A: Pours a hazy caramel color with a pretty low opacity. light tan head tops this off in a thin frothy yet relatively quickly dissipating foam. not too much lacing to speak of, just a hint I suppose.

S: fruity and metallic, sweet smelling caramel and milk chocolate.

T: Tastes like perhaps this was bottled before it was done fermenting. Raw grain flavors show a chocolate malty hay sort of way. This is thick stuff but lacking the finished flavors which good beer tends to carry. some bitterness is there too to help balance otherwise sweet flavors. Its not cloying... that positive.

M: thick and loose

O: not quite a drain pour, but this one needs serious help. try it before you bottle it guys.

500ml bottle, suitably evil looking, what with the Judas Priest album cover evocative label imagery. Their tag line, in Danish, is 'damn good beer' - ha, suck it, Minhas!

This beer pours a hazy, damned-near opaque dark golden brown hue, with three fingers of creamy, foamy, and mildly bubbly beige head, which leaves a broad hanging curtain of lace around the glass in its wake.

It smells of dense caramel malt, hard toffee, dates, burnt dark sugar, pear syrup, bitter leafy hops, and warmed sherry. The taste is not-overly-sweet chocolate-draped toffee, real vanilla, soused holiday raisins, stewed red apples, herbal, grassy, and somewhat musty hops, tanned leather, and a nicely subtle undertow of vinous booze comfort.

The carbonation is soft, but hardly absent in its supportive tingling, the body nearing full weight, and fairly smooth, just a few pricks here and there from hop and booze alike. It finishes with a back-burnered, but still a-bubblin' butterscotch sweetness, giving way to a prominent dryness, borne of restrained hop bitterness and swelling booze edginess.

A rather finely rendered (ok, f'ing bitchin'!) barleywine. The Anglo angle does drop this a few points in this biased reviewer's estimation, but that doesn't mean I can't admit that this is a kick-ass example of said style. I do kind of wonder where the initial vinous character went off to, but in the end, that doesn't matter a whit. This is kooky drinkable with the usual big ABV caveats, and exhibits old-world complexity of flavour in spades.

run of the mill barleywine. sugary sweet more than hoppy. Mahogany body with good lace. Boozy and malty aroma. Caramel Bought for 59 Danish kroners and sent from far, before it was all over the shelves. I have to be in the mood for this and that would not be too many days.

No bottle date, age unknown. Pours a murky brown color with a thin head that quickly settled. Just a thin film of suds after a couple of minutes. Just a little spotty lacing is left down the glass.

Malt driven aroma. Caramel and toffee notes. Brandy like smell. Alcohol in the aroma tells the drinker this is a high-test brew. Also smells slightly oxidized.

Flavor is a combination of caramel and wood. Some earthiness. Alcohol is upfront and bracing. No subtley shown by this brewer.

Full bodied with nice carbonation. Nice soft, smooth texture.

Overall this was a letdown. I expected a lot more considering the pricetag. Slick and attractive packaging that needs a bottle date.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep copper color ale with an average size off-white foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of cookie dough with some light dry fruits. Taste is also dominated by cookie dough with some dry figs and minimal residual sugar. Body is about average with good carbonation and no alcohol was apparent. A bit too much cookie dough in the mix for my taste and lacking some character though still enjoyable.

From a 500 ml brown bottle. Pours out a dense cloudy opaque oaky hue, with a short creamy off-white head that retains.

On the nose is sweet sugary toffee malt, brown sugar, raisin, Concord grape, chocolate, grapefruit rind and herbal hops.

Sweet toffee/chocolate malt up front in the flavour, rummy notes, finishing with bright citrus hops along with spicy, herbal hops. Prominent alcohol warmth lingers in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is medium-full, mostly from the sediment and unattenuated sugars, turbid rather than chewy, with low carbonation.

A very enjoyable, approachable Barley Wine that delivers the goods. Mouthfeel could be a bit cleaner (really, there's a lot of extra unnecessary sediment floating around in there, almost gives off the impression of plankton), however it does give it a very old school feel. Definitely worth picking up.

Bottle from wordemupg, 500ml into a tulip. Thanks dude.

