A pint at Three Boars, on a snowy evening.
This beer appears a deep black abyss, at least until some lowkey cola edges play out at the base, with one finger of loosely foamy beige head, which bleeds away rather swiftly, leaving a few random islet specks around the glass in the process.
It smells of sugary roasted caramel malt, treacle, bittersweet chocolate, some lactic sourness, and weirdly strong earthy, musty hops. The taste is fairly reminiscent of those big boozy chocolate Christmas treats, more roasted caramel malt, mildly astringent black fruit, soft citrus cream, a subtly increasing charred smokiness, a bit of warmed milk, and dead leaf, earthy hops.
The bubbles are duly present, and more or less servicable, the body a sturdy medium weight, and smooth, with just a slight metallic edge playing the pea to this particular princess. It finishes sweet, but with a significant herbal offset to the lingering toasty caramel malt.
A decent enough Imperial stout, one which hides its prominent ABV well. However, the herbal, bordering on sour, stripe running throughout kind of gets old a little too quickly. Worth a go, if only for the rarity of this offering in Edmonchuk.

A work of craftmanship, but an IS without the chocolate and hoppiness of an American version. Above average mouthfeel, and fine roastiness in aroma and taste. Bitter taste, although not overally bitter. This one is a sipper, and it grew on me.Black without much head. Surprisingly well hidden alcohol.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a rather large off-white foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of sweet black chocolate is dominant with some light bitter notes. Taste is also dominated by some sweet black chocolate with some notes of roasted malt which provide light bitterness notes at the end. Creamy texture is interesting with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol but body is a bit thin for style.

Recently stumbled across my notes from The Festival 2012. Lets do this!
A - Poured a deep dark brown, almost black with a thin light brown head that fades to leave slight lacing.
S - Lightly smokey, some dark fruits, molasses, super faint chocolate.
T - Taste is similar to the nose here, nice burnt malts, milky chocolate, molasses, fainter dark fruit. Fair amount of smoke.
M - Mouthfeel is nice and creamy with the alcohol being hidden nicely.
O - Overall, a solid beer but a bit too smokey for my tastes, glad to try it though.

Pours nearly jet black, and you can tell there is a certain viscosity to the liquid; topped off with a finger of darker tan head that doesn't last too long, but does settle and leave a thinner film.
The aroma is not all that powerful, but certainly pleasant with some lighter coffee, light roasted malts, and quite a good deal of chocolate. The roastiness really comes into play in the taste. Definite hints of coffee and I get a fair amount of sweeter chocolate; not really much of a hop presence to note, but certainly lacks an overwhelming sweetness which is really great. Medium to thicker body with some prickly carbonation; substantial. Obvious sipping brew, and really well-made. Balanced quite well, and pleasantly warming. Good stuff.

From 01/02/11 notes. Brought to a local tasting by CaptainCougar; thanks Tom. Tried along with Son of Nekron and Nekron.
a - Pours a dark black one in white head.
s - Smells of caramel malts, chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts
t - Tastes of chocolate, roasted malts, and alcohol.
m - Full body and moderate carbonation.
d - A nice imperial stout, I placed this one ahead of Son of Akron but behind Nekron. Would have again.

On-tap at Northdown. Served in a snifter.
A - Tan foam settles to a thick collar, wispy patches, and stray splotches of lace. Black body with a hint of red-brown transparency at the edges.
S - Very smokey, with a slightly savory and hammy note to it. As it warms it gets significantly fruitier, but there's an omnipresent undercurrent of char and molasses.
T - The taste is significantly more burnt and charry than the aroma suggests. Burnt malts dominate, with only light touches of fruity yeast, milk chocolate, and tobacco. A bit too acrid and bitter for my tastes.
M - Medium-bodied, with a creamy texture mid-palate before drying out in the finish. Alcohol is really well-hidden - this drinks like an 8% beer to me.
D - A fairly drinkable Imperial Stout, but too much ash in the flavor for my tastes. I think I could actually drink two of these, but the draft selection would have to be somewhat lean before I got to that point. I did appreciate the reasonably pricing on this at Northdown.

Poured a black color with an average frothy brown head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted chocolate malt, dark fruit and floral aroma. Medium to heavy sweet dark fruit flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a very good beer.
