330ml Bottle from Good Spirits Co, Glasgow:
Opaque black with a thumb sized, bubbly beige head that holds well at 1cm & has touches of lacing on the sides as well & looks quite creamy.

Dark chocolate with some sweetness & caramel coming through. There is some smoky notes & darker malts along with some spice & tiny amounts of coffee.

Dark malts & plenty of chocolate along with some smoked flavours along with a hint of bitterness & some subtle hops.

Smooth & well carbonated with some slight fizz & a medium body. There is some touches of bitterness & it's creamy in parts as well.

Definitely not the best Brewdog offering if I'm honest, the beer is fairly easy to drink but it just doesn't grab your attention or stand out from the crowd much. A nice effort & one of the better of the 2013 Prototype Challenge but it's not one I'll be likely to pick up again in truth.

Half pint at one of Brewdog's trendy but overpriced bars. Dark coloured opaque beer with an offwhite head which dissipated to the rim. The smell is certainly not too overpowering, with hints of coffee and chocolate. It tastes more of dark chocolate than coffee without being sweet. I could drink plenty of this if only could afford it!

Tried on-tap at Brewdog Camden in Camden Town, London.

Pours a very dark brown, very hazed with solid weight behind it. Head is milk-chocolate in colour, forming a fine but subsiding crest. Lace forms solid patterns. Looks pretty decent overall.

Nose is toasty. Dark chocolate aromas come through, along with a bit of ashyness to up the tempo a bit. Malt is well restrained apart from that, making the beer feel a bit subdued overall. Nice enough.

Taste starts with some clean roast, before the chocolate comes through a little bit more on the mid-palate. There's little body though—the mid feels slightly empty and grainy. Finish has some dusty dark notes, smooth but ephemeral, and a touch of bitterness in the aftertaste. Feel is very light indeed.

It's pretty drinkable—perhaps too easy to drink: it could have a bit more weight and be a better beer, but that's probably not what they're going for. Overall: for the foremost punk brewery in the world, this is remarkably restrained and conforming.

On tap at Brewdog Roppongi

Very disappointed that I ordered a half pint of this instead of Libertine, which is what I was leaning toward...

Appearance is the best thing about this beer - nice dark color, dark brown highlights, and decent lacing. Aroma of weak coffee, English ale hops and... Not a whole lot really!

On the palate, there's a little more going on, but it's not that great - certainly wouldn't have picked it out as a porter, as there's a bit of char and it's fairly dry - seems closer to a dry stout. Carbonation is prickly, no caramel flavors... Poor showing, boys.

It says "prototype" on the label, and I would say that it should stay like that. No point in forcing this into BrewDog regulars. Although it looks and smells pretty nice, watered down bitter citrusy coffee taste is not particularily exciting. I guess the malt base is somewhat similar to the one in Libertine Black Ale, which is much better beer. The bitterness is too overwhelming, kind of like in Porterhouse Wresslers.

Pitch black, one finger beige head.
Very low smell, some roasted malts. Weird.
Roasted malts in the taste, no apparent fruitiness (some crisp citrus only). Watered down black coffee. Spicy in the back. English hops in the finish, bitter, with hints of tobacco and quite some metal, actually. This was.. disappointing.
Way too watery. Finish is dry and nice if you're into lots of English hops. Mild carbonation.
This was very much a let-down. They say on the site it's "eminently drinkable", but so is water. Not tasty enough to be a session beer. Very very strange.
