Hop Monkey IPA
Hop Monkey is a balanced, assertively hopped IPA for the discerning beer drinker. Brewed with Northwest grown barley and hops, this beer features a citrusy hop aroma that's complemented by a full, rounded hop flavor.
6.4 % ABV 60 IBUs O.G. 14.5º Plato
Available at Laurelwood 51st and our Laurelwood NW.

Nice new copper penny color, rather clear. Poured from a growler... so minimal head with very light lacing.

Smell is a mild fruity sweet.. rather citrus like and sweet malt.

Nice bitter and citrus hop with a nice pine-dry after-bite. Hides the Alc. very well.

Not too dry in the mouth.. and very smooth and easy to drink. Doesn't touch their Workhorse IPA, but it's better than a lot of the other IPA's on the market.

Dull orange, burnt auburn pour, bitter aroma not too much in terms of lush aroma.

Taste hit those 90s grapefruit ipa notes. Lots of c hops, lots of bitterness not imparting tons of flavor.

Its reliable. You're getting a bitter grapefruit ipa with not a lot of frills, some crystal malt.

On-tap at the Eastside in Olympia. Served in a pint glass.

Pours a copper gold color and is hazy. Creamy white head.

Smell is faint and fruity

Taste is a citrus and floral flavor. Jasmine or lilac and some citrus flavors.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly cloying.

Moderately drinkable. Citrus and flower tastes are overpowering.

A very soft pour into my New Belgium Globe glass produces a glass filling four finger thick, light tan colored head that quickly grows a finger above the rim and starts to slightly over-flow the glass. The beer is a dark copper / amber hue that shows a somewhat hazy, orange / red copper hue when held up to the light. The nose smells interestingly tart, definitely citrus influenced (that is the hops), but there is also a distinctly lactic character to the nose. This cuts through, and greatly reduces, the hop presence in the aroma.

The beer is very effervescent as it hits my palate and it is also quite a bit lighter bodied than one would like, even in an IPA. The beer definitely has a lactic acidity to it, as well as a funkiness that shouldn’t beer here. Because of the body thinness and the distracting acidity, the hop character tastes not nearly as pungeant as one would expect; it has notes of tangerine juice and orange zest that has a acidity to it that could be described as pleasant, except that this is supposed to be an IPA.

There is definitely something awry with this beer, it shouldn’t be well on its way towards tart and funky. I am definitely disappointed, as I was really hoping to have a nice hoppy IPA.

Orange and copper pour, looks nice, bitter aroma, less hoppy.

More bitterness, grapefruit type hop flavors, big on the c hops. Sweet malt, but light in heft, allows more of the hoppiness to come out and gets better as the bottle empties.

Pretty straightforward and ordinary ipa these days, check out their workhorse ipa first, this is the lesser of the two. Nothing wrong with it, nothing exceptional either.

22oz brown bomber with no freshness date.

Tiny and tightly knit group of bubbles produce an amazing looking lacing, copper hued liquid a clear and no doubt attractive. Smells of leaf, medicinal, aspirin and tangerine ... all from the hops though there is a kiss of yeast and malt. Hops are pretty assertive with a big push of bitterness which clearly is there to balance out the bigger malt bill here. Hint of caramel leaks through but not without the hops dropping a thick edge of leafy and citric rind flavor to counter. Balance is talked up by the malt and hops though the hops are clearly the broader more flavorful component here. Finishes pretty hoppy as the dryness sets in.

A solid PNW IPA ... very happy to run into this brew.

22oz bottle with a yellow crown.

A- Nice hazy orange with a tan, foamy head. Decent retention.

S- Grass and a slight citrus scent.

T- Bitter pine, sweet citrus, and a touch of malts.

D- Mild and a bit underwhelming. Could this be a seesion IPA, or maybe I got an old bottle.

Appearance- Amber/coppery in color. White head retention. Medium carbonation. Very typical IPA appearance.

Smell- An outstanding floral aroma of hops leaps from the beer. Very one or two note but very pleasant and inviting.

Taste- Very unique taste. Much more malty than I expected and much lower in bittering hops than most IPAs that I typically drink. The hops come through in the middle of the beer but the fore taste and after taste demonstrate the malts more than hops. I very nice clean finish. Certainly not a hoppy IPA but very tastey and fun to drink. Very sessionable.

Mouthfeel- Very gentle. Very smooth with no harshness at all.

Drinkability- Very high and sessionable.

Overall- This beer is not in my opinion an example of a American IPA. It reminds a tad of DFH 60 minute but more watered down with fewer bittering hops and fewer malts. I really enjoyed it and wished I lived closer to Portland to drink more than the bomber a friend brought back from a recent vacation.

A - It pours one finger of white head into a pint glass. The head has good retention and leaves some pretty good lacing. The beer is clear and has a medium golden-orange hue.

S - The nose consists of pine and faint citrus. As the beer warms up there is also a light sweet aroma.

M - Light to medium in body with adequate carbonation.

T - A fairly simple flavor. It consists of sweet malts paired with a mixture of citrus and pine. The pine comes through stronger than the citrus and lasts through the finish into the aftertaste leaving a medium bitterness.

Pretty good, if this were classified as a pale ale I'd give it higher marks, but as an IPA it's a little lacking in the wow department.

M: Well carbonated slight hop bite.

22 OZer poured into pint glass

Foamy one finger head, dwindles down to a thin layer while settling. Cloudy, light orange brown.

Not much on the nose after the pour, im hoping itll open up some..
[It slightly did, I picked up on the sweet malt on the nose, and in the taste.]

Picking up some citrus fruit in the front, rounded with a mild hop finishing dry with a pleasant lingering bitter. There is a sharpness to the finish which makes the bitter stand out.

Very thin, a bit oily.

Its pretty drinkable. It is an easy IPA, though the pine bitter finish may not please everyone.
I personally like it but not crazy about it. I can see myself choosing over this one very easily. It is runner up to the workhorse, I feel this brew lacks a bit of umph (yea, thats right I said umph) to be considered a model of a classic PNW IPA.

Had a glass at the PDX airport. Appeared clear amber with a white finger of head followed by lacing. This is a tasty beer, but by Portland standards, it's closer to a pale ale since the hops are actually balanced by a share of toasty malt. The hops are still strong with a classic grapefruit and citrus rind, with a hint of pepper, character that evolves over your tongue. I like this, it's more approachable and possibly being sessionable, while still having a big and interesting character.

On tap at the Laurelwood PDX location.

The beer pours an attractive orange copper color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is textbook NW IPA, with considerable citrus, dank earth and a hint of pine. On the palate, this is a very well balanced IPA, with the light sweet malt countering the beer's pleasant bitterness very well indeed. Mouthfeel is light, but with plenty of flavor. The finish is long, dry and bracingly bitter. Just delicious. Drinkability is exceptional, with the alcohol not the least bit obtrusive or intrusive.

A well made, prototypical NW IPA. Exactly what I would expect from the talented folks at Laurelwood. An absolute treat to be able to enjoy at the airport.
