Bottle from my Secret Santa, best before 09/25/09. Pours a cloudy brown with a thick light tan head. Aroma of spices: water chestnut, vegetable stew. Flavor is more spicy with lots of vegetables and sweet malt. Perhaps some mint leaves. Sweetness balances out the vegetabley spices (although maybe a little too sweet). I liked it though.

Bottle: Poured an hazy amber color with a medium size foamy head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of light sweet malt with some weird spices mix that does work well together. Taste is dominated by a huge malt backbone with great notes of spices and ester. Definitely not common but interesting take with that spice mix. Body is full with limited filtration and creamy texture with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol.

The label states that this spiced ale is ”inspired by both Scottish and Danish brewing traditions” and brewed with 4 barley malts, wheat malt, unmalted wheat, 6 spices and 1 type of hops.

The colour is deep brown with a tint of orange; the liquid is hazy. Bottle conditioned. The high foam quickly sinks down to a beige layer with a fizzing sound. No lacing.

The smell is indeed spicy with notes of cloves, cinnamon, oranges and dry hints of cardamom. Some sweet roasted malt and hints of bitter-fruity hops. Lovely.

The taste is much dryer than the smell. Spicy notes of dried fruits, cloves, cardamom, orange peels, lemons and raisins. After some time, an interesting hint of sweet liquorice and maple syrup emerges. The aftertaste got a growing fruity bitterness that suits the lasting mild spicy notes very well. The finish got some mild earthy-yeasty flavours, too.

The carbonation is quite strong; lots of large bubbles. The liquid is a little dry.

A daring spiced beer that is well crafted and balanced making it a fine late-evening-beer.
