An American brewer takes a stab an a rather obscure German style... and how does it fare?
A. Typical clear hazelnut with amber highlights. Skimpy fizzy head. Bubbly. Little to no lace.
S. Sweet black bread, metallic hops, hint of roasted grain, malty but a little on the weak / thin side. Only a hint of "stickyness" in the nose. Metallic hop note hurts this one.
T. Meh... it's... ok. Decent, but only so. Sweet, semi-roasty, thin malt beer, this is. A bit dry and sour in the finish, hop bitterness is relegated to the rear and the metallic note from the smell is still present and unwelcome. Hints of sweet German bread and nuts are here but it's all rather muted. Would be better with food, like maybe... chilli?
M. Crisp, possibly overcarbonated really... thin, semi-sweet malt finish with bitter hops lending a dry note. Not entirely great.
D. Secret Ale is barely ok. I'd like to think Southampton can do better than this, but between their lackluster IPA and Double White, I am so far nonplussed. This is frankly hard to recommend. Ah well, so it goes.

Stopped by the publick house for a bite and to pick up some IRS bottles. Ordered a flight with bratwurst. Brew arrivedin a few ounce sample pour. Copper color. Fairly malt forward with a soft hop. German crystalized malts. Nice easy drinker nothing mind blowing. Good altbier.
