I've had this once or twice thanks to Keffa (including a 1 gal growler monstrosity). But this review comes from a pour at Bodega, off of a clean palate.

Black with a very short head. Seems pretty low on carbonation but also creamy, almost like it was on nitro.

Smells of bourbon - loads of that barrel juice/leftover liquor flavor.

The flavor is choc full of chocolate, vanilla, coconut, and roast. Lots of bourbon flavor - this is fresh and brash, but nothing that ever gets out of control the way some barrel-aged beers can become.

Warm but not boozy. Sticky and a bit under carbonated.

Overall a very solid example of the style. I feel like this beer was better in the past, but this is the first sample I have had enough of to do a full review.

Bourbon Barrel Anastasia pours a very dark chocolate fudge color. It’s onyx. Pitch black. No light cuts through at all. Not even when held to light. Very impressive…and ominous. It’s topped with a dark mocha colored head. It rises to about a finger and a half in height before falling back. Lacing was a little sticky and lighter. Looks really nice!

The nose is impressive. Bourbon is definitely strong in the mix and hits first. I don’t know how long this was in barrels, but it smells like it was there a while. Chocolate is definitely noted. Doesn’t smell very sweet. There’s a roasted quality to it, as well. Bourbon is strong, but plays nicely with the other scents. Secondary scents include oak, vanilla, roasted coffee, and alcohol. Alcohol is easily noted. Eh. It’s barrel-aged. What’d you expect? Smells very, very good.

The flavor is likewise impressive. Bourbon comes through loud and clear here as well. If you’re not much into bourbon, this one might not be for you. Nevertheless, the bourbon flavor blends very well with the roasted and chocolate malt base. The chocolate flavor is bittersweet and cocoa-esque. It’s not very sweet. The barrel-aging process imparted nice oak and vanilla flavors. Perhaps a bit of coconut, too. Roasted coffee and alcohol round it out. The alcohol is a bit strong and is warm. It’s not too intimidating though. Good stuff. Finishes chocolaty with a strong shot of bourbon.

At first, the body seems lighter and thin. As it warms, it does grow a bit thicker and more substantial. Carbonation is lighter, and the bubbles feel soft. It’s nice and smooth. Goes down relatively easy for a bigger beer. There’s no way I could handle a growler of this solo. Sharing is the way to go.

I’m really impressed with Bourbon Barrel Anastasia. This is definitely good stuff. I like the strong bourbon a lot. It’s not too much, but adds a ton of flavor and character. This is an all around strong beer from Weasel Boy. Easy recommendation.

10oz. at the brewpub. It black, layer of light tan head. Sticks just a bit.

Aroma, roast malt, caramel, cocoa and vanilla oak. Can't complain.

Taste, pleasant rendition of the aroma, though more so. The oaky vanilla blends well with the roast, chocolates and earthiness of the stout. Very faint anise and coffee. Finishes mostly with the vanilla latte.

Solid medium body, not dark lord thick, but who really honestly likes dl anyway? Lower carbonation, almost creamy. Only slightly warming.

Don't know if I could spend $50 for the giant growler of it, but you would get your moneys worth $/volume compared to many other bb stouts. Just spent $40 on a 22 of 50/50 Eclipse, so maybe I'm still a little upset about that.

Should at least try if you see it.

128 ounce (1 gallon) brewery sealed growler, took a few days to drink it last weekend. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch brown head that didn't stay around for too long. The brew smells like roasted malt, bourbon, vanilla, chocolate and some dark fruit. Taste is similar to the aroma, the brew tastes like roasted and burnt/charred malt, bittersweet chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, coffee, and a little bit of dark fruit. The bourbon is certainly noticeable in both the aroma and taste of this beer. However, I think the roasty bitter flavors are stronger than the sweet ones. Mouthfeel is light/medium, it's thinner than I expected it to be. Certainly one of the thinner stouts I’ve had recently. It's slick and coating, and also has low/moderate carbonation. I think this is a solid overall brew, I liked it.

Thanks to Keffa for sharing this at Jackie O's this weekend. Poured from a big ass growler into a goblet.

Appearance: Pours brown with some red at the edges where the light hits is. There is almost no head on this beer.

Smell: Sweet roasted malt with lots of dark fruit and some mild bourbon.

