strong amber color with a nice head of white that reached a height of around an inch and half before settling back down to earth and leaving just thin lacing in its wake, but for the style nice and a classic look. aroma of sweet bready malts and a classic caramel aroma that was cut with a touch of grain. nice and clean with a semi crisp feel

A – Off-white head settles into a medium-thick halo. Maple body.

S – Sweet orange maple layered on top of soft malt.

T – Sweet with a pleasantly carbonated bite up front. Light toasted malt with an orange maple center. Kiss of booze on the backend.

M – Bright carbonation with a medium body. Lightly syrupy.

O – A nice beer balanced on the sweet side of the spectrum. The mildly syrupy body slows down the drinkability.

Reviewed on 05/09/2009. I had this on tap at SPH. Pours a clear orange with a small white head. Aroma of sweet, corny malt, sweet apple, and sorghum. Flavor of pale lager malts up front with a sweet fruity finish. Decent, but palate is a little thin.

22oz bottle shared courtesy of TomDecapolis.

Poured a medium orange color with a smaller sized off white head. Subtle aromas of cookie dough, citrus, and all around gerneric malty. Tastes of the same doughiness with some citrus.

Notes from 6/08/06.

This beer is OLD. I've had it sitting in my cellar at least since 2006 and I bet this may be older than that.

Poured from the 22oz bottle into a standard pint glass.

Appearance- Beer pours a cloudy orange with a thick one and a half finger head of egg nog colored foam. Head sticks around for a long time and leaves ample lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell- There's a lot of perfume and floral fragrances to the hop and yeast here. This smells very nice for the style. Ample malt also balances out the nose and it smells to be very well attenuated.

Taste- Bready, biscuity and sweet with that rich floral fruity perfume also wading it's way into the taste as well. There is a very unfortunate metallic taste in the finish, thick with iron and blood, that is detracting from the overall beer. It does taste better than I was expecting considering it's age.

Mouthfeel- Smooth, creamy, fruity, medium bodied and medium in carbonation as well. that metallic twang at the end is the only drawback, and that drawback is pretty major.

Drinkability- This would be great by the six pack with less age. I really don't know why Southampton doesn't bottle it in more quantity for the drinking needs.

Bomber-bottle just purchased from Wine and Beverage Depot in Totowa for $4.49...
Pours a deep, dark-orange, ruddy, tawny, copper hue with a minimal head that left no lacing at all...
Aroma: Semi-sweet smell replete with viscous, golden honey and candied sugars...
Taste: Flavor strongly complemented the smell... Lingering, ultra-sweet aftertaste with obvious nuances of sugared candies, honey, and malts...
Mouthfeel: creamy, thick, pleasing on the palate...
Drinkability: Good level of drinkability for such a flavorful beer...
Another great sample from Southampton...

Appearance: Tarnished gold in color, pretty murky. A small head forms but doesn't retain very well.

Smell: Malty, fruity, toffee and date primarily. Not particularly aromatic, and what aroma there is isn't as clean as I'd like.

Taste & mouthfeel: Semi-sweet with some mild esters. Toffee, a bit of butterscotch, mild orangey citrus. Body is a bit thin. Slight hop bitterness in the finish, and pleasantly dry, though there's a bit of mineral flavor in the aftertaste.

Notes: Meh.

22 oz. bomber bottle poured into a tulip tumbler. A lightly hazy, coppery amber with a two finger head. Lace is spattered along the glass as I drink. No visible carbonation but wisps of bubbles on the top of the glass testify to it's presence.

Smell is sweet malt and grains. Toffee. A light floral hop presence and faint caramel. A hint of orange.

Taste is superb. More toffee sweetness giving way a parade of sweet and toasty breads that leads to light fruitiness. A clean hop bittering in the finish rounds out the malt heavy profile and leads back to a dry finish that features crackers in the back of the throat. Alcohol is barely there.

Mouthfeel is surprisingly light for a beer of this gravity. Not light in an absolute sense but not thick. Carbonation is just short of creamy and quite refreshing.

Drinkability is far too good for a beverage of this abv. Easy to drink a couple of bombers and then realize you can't walk. A great session beer with a full stomach.

Poured a burnt amber color, clear, with a thin white head atop this brew. Aroma was bready and sweet with notes of toffee and marshmallow.

More toffee / marshmallow flavor evident in the taste, with a nice malty sweetness in tow. Hops are reserved but serve to balance out the flavor nicely. Not overly interesting though. Mouthfeel is medium and well carbonated. A solid maibock from Southampton overall.

Appearance: Arrives at the bar with a hazy amber color and and mini-head that drops to a ringlet but leaves shards of lace after every sip

Smell: Toffee-influenced malty aroma

Taste: The toffee comes through up front but, to my surprise, the flavor grows increasingly peppery by mid-palate; after the swallow, the tangy pepper flavors build and add character, while the toffee backbone elements persist

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation and a prickly sensation

Drinkability: The spicy character of this brew elevates the Maibock style to a different plateau; I wouldn't want to drink a lot of it but I definitely like Southampton's take on the style
