12 oz bottle into Deschutes tulip snifter

A - Solid representation of the style. Thick dark liquid that pours with a gorgeous chocolate milk colored foam. Head dissipates eventually, but each sip stirs up another bit of foam. Splotches of lacing.

S - Blasts of dark roasted malt mixed with chocolate. A bit of mineral character and a trace of funk - two things that I was not looking for.

T - Roasty freakin' malt. Some umami flavor. Not bad, but not overly complex.

M - I tend to like a lot of carbonation, but this one was over the top carbonated for me. To the point of distraction. There was also some unexpected astringency. The whole affair is quite tingly. If I was eating some greasy food, this beer would help cut through it. Hmmm... that sounds good...

O - Maybe my expectations were too high, but this one did not perform like I had hoped. I would gladly, gladly try it again, but I just didn't get the Wow Factor from this one. That said, it is definitely worth trying, and possibly great with greasy food. I'm giving slightly higher marks because I sat on this bottle for a while. The beer didn't taste old, but maybe it would have been better fresher.

Served at room temperature into a modified pint glass.

A: Completely black, no light coming through this blasphemic piece of crafted liquid. Brown, nougat coloured head.

S: Chocolate, soy sauce, coffee, brown sugar and liquorice. Everything's there.

T: Chocalate, liquorice, brown sugar, soy soauce and toffee. The taste delivers what the smell promised.

M: On the medium side of medium carbonation. A bit thin.

O: Well, in my opinion it's not perfectly balanced and it has a little too much carbonation and lack of body for my taste. It's a well tasting beer sold for a noble cause but there's plenty of imperial stouts that brings a lot more to the table than this un-godly creation.

Vintage unknown. 500 ml bottle into a DFH signature glass. The "atheist" tie in comes off as a bit gimmicky. Beer is the last place I want to have religion or politics present.

A - Pours a dark black viscous body. Dense mocha head with large bubbles and gobs of sticky lacing. Excellent looking stout.

S - Roasted malts, licorice candy, coffee, and vanilla. A bit of smoke and an interesting hop fruit sweetness.

T - Bitter coffee and milk chocolate initially. Finish is light smoked malts and cigarette ash, the fruit here is dark rather than sweet. Simple, robust, inviting.

M - Silky and smooth. Great carbonation and mouth feel.

O - A very simple yet tasty stout. The mouth feel is near perfect and the faint cigarette ash in the aftertaste is surprisingly pleasant.

500 mL bottle poured into a CBS snifter. No bottle date.

Appearance - Black with an ample mocha head. Thick collar around the beer. Nice islands of bubbles.

Smell - Chocolatey with a bitter malt presence. Comes off as coffee and black patent malt.

Taste - Lots of chocolate in the taste. Chewy fudgy chocolate. Turns bitter with almost a smokey finish. Slightly sweet with a touch of alcohol.

Mouthfeel - Very chewy at first, but the carbonation cuts it quickly. The finish thins out and alcohol comes through. Nothing intense, but enough to notice.

Overall - Quality stout. Very good without being standout in any category, though.

Poured on tap at black and blue in Easton

A- deep black with huge 4 finger tan head. Creamy looking.

S-lots of dark chocolate malts with licorice. Dark fruits linger too.

T- dark roast with a bitterness that hides the sweetness beautifully. Had a hint of licorice that makes this beer a sipper.

M- thick and smooth

Great stout

Served on draught at Monks Porter House in Stockholm.

Appearance is dark, virtually black, with nearly a finger of tan head atop. Its nose has brown sugar, molasses, roasted malts. Tipping back the goblet that it was served in and I taste black licorice, bread, roasted malts, mmm this is good. Mouthfeel is full and rich. Overall, this is a fantastic beer. Very happy to have had the opportunity to try it.

Thanks to my friend ben for sharing this with JLindros and myself. Reviewed from notes.

A - Pours a deep dark black with a nice thin mocha blanket that just doesnt really quit. Very nice appearance here for a stout.

S - Smell is where I find it a bit lacking. I felt it was overly sweet with lots of caramel and light roast notes and chocolate.

T - Roasty, caramely malts with light nougat, booze, and maybe some light grain as well.

M - Mouthfeel is awesome, light carbonation, very velvety.

O - Overall this was a solid surprise. None of us had ever heard of it before. Glad ben randomly picked this!

A: Pours pitch black with a monster khaki colored head and tremendous lacing.

S: Some fantastic dark flavors. Powdery dark chocolate, licorice, molasses and hints of charred wood. Traces of tobacco. A hint of some fruit in there as well which I can only attempt to identify as lychee. Smells pretty great.

T: Lots of dark chocolate and roasted malt. A ton of rich chocolate sweetness throughout. Rich chocolate cake and brownie. Mouthfeel is absolutely perfect. Smooth and velvety, really bringing out the sweeter elements. Finishes with some bittersweet chocolate and charred oak. I almost never say this, but this would be fantastic with ice cream.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A-Pours midnight black with a small, frothy, toffee-colored milkshake-like head. Lovely.

S-Big wafts of dark fruits, grap/raspberry/cherry, roasted coffee and sugars. Reminds me of a nice mocha with some fruit on top.

T-Roasted coffee, lots of sugar and booze wake up your palate, very long and complex development from coffee to sweet cherries to smoky tobacco bitterness. A ton of flavor here without being overwhelming.

M-Thick, very similar to a milkshake, very smooth. Everything I love in a great chocolate IS.

O-4.75/5, one of the best I've had of the style to date.
