanced and our most sought after beer amongst craft beer fans.

This review is not based on the premise that this is an IPA, because it most certainly is not:
Had from a pint can -
Pours a deep red, almost brown color with an absolutely gorgeous head of thick, creamy foam.
Full-bodied and thick on the tongue
Should by no means be labeled an IPA - falls somewhere between a wee heavy scotch ale and an American strong ale in both look and flavor
Has a deep, rich malt backbone, very assertive, and while the hips are present, they certainly take a backseat to the heavy quality of the beer. Aroma backs this up. Really just a great strong ale, and nowhere on the can does it call itself an IPA.
In conclusion, if you're looking for an IPA don't get this beer. If you're looking for a strong ale, definitely give this a shot. It's a fine beer

Growler filled up at Green Growler Grocery in Croton-on Hudson, NY

Pours hazed darker amber, head is slight, but fine. Leaves a tiny bubble film, a collar and better then average bands of fine lacing.

Grainy hop in the nose along with maple malts.

Flavorful brew, with waves of maple malts cascading on the palate.

Malty...yes this is a malty brew...where oh where are the HOPS?? DIPA? c'mon now...compared to whats going on in the western states and even in places like Peekskill, NY (Shotgun Willy IPA) this one is not really packing the hop crunch that is setting the standard these days. This tastes more like an imperial amber...

A: The beer is very hazy dark amber in color. It poured with a half finger high off white head that has good retention properties and hardly died down, consistently leaving a thin head covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of pale malts are present in the nose along with hints of grassy hops and sourness.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has light flavors of pale malts along with hints of earthy yeast. No bitterness or hop flavors are perceptible.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer tastes malty, but I don't get much in the way of hops. It is more like an imperial unhopped pale ale.

On draft at Dive Bar, NYC.

Poured a murky dark copper hue with a two finger frothy off white head. There was very good retention and lacing.

The smell featured an oily piney hop and some caramel.

The taste was upfront resinouse pine and citrus with a robust soft sweetness toward the finish.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a full bodied yet user friendly DIPA.

Poured into a standard pint glass fresh from the tap. A deep rich color somewhere between amber and copper, depending on the light, with a little haze in it. Nice creamy head on top, with great lacing as the drink disappears.

Very green, hoppy scent -- not overwhelming though. Belying its darker color, the aroma is floral and light, almost bouncy on the tongue. A very pleasureable nose, overall.

The brew is roasty and malty up front. The big malts it opens with are surprising (pleasantly so) for a supposedly "Super" IPA. The hops in the back of the mouth are subtle and rich, as more beer goes from front to back, it really comes into its own as a true-to-form IPA.

Mouthfeel is average but pleasing. None of the chalkiness or abrasiveness of other "Insert-Inflated-Adjective" IPAs. Very clean taste, and the deepness of the flavors from front to back lingers more than most.

This was my second pint of 8 Barrel Super IPA, and I would gladly come back for another. Extremely pleasureable, subtle, and drinkable brew. Given that this is only the second review for this brew, I suppose it's in pretty limited circulation. What a shame!

A - Deep amber, very red. minimal head, minimal lacing

S - nothing, nadda, no hoppiness

T - still getting nothing from this beer. maybe a bit of bitterness, light hop notes at the end, but still nothing. super disappointed in this beer. Not sure, if was an old keg/bad tap line or what, but I don't get this beer.

M - A little light for a DIPA, but not too bad.

D - Fine. Goes down pretty easy, could knock down a couple. Just super disappointed for the style.

Super disappointed. Saw the ratings on here and had high expectations, but came away without my hop fix.

Filled up my growler from these guys in chatham today, gives true meaning to the term microbrewery. anyone who lives in the area should stop by - if you can find the place!

A - Deep amber, with reddish/mahogany tones. Slightly hazy. It poured into my glass with a thin head, dissipated fairly quickly.

S - Surprisingly subtle, caramely sweetness with some piny hoppiness in the background.

T - Sweet and malty up front, fairly dark flavor and pretty complex. Turns into a nice tingly hop bite after a while. The flavor lingers forever!

M - Pretty much what you'd expect... a bit creamy and not too carbonated

D - The strength and heaviness of it makes it a bit tough to drink all night, but very enjoyable to sip on. Overall another great beer from this place

A little too boozy for my taste. Wouldn't call it an IPA, more like a scotch ale. Really no hop presence at all.

I had this on tap at Capital City Gastropub, served chilled in a snifter.
This was described to me as an imperial amber.
The color is dark rust with mild hazed w/ very creamy head which gives a nitro-appearance and has tan hue. The smell is creamy with a dry earthy aroma and almost musty nose which is not very appealing. The feel is creamy dry and thin with low carbonation and gentle alcohol which gets more noticeable as it warms with low bitterness in general.

The taste has a dirty yeast flavor which combines with dry malty nutty quality and dark bread in the back with pine-like but hops that lack intensity and dull almost cardboard aspect with light roast and mild dried fruit in the finish. Overall okay, but not what I expected and I would recommend anything else on tap over this to be honest.
