BrewDog Vs Weihenstephan India Pale Weizen kicks off a new direction for our collaborations. We took a simple concept (by our standards) and teamed up with the oldest brewery in the world to brew a mash-up beer using the signature styles of both breweries.

India Pale Weizen has classic base hefeweizen aromas and flavours of banana and clove, with distinctive haziness. Layered on top of this is a tapestry of US citrus hop character. India Pale Weizen is a perfect symbiosis of traditional and modern brewing.

Bright orange color with a thick head with great retention and leaving laces.
Aroma with notes of fresh oranges, bread, flowers and some tartness.
Hoppy and citrusy flavor with notes of oranges, grass, yeast, just some banana and spices. Slightly tart and mild alcohol. Dry aftertaste with a medium bitterness, its 65 IBUs revealed to be more aromatic.
Light body with appropriate carbonation.
Herbal and citrus duel for its predominance, but the traditional yeast is always there. Given that one brewery is great in doing IPAs and the other on Weiss, I was expecting something exceptional. This is good, but it could benefit from further fine tuning.

Sounds like a match made in Weizen (which is the Beerpostles, a portmanteau of ‘beer’ and ‘apostles’, version of Heaven) or Helles... you get the idea, the terrible pun is free. ANYWAY I was captivated by this battle of titans - one of my all-time favourite breweries versus some sensationalist Scottish chaps that enjoy being caught in the limelight for outrageous verging-on silly beers. The two breweries couldn’t be further apart in mannerisms: Weihenstephan(er) being quite a monastic brewing atmosphere. So here we are, an India Pale Weizen... Prost?

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a Weizen-nonic pint - a glass I just invented.

A: Cloudy and spotty (them there ‘east particulates yerm) light amber bodied with a thin chalky lace on top. I like yeast in my bread and floating around in my beer so I’m as happy as a sausage on keep-your-sausage-in-a-hat-and-don’t-eat-it day. 9/10.

S: Spicy clove Phenols drop kick me in the face leaving a satisfied smile where a boot print should be. Backing up this tasty clove aroma are notes of bubble gum, some light banana wheat character and a touch of citrus. The “India Pale” in this brew certainly isn’t taking a dump all over the aroma and I kinda like that. 8/10.

T: Perhaps the ‘IP’ in this ‘IPW’ has lessened as this brew nears its BB date (as hoppy characters tend to do) or this beer was intended by BrewDog to be skewed more towards Weizen, either way this is a tasty little ‘ip’ with a big ‘W’ (in full ‘ipW’) with cloves, coriander and a dab of banana/bubble gum. Finish comes through herbal bitters, however without this bitterness there would be little to indicate that hops were indeed added to this brew. Aftertaste has a some tannin astringency which adds a cologne-like taste. I suspect I cellared this beer a little too long (expires in Octobeer). 7/10.

M: Mid to light bodied, creamy-esque carbonation... could use more body. 6/10.

D: Hit and miss, with the aroma coming on nice and bold it steps back with the flavour and the thing that really distracted as my glass drained was how tannic the aftertaste was - I’ve had Cabernet Sauvignons that are less tannic than this brew... it was quite a distraction for me BrewDog... or Weihenstephan... who’s responsible for all this tannin?! [Biff?]. Other than this distraction I enjoyed the Weizen aspects of this brew whilst pining* for more ‘IP’ in my ‘IPW’. 7/10.

Food match: Water... I need water.

*get it? ‘pining’ IPAs are usually ‘piney’ nope... oh well, back to the punning-board.

From XXXII, summer sale. In Weiss Damm glass. Playing Memoria. Great combination: wheat and hoppy. Refreshing and tasty. Its a pity that it's a limited edition

This beer piqued my interest right when I saw the name. I'm not a huge IPA guy, but I love weizens, and I LOVE Weihenstaphen. So I need to at least try it.

Appearance: Clear and gold with a lot of bubbles and a medium white head.

Smell-Standard IPA. I was a little bummed when I smelled it because I really only smelled the pine and citrus smells of an IPA and didn't pick up anything indicating a hefe. It smelled fine but I was beginning to worry that I had just been fooled into buying a atandard IPA.

Taste: At first, hps and citrus, a standard IPA. Nothing great but not bad either. Then, as it goes down, you start to pick up on the cloves and banana that you would associate with a hefeweizen, a good one too. I was really amazed, it really is half IP, half Weihenstephan.

MF-Refreshing and carbonated. Feels more like and IPA than a hefeweizen.

Overall- I was really pleased with this beer and glad I got to try it. It combines the crispness and refreshnment of an IPA with the tast of a great Hefe. I hope some other breweries pick up on this trend and begin mimicking whatever voodoo went in to this beer. Definitely try it if you see it. Soon, it will be gone forever.

Clear spun gold with pocked off white head that looks pretty steady. 4
Big banana and bread dough yeast nose, with some soap and just a hint of lemon zest. 3.75
Snap wheat crackers, some mushy yellow apple esters, then mild melon, pineapple, and tangelo hops. 3.75
Lemon chiffon end and humming bitter linger.
Light, crisp, slight oil. 3.75

Oct.15.15 expiry, so suspect of being 6 months in the bottle already. Which would explain why “India Pale” doesn’t really belong here. Yes, there are some light and pleasant New World hops showing up over a well-constructed if conservative weiss. No, there’s not the sandpaper and pine of Simcoe, or the creaminess and clove of Weihenstephan yeast. Even allowing for age, it’s just not enough to justify the 6.2%, the dream team collab pairing, or especially the name. 3.5

The colour is yellow (5 EBC), the liquid is clear. The two finger head is white and compact, it sinks slowly leaving some lacing.

The smell is hoppy and bitter with distinct notes of spicy yeast and wheat sourness. Hints of oil paint and juniper twigs.

The taste is dry with bitterness and sourness. Quite a lot of sour green fruits and herbal spices. Candy sweetness, bananas and peaches. Medium body. The aftertaste got growing hot alcohol, spices, oranges and some dough. The finish is dominated by alcohol and harsh green fruits.

The carbonation is medium strong, the many small bubbles are smooth. The liquid is smooth and harsh at the same time.

Too much harsh hops and alcohol.
