500 ml bottle, from Voldby Købmandsgård. "Best before" date: The Day of Judgement! ABV is 10.5%. Deep copper to brown colour, big beige head. Strong sweetish aroma, notes of raisins and dark dried fruits, oak, fortified wine, caramel and brown sugar. The flavour is very sweet and vinous, with basically the same elements as in the aroma. Moderate hops in the finish. Good, but sweet enough to make one small glass enough for one sitting. The 500 ml bottle is for sharing!

Look: It brown with reddish hues. It has a tans head with very good head retention.
Smell: There are big caramel aromas with some vinous qualities. There are subtle hints of dark fruits and a very low dried cherry element.
Taste: There are strong caramel flavors with vinous elements. There is a slight bit of orange and dried cherry.
Feel: It has a full, chewy body.
Overall, plenty of complex flavors all bit around the caramel base.

Having spent a week in Copenhagen two years and being overwhelmed by their sophisticated beer scene I knew little about, it is a good experience to remind myself that some Danish crafters seem to know what style they want to perfect.
Handsome among lots of handsome competition in its style. Auburn, tawny, russet with a delicate lacing.
Smells all malt to me (and malt is my friend); producing some nice dark fruits along the way.
Taste is repeats right in there; the same fruity punch from beginning to end. (If done right in the fore-palate, the rear-palate and finish takes care of itself. I rarely give a 4.5 for mouthfeel unless the brewmaster truly knew to keep hops in its place. This one knows.
Have this again? For sure. This was bottled two years ago; I think I'll get the same and hold it one more.

a criminally underrated barleywine right here, one of the best i have ever had. it has aged well, i think the bottle is at least three years old, thanks to grapevine wine and spirits for keeping it cold the whole time, what a trove of goodness that place is! clear maple syrup colored brew, tons of bubbles collecting into a fluffy inch of khaki head, soapy and airy and expanding. the aroma is beautiful floral honey and rich molasses, with some sherry wine notes as well as a deeply toasty barley malt base and some odd high gravity ale yeast thats real mature and loosely english it seems. the flavor is incredible too, more of the cool sugar layers, they have absolutely gotten the most out of the malt here, and time has done this well, nothing stale or oxidized here at all. its rich and sweet, honey and maple come to mind, unoaked i think, but there is a woody mellowness to this, maybe a function of this ale yeast, which i cant quite place. you know how sometimes you taste something that doesnt seem to make sense, like when you juice carrots they are real sweet? this has a similar thing going on, sherry and oak seem to be in here, but neither one is i dont believe. the booze is scare well hidden too, i get a little loose on this bottle. i couldnt believe the depth of flavor, the brightness, and the uniqueness here, truly one of the better examples of the style i can recall. i may have to go back and buy them out of it...

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a lightly hazy medium orange amber with a thin off-white head that dissipates to a thin ring around the glass with little lacing. Aroma is classic English barleywine; caramel malt, fresh and dried dark fruit, dried light fruit, hints of apple, a touch of honey. Lightly oxidized. Flavor follows with rich caramel malt, full bodied dried fruit with hints of fresh light and dark fruit, lightly nutty. Finishes with interesting caramel and biscuit malt and a touch of dry hop bitterness. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Hits all the note I want from this style of barleywine and the flavors are quite full bodied and complex. Interesting rich malty finish. I liked this Danish barleywine and hope to see it again.

Sherry fruit nose with a suggestion of vanilla and chocolate. Pours brilliant dark chocolate brown under a 2” off white rocky foam cap that produces excellent lace. The dance of dry and sweet on the palate suggests a bourbon filled chocolate with rich malts, vanilla, faint chocolate, sherry and a hint of dark fruit playing back and forth. The bitterness on the finish is more unsweetened chocolate than citrus rind. Very fine carbonation and a body that is lighter than the flavor or alcohol would suggest.

(no date on the bottle - poured into a balloon in 2 stages)
A: open-spongy, creme-hued foam... chill-hazed deep-orange liquid... notable amount of sediment in the final pour
S: big, dark caramel (malt) lusciousness... prune, tobacco, and maybe date... bit of estery fruitiness... booze is a bit squashed under the weight of the malt... musk and leather... did I mention caramel?!... in total: wood polish and malt syrup
T: alcohol definitely shows up much more on the first sip - floral tinge... big, American-style, nutty, nearly-cakey malt constitution... hops perhaps there to balance with a mildly herbal bitterness, but not pungent in any sense... when the yeast was poured in - nutty... sugary sweet leavings
M: definitely some chewiness here... very long, nectary finish - the residual dextrins slide back and fade away, leaving a comforting glow in the pit of the throat, down to the mid-thorax... full-bodied+...
O: hefty barley-wine - you get a lot of each here - perhaps a first runnings method used here? who knows?
