Raspberry beers don't have to be red. In fact, there's often good reason to be weary of the ones that are. Besides, what's not to like about this blindingly bright, naturally filmy, yellow-gold beer and its pearl-like bubbles? Nothing! Looks great to me.
Likewise the nose is pretty darn agreeable too. Tart berry scents gush out the glass followed, of course, by the requisite pinch of sweetness. Smells authentic - nothing cloying, sugary, or bombastic about it. And there's enough grain and yeast to smack of fresh baked bread too.
I was pretty sure I noted some seasoning in the nose - minor hints reminiscent of clove, cinnamon, turbinado sugar, dried herbs and other pantry spices - then I noticed the 'Raspberry flavoured Belgian-Inspired Abbey Ale' fine print on the label. Makes perfect sense. And it's obvious on the palate; there is a tinge of berry tartness but, by and large, this this tastes like a Belgian golden ale.
Hence, despite token amounts of fruity bubblegum and fresh tart berries, it's the yeast that really runs the show. Combined with a cereal grain maltiness this flavour smacks strongly of a fresh-baked loaf and, on many sips, a traditional spiced holiday bread (with fresh fruit subbing in for dried ones).
Wild Raspberry Tabby is a clever take on a fruit beer; Belgian yeast provides more dimension than is typical for a fruit beer without taking away any from the easy drinkability expected of the style. Grand River aught to get this into the LCBO next summer - it would be quite popular.
