2011 vintage, #286/450, split

An explosive gusher - quick reflexes and a helping hand prevented significant loss. Bright peach-orange body, some nice white foam from the explosion. Honestly, nowhere near as tart as any other berliner's I've had, though as it's a pretty obscure style that's really not a large sample. Lemony acidity, white grape, spice, grain, cut grass. Nice beer for a hot afternoon

Bottle #444 share by Javier, thanks!

A: Slightly hazy dark yellow with an enormous pillowy white head. Much lacing.

S: Lemon, wheat, faint sulfur, and a prominent lactic presence. Lightly phenolic with some pepper.

T: Lightly tart up front with lots of wheat and a pervasive lactic sourness. Lemon blends with a light spiciness. Finishes dry and lightly tart.

M: Very high carbonation and light in body.

Overall: Highly drinkable and quite enjoyable. Recommended.

Thanks to Steve for this one. Bottle #61.

Pours very foamy into a hefeweizen glass; when it settles down, there's a dense, pale head on a slightly hazy yellow and bubbly beer. The smell is crisp minerals in faint vinegar, with some citric notes and a little graininess. The taste is a little sweet upfront, more like corn than sugar, with a mild sourness through the middle and a hint of bitterness at the end. It's quite fizzy, which offsets the full body quite well. An excellent beer, though not quite as tart as I'd hoped it would be.

Bomber from the 2012 release, poured into a medium-sized Duvel tulip. Big thanks to Dan's friend Mike for sharing this one.

A: Tons of floaties in a yellow-orange body under a fluffy, inch-thick white head. Mediocre retention, almost no lace. Kinda not good.

S: Sourness right off the bat, with grapefruit, chalkiness, and passionfruit. Unique and hugely enjoyable.

T: Lactic sourness, solid fruitiness, and some long, chalky minerality. The fruit notes include lemon, grapefruit, passionfruit, and apple. Very dry, clean finish. Great.

M: Hugely prickly, overcarbonated, thinned-out body. Not good.

O: What an interesting beer; it's ugly and has a terrible texture, but boy does it taste amazing. I'm really curious what more time in the bottle would do to it, although I'm in no way sure it would change for the better. This is a bizarre beer, and one I'm very glad I got to try.

Cheers!

Poured from bottle into oversized flute. Cloudy light straw color with an aggressive 2 fingers of white head. Nose is dry, funky, with a hint of banana and lemon peel. Tongue is quite similar; Lots of the lemon zest makes itself present upfront, then some of the banana esters come to play, then finally the pleasant tartness to finish. Mouthfeel is dry and pretty carbonated. Overall, very pleasant, refreshing brew. QUITE thankful to have tried it.

Thanks to Jason for sharing!

Pours a straw color with a nice white head. The usual aroma of lemon, lemon zest, and just an overall lactic acidity is present. There’s a strong green apple note, light straw and grass, and some biscuit malt. The flavor has an almost sour champagne feel to it. Decently yeasty with some biscuit dough along with the pronounced lactic tartness. A touch of funk, maybe some yogurt?

Thanks, David.

Appearance: Turbid straw yellow body capped by a billowing white head. Looks spot-on.

Smell: Grainy and lactic. Lemon, yogurt, tangy wheat. Not terribly different than their regular berliner, perhaps a bit more grainy.

Taste & mouthfeel: Opens with a nice citrusy twang backed by a foundation of bready, grainy wheat. Lemony and lactic, but not terribly acidic. Medium-light body with a high level of effervescence. Finish could use a bit more kick, but otherwise this is great stuff. Not sure that I like it more than their standard berliner, however.

Bottle 192 of 450: opened with a massive rush of foam spewing out of the bottle. The beer was very active almost resembling what looked like champagne. The beer poured out as a nice clear golden color with a fizzy white head on top. The smell of the beer had the subtle sourness on the nose with some lemon-like citrus as well. The taste of the beer is slightly tart along with the hints of wheat in the finish. The mouthfeel has plenty of carbonation, it's light bodied and dry in the finish. Overall it's a good brew, pleased that I was able to try this one since it's retired.

Thanks to Chris and Ethan for sharing this one. I also had it at Dark Lord Day, but I think it's improved since then. Served in a Russian River tulip.

A - Big white foam that has good retention and eventually settles to a big cap and splotchy lace. Hazy pale golden body with visible tiny bubbles.

S - Lots of sharp wheat flavor, which isn't a huge surprise considering this is an 'Imperial' take on the style. Some mild lemon and tangy sourness in the periphery, along with a hint of sweet tarts and musky funk.

T - The taste starts out wheat beer, with notes of banana, wheat, and spicy yeast, before finishing with mild lactic sourness.

M - Zesty carbonation, medium-light body, slightly prickly, with a crisp, dry finish and light acidity. Quite refreshing, and drinks like a lower ABV take on the style.

D - It's not on the same level as the Southampton's sublime Berliner Weiss, but it's still plenty enjoyable and much-improved since its release. Might continue to sour up a bit in time, so I wouldn't mind a chance to revisit this in the future.

Bottle 200/450

WOW, huge gusher!!!!

Pours a lively, hazy gold. Huge, fluffy white head disapates leaving a ring around the beer and not much else.

Smell isn't very aggressive. Slight funk with some tropical fruit notes.

Taste is not nearly as tart or sour as I would expect from an 'Imperial' Berliner...It is tart, just not as much as I expected. Slight wheat flavor hits immediately and gets a little sharper as it goes down

Feels dry and makes me salivate, I think it does it's job here. Crisp and light, even for a 6% Berliner.

Overall, this is very enjoyable. It is certainly something to try, especially if you are a fan of the style! Just have your glass at the ready!!!

Thanks Mac!

Minimal pop from the cork though there was plenty of activity during the pour. Effervescent golden body, fizzy white head. Nose is strong and potent, full of citrus and lactic acid. Really like the aroma.

Flavors from the nose bleed into the taste, bringing with them a tart puckering sensation. Easy to drink, plenty of flavor, and surprising amounts of depth that simply were not there ~9 months ago. Splendid.

Uberliner has come a long way since its release. Was entirely forgettable on tap at the release (and soon thereafter from bottles); glad to see it's aged nicely. Makes me wish I hadn't traded all of my bottles away so quickly.

Bottle 355/450. Thanks to rlmartin for the trade. From notes.

A: Golden with slight haziness.

S: Wheaty, light citrus notes and mild yeast

T: Tangy, tropical fruit. Papaya, mango, apricot.

M: Medium-high carbonation. Light body.

O: I wasn't really sure what to expect from this beer and it's oxymoronic style description, but it was quite a pleasant surprise.

Another thank you to Jeff.

A: Pours a slightly cloudy lemon color with a billowing bright what head that quickly faded into a fuzzy film. Wispy lace.
S: Dry, tart, and citrusy. I get notes of straw and lager yeast. Very dry and bright smelling.
T: Straw, yeast and a ton of green apple and golden fruits. Fruit pits and tannins dry out the finish. Citrus rounds out the aftertaste and is tart and sharp.
M: Very frothy and bubbly carbonation. Mouth is very dry and fizzy. Clean and refreshing all around.
O: An extremely solid beer. Textbook Berliner Weiss. This would make a great base beer for a ton of sours. Thanks for sharing ipa247!
