Poured from a 9 oz. bottle into a tulip glass. A dark reddish bronze barleywine with an ample beige head, featuring moderate retention. Smells like strong toasted caramel and stewed red apples, sweet and fruity with some citrus lemon rind and a rock candy sweetness. Fantastic aroma that well captures the style. Palate is strongly malty, with some fruity and bitter elements. Mealy pears, tart red apple skins, and caraway seed dance atop raisins, leather, oilseed, and walnut meat, with the red fruit sweetness gathering traction as one acclimatizes to the earthy bitterness. Quite well carbonated for the style which accentuates the fruity effect and of moderately thick body. Finishes bready and sweet, with some earthy hops lending a tannic feel. Not as "vinous" as the label suggests, although the yeast-derived fruit notes do manage to keep neck and neck with the rich malts. Kind of a quintessential "English" barleywine, sweet and malty with ample dark and orchard fruit character. The alcohol is well hidden. Leans toward the latter as opposed to the hoppier and more bitter sectors of barleywine nation.

A: Dark purple/red with no head.

S: Red wine, grapes, and maybe some oak in the nose.

T: Malt, vanilla, caramel, a touch of alcohol and some dark fruit.

M: Full bodied, smooth, perhaps even flat, but the alcohol has a kick to it that seems to make up for this, just not in a very good way.

O: This is a great barley wine, and I'd love to try a barrel aged version (particularly Elijah Craig 18 barrels).

a: Dark, hazy, ruby tinted mahogany; pours with a big sticky head.

s: Lots of rich smelling caramel and raisins; kind of quad like, minus the yeast. A little chocolate and some rummy booze.

t: Sweet overall, but not cloyingly so. Lots of sugary raisins and caramel up front plus a little molasses up front. Not much of a finish, this ends a bit abruptly.

m: Big and sticky.

o: Good stuff, but doesn't live up to the price tag.

16oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours a very murky chestnut brown color. Some minimal off-white bubbles formed.

(S)- A subtle underlying nutty roastedness throughout. Tons of caramel and toffee amidst raisin and a resin-like bark aroma.

(T)- It is heavy on the caramel, but not overly sweet. It has a subtle woody bitterness with a hint of raisin. Ever so slight resin character on the finish.

(M)- A mellow carbonation level. It is sweet, but restrained for the style with a moderate level of bitterness.

(O)- It is a robust barleywine showcasing a caramel-rich bitter profile overall. It is enjoyable but there are far better examples.

Recently stumbled across my notes from The Festival 2012. Lets do this!

A - Poured a light reddish orange hue with an off white head that fades to a light, thin halo.

S - Aromas of some nice dark fruits, light caramel, flashes of booze.

T - Taste is better, lightly toasted malts, burnt sugars, bitter finish. Good malts, alcohol hidden nicely.

M - Mouthfeel is nice for the style, decent enough to keep it up off the tongue.

O - Overall, not a bad barleywine, just somewhat one dimensional though.

Pours a three finger off-white head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Hazy amber color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Dark fruit and alcohol nose, flavor is dark fruit, caramel and some alcohol. Decent barleywine. Pricey at $9.99 for a 500ml bottle from Julio's Liquors Westborough, MA.

16.9 oz bottle was poured into a snifter.

Appearance: The beer poured a small off white head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a murky reddish brown with visions of slow moving bubbles coming up the side of the glass.

Smell: caramel and toffee followed by citrus characteristics and a little booze in the end.

Taste: same as above, but the bitterness lingers for this beer even though it is supposed to be well balanced. Still very tasty though with some nice and warm boozy alcohol in the rear.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium to high carbonation, medium bodied, tingly numbing in the back of the palate, and lingering bitterness.

Overall: A nice barleywine hailing all the way from Denmark. I wonder if aging a bit more would mellow out the bitterness in this beer and the maltiness would be stronger.

Orange-amber body with a thick, creamy white head. RIch, grainy aroma with caramel and toffee notes and robust, warm bread character. A touch of ripe fruit. Taste is malt-forward with hints of apricot and pear. Alcohol warmth nicely balanced with hop bitterness and the malt notes. Medium-bodied.

Seems to fit the malt-forward style of an English barleywine. Definite alcohol prominence, yet pretty well balanced across the board. Nicely complex and intriguing. Big, powerful, delightful.

Pour is nice looking, a dark amber body that gets really dark in the center, with a healthy head with lacing.
Aroma is on the sweet side of the spectrum, with dark fruits predominant.
This is a real tasty beer, a balanced and complex web of pomegranate, grapes, and currants are mixed with caramel, grains, and molasses and lightened up by a nudge of alcohol.
Mouthfeel is full and slightly sticky, low carb, and a delight to drink.

This is a really good English BW, glad i bought one, i will buy more.

Pours reddish orange. Thick, viscous, with a yellow/cream head that dissipates. Held to the light, there are bubbles rising. Very pretty color for the style.

Might be touch too cold -- not getting as much as I'd like. Some rich toasted malt, some fruit, some toasty woody notes.

I like this because the alcohol is so very well hidden. Toasted malt that flips between woody sugars and rising bitterness. This is well hopped, as the bitterness at the end is apparent. Rich thick flavors in the middle, though not overly complex. Finishes with malt covered by bitterness.

Full bodied with some decent carbonation.

This is not overly sweet, and the richness of this beer, and the strength as well, is well balanced throughout. Nice brew. My plus here: a 1 pt. 9 oz bottle, so I don't feel destroyed and can enjoy all of this myself.
