Nothin' special. Sweet, with a dry medicinal finish. Tastes odd. Clear gold with moderate head that goes away right away. Too much like a plain Jane brew and a dose of ginger ale - something you can whip up on your own easily enough. Won't be looking for another anytime soon.

500 mL bottle from the LCBO; bottled on July 12 2013 so this is about as fresh as beer from the LCBO gets. Spiced beers are very hit or miss for me, but the fact that I tend to enjoy the flavour of ginger - as well as the fact that I've loved almost everything I've tried from this brewery - convinced me that this was probably worth picking up. Served well-chilled.

Pours a lovely pale golden-amber colour, with a clear complexion and topped with one finger of smooth, dense, creamy off-white head that hangs around for a good long while. A doily pattern of lacing clings to the edge of the glass as it slowly recedes over a period of many minutes, as some lazily-moving bubbles gradually stream their way to the surface. Decent aroma, though it's a little subdued at first - bready toasted malts and ginger snap cookies are the major features, with these notes intensifying slightly as the brew warms.

Tasty stuff, with plenty of ginger flavour, but not to the point of absurdity as is sometimes the case with these spiced brews. Biscuity malts and gingerbread sweetness provide a subtle backdrop for the aforementioned ginger snap notes, which are even more prominent on the palate than the nose. The finish is pleasantly drying, with a gentle brush of malty sweetness and gingerbread spice in the aftertaste that lingers only briefly. Light-bodied, with relatively firm carbonation that, when combined with the spice, gives this brew a very spritzy, enjoyable bite. This stuff is dangerously drinkable, and perfectly suited to an oppressively hot summer evening. Like most of this brewery's beers, the abv is low enough to make this an ideal session option.

Final Grade: 4.08, a very solid A-. Grand River Brewing's Tailset Ginger Ale is quite possibly the most well-crafted spiced beer I've ever had the pleasure of quaffing. It is mild-tasting and exquisitely balanced, with just the right amount of ginger flavour to tickle your palate without tiring it out. I seriously doubt this beer will make its way to my hometown - I'm stuck in Simcoe for the week, which is where I happened to find it - so I will definitely be picking up a few more bottles to take back with me. Any fan of spiced beers or ginger ale in general should consider this stuff a must-try.

Was pleasantly surprised to find this bottle at the LCBO.

It pours a clear golden colour with an orange tinge. Minimal white head disappears quickly, and overall carbonation level is lower than I'd choose. Grainy aroma has more ginger tones after the beer warms, as they weren't immediately apparent to me after opening. Ginger is very distinct in the flavour, albeit nicely balanced with a decent malt backbone and reasonably bitter finish. Enough going on that it could well be a higher alcohol brew - the 4.5% makes it a perfect afternoon beer.

Overall a nicely refreshing summer pint ideally suited for any ginger fan’s porch or patio.
