a highly limited, and now very old barleywine. i think 2011 was our bottle date, a dinosaur to say the least. i love english and am neutral on american barleywines, so i was glad to see this as decidedly english upon first whiff. its murky as they come, thick and caramely, notes of citrus too though to cut it, and seemingly has to be aged in a barrel with the vanilla mellowness i am getting, but i dont think it is. the flavor matches the nose beautifully, and the real achievement here is all this grain character, including sweetness, but so little residual sugar. there is also almost no alcohol thats obvious, and i have to assume because of this, that time has done this quite a few favors. no way it could have been so relaxed and approachable when it was fresh. did not know these guys got down with beers like this, makes me happy they do, or at least did, its near the top of my list in the category, thats for sure. maybe a little overpowering for our seafood dinner, but the grill flavors on the fish and the smoky charred notes in the back of the malt bill here come together nicely. as evolved as it can be, i think consumed at the peak of ageing. there cant be many of these left out there, so if this sounds like your jam, go find one quickly! i loved its richness but resolve, and even picked up a little coconut to take me away. lovely.

Not sure of the vintage, but notes seem in indicate 2011. Sampled Jan. '14. Reddish brown pour with a small tan head that fizzled down to a thin ringlet, dotting the glass with scant lace. In the nose, solventy alcohol, notes of citrus zest, bready malts, potpourri. A lot of what was in the smell came out again in the taste, solvent-like booze, bready malts and toasted grains bringing in a bit of token sweetness, with some herbal notes and dried citrus peel lending a bitter element. While I have had barleywines like this in the past, it's not really the kind of stuff I look for in the style. Medium body, awkward mouthfeel, average carbonation, drinkable in moderation. It wasn't bad overall, just seemed messy and unbalanced.

2011 vintage
Pours a deep orange with a 1 finger white head
The smell is still pretty hoppy for some reason picking up on a little bit of peach and some sweet crumb cake like notes
Taste is slightly faded hops with a very sweet butterscotch and brown sugar flavor...no sign of the abv
Mouthfeel is on the heavy side and although the pour brings on a decent sized head it seems to have a slightly lower carbonation.
Overall very good beer...it has changed quite a bit since I had the last one right after they released.

A - Pours a murky light brown with a small 1 inch foam that fades to a frothy top to the beer. Just a little bit of lacing on the glass
S - Very malty, grainy, toffee aroma. Hints of a minty herbal smell as well.
T - The taste is alot of caramel malts, some plum along with some oxidation. Almost a wet cardboard taste along with a bit of a minty and hebal quality.
M/D - medium to thick body with a nice carbonation. The drinkability is a bit rough on this one, it has an interesting flavor but might not be one that I could drink more than a glass full of. Definitely a sipper but interesting to try something new to me.
