12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 5/23/2013. Pours slightly cloudy orange copper color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of orange zest, grapefruit, pear, floral, caramel, toast, bread, grass, and floral earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of hop and malt notes; with fairly weak strength. Taste of orange zest, grapefruit, pear, apple, caramel, toast, brown bread, floral, pine, grass, and floral earthiness. Fair amount of earthy pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, light fruit, caramel, brown bread, toast, pine, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance of hop and malt flavors with light yeast fruitiness; with a great bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy, crisp, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with no warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good English IPA style. Nice balance and complexity of hop and malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Poured into a standard pint glass a clear light golden with a creamy-like thin top that did last through the duration of me drinking it.Aromas of biscuit malt, toast, and faint mineral with not much hop presence, still not bad for the style it is.Toasted grain and caramel toffee flavors with more of that light mineral element in the finish, again just a light leafy hops presence. You know for what it is it's not bad, don't expect a big hopped up IPA,it's not supposed to be.

A-Pours a clear, dark copper color. Big, fluffy, doughy head. The color of the head is almost straw. Good lace.

S-Firstly, malt sets the tone. Caramel and sweet dough. Not sure about the freshness of this one. The hops are dull, herbal and a bit grass with light candied citrus.

T-Tastes old but maybe that's just because its an EIPA. Herbal and tea-like hops are mostly overshadowed by the rich malt. Sweet doughy malt. Then a surprising bitterness sets in. I get some offputting metal too.

M-Medium bodied with growing bitterness. Took me a while to finish the first bottle.

O/D-Did not like this one very much. Needs more hop! A bland cup of suds.

Southampton's Burton IPA is the brewery's attempt at the historical style, but what methods and ingredients is unknown. The focus is primarily on hop bitterness and caramel malt sweetness and bread-like characters, resulting in a fine-tasting beer that doesn't differentiate itself much from any other bitter beer with a slight emphasis on the lighter end of caramel malt sweetness. The lack of hop aroma in an IPA is a bit interesting from a technique perspective, making me wonder if the brewery used only bittering hops and mostly added them early in the boil.

Pours a dense, substantial 1.5cm tall head of small-sized bubbles, fairly clean white in color, with slightly above average retention at lasting one-and-a-half minutes long. Lacing is good, with thin patterns clinging to the insides of the glass. Beer is a bright golden orange color, light bringing out brighter orange-yellow hues to the transparent body. Carbonation is visible, fairly active, but modest in number.

Aroma is somewhat muted, primarily of caramel malt, with inclusions of light fruit esters (orange, plum) and equally light tea.

Overall flavor is of caramel and lightly bread-like malts with mild mineral character, modest herbal and spicy hops with medium-strong intensity bitterness, and a light, somewhat sweet fruitiness from ale yeast ester production. Front of palate detects caramel malt sweetness, bread crust, somewhat herbal and fruit-like flavors from hops and yeast esters. Mid-palate notes pleasant caramelized malt sugar sweetness, modest breadiness, light mineral character, medium-intensity hop bitterness and spiciness, and modest fruity esters and herbal characters. Back of palate features caramel malt sweetness, hop bitterness and spiciness, with light herbal characters. Aftertaste is of mild caramel malt sweetness, fairly strong bitterness, and slight herbal characters from the hops.

Beer has a medium to medium-light body with carbonation of medium to medium-low intensity, leading to a feeling of sluggish, faint foaminess and slight wateriness. Closes quite dry, with low stickiness clinging to the palate after each sip.
