Flashpoint was the winning entry in a recent Oregon Brew Crew homebrewing competition and Laurelwood brewers, who helped judge the event, eagerly agreed to brew a seven-barrel batch for limited release this winter. This black and ruby brew is built on the traditional lines of a robust and roasty porter, but with the inclusion of barley malts smoked over mesquite wood on an outdoor barbeque grill. The result is a hearty porter with a scintillating woodsmoke aroma, abundant character and sound drinkability.

This is ultimately a headless and laceless brew though these attributes were hardly missed after the initial two fingers of gray-brown head disappeared. Laurelwood serves it too cold, but again, this was easy to overcome. The primary flavor is that of an earthen, roasty porter with restrained smoky attributes. Secondary to this are a mix of fruity malts contributing an undercurrent of dark licorice candy.

This is ultimately a very unique and satisfying beer with a solid measure of flavor and a finish that fades casually and gracefully. Get it while you can.