Taste: Sweet roast up front with some chocolate and smooth bourbon in there as well. I'm picking up some dark fruit. The finish is nice and warm.

Mouthfeel: The body is on the thick side with tingly carbonation and a mildly dry finish.

Overall: I enjoyed this beer a lot. The only thing I would have liked is if the bourbon was a bad more assertive. I would definitely have it again.

Found some old notes of this one. 01/18/11 at either Bodega or Yellow Brick... I can't remember.
A: Black with thin brown hues, nice dark tan head.
S: Slight tartness in front of a deep roast like licorice, slightly boozy sweet bourbon, sweet caramel and dark chocolate with plums and dark fruits. Wow.
T: Slightly tart plum and raspberry on the lips with a deep sweet roast of oatmeal and dark chocolate, dry finish with a mild bourbon vanilla.
M: Bordering thick and syrupy cut by the tartness.
O: Great.

On tap in a pint glass at Bodega on 1/16/11

Very dark; near black. 1/4th inch tan head. Consistent retention and great, solid lacing..

Simple, one dimensional nose. Lots of sweet whiskey notes. Some roasted malts. Hops are earthy with a touch of faint citrus. Musty wood notes are had as it warms. It tastes similar - lots of whiskey upfront, followed by a decent hop presence which kicks in conjunction with the whiskey. Roasted dark malts underneath. Coffee and marginally sweet chocolate. Tangy overtones; perhaps the plum accounts for this. Hints of charred oak. Full bodied, smooth and viscous. Though not over the top, there are accents of rolling carbonation; a bit too much for me. Surprisingly clean finish with hints of bourbon and roasted malt.

Hmm, the whiskey seems too prominent and hardly integrated enough. Still, the base stout strikes me as really good.

Weasel Boy Bourbon Barrel Anastasia Russian Imperial Stout on tap at the Weasel Boy Taproom in Zanesville, Ohio, on Saturday November 27 2010, the day after Thanksgiving. Served in a 10-oz wine glass.

Brewed with plum (puree) and aged in a bourbon barrel since circa May 2010.

Appearance: A lacquered oak brown, nice one-and-a-half finger head with a brown rim. Gorgeous lacing and retention.

Smell: In the nose, it comes through as a sexy MILF: well-aged, nicely-rounded, enticing. Aromas of Tempranillo grapes (Rioja wine). Very oaky, with a well-played bourbon touch and a tad of the plum that was used in this beer.

Taste: Carbonated bourbon right away. Not as huge as nose. Grape/raisin feeling- that plum comes through again. Dark-fruit juices, cheap table wine (in a good way) and a sugary sweetness on the back. Unique!

Mouthfeel: Full body and flavor, perfect carbonation. It caresses the lips oh-so-finely, like a woman who loves you dearly. A nice hoppy bitterness around the mouth and a subtle but assertive taste of bourbon as it goes down the throat.

Drinkability: Pretty high! More so considering it was a 10-oz pour. Tasty, alcohol is not hot at all, very smooth. Gorgeous!

The regular Anastasia RIS is 8.8%. I don't know the ABV of this one, but I would put it at around 9%, maybe less. An exceptional beer all around.

On tap at the taproom.

Their GABF winning RIS brewed with plum puree and bourbon barrel aged for six months.

A-Deep, dark black/brown with a medium dark tan head that reduced to a thin cap and left nice lacing.

S-Oak tannins, vanilla, plum skins, espresso and chocolate vie for the winning note on top of a rich bass of roasted malt.

T-Luscious bourbon notes fall gracefully down your throat swaying to a tune of prune juice sweetness, coffee/dark chocolate/roasted barley and earthy hop bitterness.

M-Medium to medium-heavy body with long lingering Bourbon notes and an assertive roasted bitterness.

D-Nicely done. The plum addition and barrel aging has certainly elevated the game of this brew. A treat to sit and enjoy in the Weasel Boy "living room"!

Was just able to partake from a 1-gallon growler of this amazing brew that was from 2011. Poured with a dissipating head, but subsequent openings of the growler over the afternoon repeatedly gave off a hiss of a beer that held its carbonation.

The flavors were on par with a high end BBA Russian Imperial Stout, we drank and drank as a group, and everyone enjoyed. Would love to be able to try this again sometime.