Mahogany body, light cream coloured head. Some legs and shreds of lacing are left behind. Nose has lots of candy and caramel, light alcohol and subtle fruity notes. Lots of malt character here, certainly English in style. Taste adds more caramel, rich malt notes but subtracts the strong 'candied' impression I got from the nose. Dark breads as well. Fairly full and quite dense in body, alcohol is present but doesn't interfere. A solid barleywine, but this doesn't do much to stand out and differentiate from others in the same vein. However, this does do well as a cold weather sipper.

i guess this lacks a little sweetness for me. tad bitter and very hot -- this is a sizable barley wine.

pours a dark cider/amber hue, with some white bubbles on top. the carbonation though is adequate.

the smell is somewhat mysterious to me, slightly malty with something a bit sour lurking, slightly sulfuric even -- but not overpowering by any estimation.

the taste is rich and hot and burns a little going down. my first impression is that it is rough around the edges, a little too much bite. but as you drink, the more nuanced carmel and maple syrup notes bubble to the surface -- this beer needs some strong cheese and crusty bread, or maybe even a piece of pumpkin pie.

i did not love this barley wine, but it was decent. if anything i would suggest it with food. charcuterie or the right desert.

A clouded deep amber, a warm yellow-white firm head that leaves good lacing and there are good curtains.

The smell is sweet plums, ripe pears, eggnog, lemon zest.

Starts very sweet, brown sugar, plum marmalade, a bit boozy and a sharp bitter almost metallic finish.

Medium low carbonation, smooth, sticky and finishing sharply dry at the back of the tongue.

We're not there yet, once again I tried a barley wine that is far too young, and too American. Bottle 500 ml.

Pours a three finger off-white head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Hazy amber color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Dark fruit and alcohol nose, flavor is dark fruit, caramel and some alcohol. Decent barleywine. Pricey at $9.99 for a 500ml bottle from Julio's Liquors Westborough, MA.

16oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours a very murky chestnut brown color. Some minimal off-white bubbles formed.

(S)- A subtle underlying nutty roastedness throughout. Tons of caramel and toffee amidst raisin and a resin-like bark aroma.

(T)- It is heavy on the caramel, but not overly sweet. It has a subtle woody bitterness with a hint of raisin. Ever so slight resin character on the finish.

(M)- A mellow carbonation level. It is sweet, but restrained for the style with a moderate level of bitterness.

(O)- It is a robust barleywine showcasing a caramel-rich bitter profile overall. It is enjoyable but there are far better examples.

Served in a chalice at Local Option.

The 2011 Bachelor Party Extravaganza continues its takeover of Local Option! This victim pours a dark sienna-garnet topped by about a finger of dirty khaki foam. The nose comprises toffee, Belgian dark candi sugar, cashews, light oak, dark fruit, light cocoa, and a touch of spiced rum (the darker the better in this case). The taste heaps on the toffee, caramel, brown sugar, maple syrup, and light cocoa; some dark fruit remains, particularly fig; and the rum is now accented with vanilla bean and molasses. This is one damn-tasty beer, my friends! The body is a stolid medium, leaning toward some minor heft, with a very light moderate carbonation and a pretty smooth feel. Overall, this was one of the highlights of the Extravaganza. It's a decidedly tasty b-wine, one that is meant to sipped and enjoyed in the company of fine folks. Good times, indeed.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ

A: The pour is a deep dark amber color with a finger of off-white head.

S: A surprisingly hoppy nose to this one. Lots of floral, perfumey hops with a bit of citrus peel and pine. Great maltiness with tons of dark fruit undertones, specifically black cherries and raisins. Definitely some alcohol as well.

T: Just a bit of an alcohol bite to the beer, but it's nicely masked by the sweet caramel, brown sugar, and molasses. Dark fruits help to do this as well. Still a solid hop character with lots of floral notes and piney bitterness.

M: Just about full in body with a medium level of carbonation.

O: A very well balanced barleywine that toes the line between hopped up American barleywine and sweeter old ale/English barleywine.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a rust color and a thick, cloudy consistency. There was an inch of foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: A sharp aroma of caramel, hops, and some malt.

T: Tasted of hops, roasted malt, caramel, and a slight vinous quality. A generally well-rounded and a flavorful beer. Gets better as you go along.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a slick finish. Medium-bodied.

D: On the whole, a solid, well done, drinkable beer.

(no date on the bottle - poured into a balloon in 2 stages)

A: open-spongy, creme-hued foam... chill-hazed deep-orange liquid... notable amount of sediment in the final pour

S: big, dark caramel (malt) lusciousness... prune, tobacco, and maybe date... bit of estery fruitiness... booze is a bit squashed under the weight of the malt... musk and leather... did I mention caramel?!... in total: wood polish and malt syrup

T: alcohol definitely shows up much more on the first sip - floral tinge... big, American-style, nutty, nearly-cakey malt constitution... hops perhaps there to balance with a mildly herbal bitterness, but not pungent in any sense... when the yeast was poured in - nutty... sugary sweet leavings

M: definitely some chewiness here... very long, nectary finish - the residual dextrins slide back and fade away, leaving a comforting glow in the pit of the throat, down to the mid-thorax... full-bodied+...

O: hefty barley-wine - you get a lot of each here - perhaps a first runnings method used here? who knows?
