12 oz. bottle into a pint glass/ no freshness date

P: Coca-cola brown with 3 fingers of tan foam that forms a pretty nice crown on top. The foam is thick and creamy, dense and firm, and shows good retention before it dissipates to form a thin skin on the surface. This looks pretty good.

A: Unfortunately, the nose lowers my expectations considerably. Lightly roasted malts, fudge, and coffee are there, but the aroma is pitifully weak. Even more concerning is that same weird sourness/funkiness that I first smelled in Bayhawk Ales Chocolate Porter (see review) that is not at all pleasant.

T: Well thankfully, it's nowhere near as bad as Bayhawk Ales' porter, but it ain't very good either. The fudge chocolate is there along with coffee, vanilla, and a slight hops presence, but it's so woefully under-malted that the roasted/burnt charcoal-like malts that are there seem really thin and flimsy. Lots of mineral notes underneath with a bit of a spicy hop kick on the finish. Just like the nose promised, the flavors are really weak, uninteresting, and very underwhelming. But at least the sour/funkiness is muted more than it was in the aroma. Not very good.

M: Eel River Organic Porter is medium-bodied, but with a smooth, kind of watery thin feel along with a moderate amount of carbonation. Furthermore, it has no creamy underbelly or even a slight amount of chewiness to speak of. Exactly the opposite of how I like my porters!

Notes: Well seeing as how this is my first brew from Eel River, I have no idea if this was a bad bottle, off batch, or if the brewery just simply makes beers that aren't to my liking. Whatever the case is, this beer sitting before me is a sad excuse for an American Porter. Now I'm feeling a bit apprehensive about trying the rest of their line.

Poured into a tulip glass.

A: Cola brown with a tan half finger head that dissipates to a foam ring. Ample lacing.

S: Cocoa nibs, malts, chocolate.

T: Espresso combines with chocolate and cocoa. Smooth and robust. Sweet. A well rounded porter.

M: medium with medium carbonation. Foamy.

O: I wasn't really expecting much from this one, but Eel River really delivers a nice porter. Lush, rich, satisfying.

Pours black with a quickly fading head.
Nose shows some chocolate, a little roasted malt, some faint coffee. Appetizing.
Relatively subtle flavours, some roast and soft liquorice but little else. A bit of acidity from the roast.
Nice moderate carbonation.

Eel River Certified Organic Porter has an extremely thin, beige, cola-type, fizzy head, an opaque, dark, red-brown appearance, some visible bubbles, and suspended particulate matter, and no lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, chocolatey, dark-roasted barley malt, with a touch of coffee. Taste is of all that, with a slight vegetable note. Mouthfeel is light to medium and a bit powdery, and Eel River Porter finishes dry, powdery, rich, and mellow. Overall, this is quite good.

Pours a clear dark orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Tiny streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of roasted malt, cocoa, and cookie dough aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and slight char flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a solid roasty presence all around.

Pours a thin tan head on a light brown body. Almost no head retention.
The aroma is roasted malt. Mild, but nice.
The taste is well balanced, roasted malt, lemon bitterness and chocolate roll around together.
The texture is pretty smooth with low to moderate carbonation.
Aside from the initial poor appearance, this is a good porter.

The season of porters must have began here in San Francisco.

Winter of 2013-2014 appears to have an abundance of porters to select from.
Brewers and serving establishments are embracing this ale and its Baltic origin with robust and spirituos creations. This Eel River Porter is available year round.

A - served draft in a pint glass. Lacing present throughout embibement. Color is a rich opaque brown with flitered clarity.

S - caramel and vanilla.

T - balance of malt and hops with caramalized mocha taste.

M - full sensorary mouth coating experience.

O - easy to consume porter with moderate APV compared to its imperal cousins. Well done Eel River.
