#Mashtag 2014 - a beer for the people, by the people.

The #Mashtag concept is simple. We invited the public to vote on each aspect of the brew, from hops to malt to the special twist and even the label design, and from the thousands of possibilities this presented, the result is an imperial red ale, brewed with copious speciality malts, a global blend of hops, and blood orange, lemon peel and orange peel.

On the nose, there’s a riot of citrus, in many forms, from orange pith to lemon zest, via lime juice and even lemongrass. Fresh, bright resinous notes blend with light toasty malt aromas.

The palate is intense with toffee, with tiny hints of tobacco smoke coming through in little bursts, but the star attraction is an all-out bitter orange avalanche. A slightly psychotic, orange-that-thinks-it’s-a-grapefruit character builds upon and intensifies the hop bitterness, squaring up against the rich sweet malt base. The result is a huge red ale with a drinkable quality you’d expect in a beer half this strength.

A - Deep ruby with a slightly off coloured white head.

S - Lots of Blood Orange, Citrus peel and juices and Cara malt.

T - Starts with a big kick from the Blood Orange and other Citrus, followed by the Cara Malty backbone that most Red Ales have. Very well balanced and finishes with bitter Orange peel

M -Very smooth for a 9% beer. Carbonation isn't as heavy as I was expecting. Finishes medium dry. (405 characters)

Pours a rich ruby red hue with a two finger off white head and lacing here and there quite sexy looking, the smell is honey, earrthy hops, caramel malts and carrot cake, the feel is full bodied and well carbonated with tastes of fruitcake, toffee malts,A touch of piney hops and finished with a sweet maltiness and overall another well done mashtag worth seeking out cheers. (372 characters)

330ml bottle from Good Spirits Co, Glasgow (£3.50):
Dark copper amber with a clear body & a 1cm beige, foamy head that fades to half that after about 5 minutes.
Hoppy with resinous pine, strong citrus & orange notes. There's plenty bitterness with some sweetness (caramel malts mainly) & faint alcohol soon after.

Strong bitterness with pine, grapefruit & citrus taste along with some orange Sweet malts & caramel come through, some alcohol as well.
Smooth, medium body & light-medium carbonation. Some alcohol but very good balance & plenty bitterness.

This one was an excellent Brewdog beer, possibly my favourite of the 70 + beers of theirs I've tried. There was an excellent balance & wonderfully hoppy, bitter taste that went down a lot easier than it should have. This is definitely on of their beers that I would love to see brewed on a regular basis, or at least on a semi-regular one; I'll have to grab another couple of bottles of the stuff before it's gone forever. (979 characters)

Red with small head. Aroma fruits, syrup, apricot. Taste very sweet, resin, orange, caramel. Full body, low carbonation, note of warming alcohol. Despite being old it was great. (177 characters)
