I picked this beer up at Knightly Spirits today. It is great having that store so close during this conference!
I must preface my review by saying that I am pretty critical of Altbiers since I lived in Dusseldorf for a while, I am quite jaded. I have had the freshest of the best, so it is hard to not compare it with that flavor and disregard that they either have to make it across the water, or that it has to be made by a US micro. If the latter, the brewer needs to pay attention to every detail down to the water profile. If they do not, the beer won't taste like an Alt.
All this said, here we go...
Appearance: So far so good. The beer is a very clear burnt copper color as it should be with a bit lighter than average head that was a solid 1/2" of various sized bubbles after the pour. After about a minute, the head was showing serious signs of fading, but has not left the race yet. There is some lacing left on the glass after the head falls.
Aroma: My first impression was of some toasty munich malts and some melanoidins. There was a mild toffee characteristic that was not out of place. After the head falls a bit, there is a mild hoppy note coming out to mingle with the malt.
Taste: The flavor is clean and a tad watery, but that isn't necessarily out of style. There is some defined bitterness to this beer as there should be. I don't get any alcohol, again as it should be. The carbonation if adequate, but the malts are a bit thin and the carbonation accentuates this fact.
Opinion: This is actually a pretty good beer...for the style. It doesn't "take me there" but the bitterness and overall presentation make me think that this is the style that they were trying to hit. It isn't like a true Altbier, but that may be alleviated if there were some more cold conditioning to take place on this beer. Either way, it isn't bad and I will drink the whole bottle. I would recommend trying it if you want an idea of what the style tastes like, but you really have to go there to know for sure.
