Welcome to a post Punk apocalyptic mother of an ale.

A beer that spent its formative years Blitzkrieg Bopping around India and the sub-continent.

This light, golden classic has been subverted with new world hops to create a devastating explosion of flavour. Steel yourself for Kalashnikov bursts of caramel, incendiary tropical fruit and an all-out riot of grapefruit, pineapple and lychee, before a spiky bitter finish.

This is quintessential Empire with an anarchic twist. Turn up the volume. Pay the man. Embrace the punked up, pimped up Maharajah of Pale Ales.

Nothing will ever be the same again.

Somewhat hazy straw yellow-golden colour with a fine pillowy white head with good retention.
Aromas offer a burst of citrus notes especially passion fruit, mango and pineapple with a light straw note. Softly carbonated with a softly smooth texture and a medium body this beer opens up with a light malty fruit sweetness which moves right forward to a fruity resinous hop forward bitterness which is actually not too harsh/abrasive but dries the palate lightly. Refreshing and quaffable offering a well harmonic momentum of dryness on the finish. (546 characters)

Purchased at the LCBO for just under $3.00 for a 500ml can. Served at 4deg C in a draught glass

A- Opens well and pours a 1" high white head that films out within 3mins or so. Very light gold color and somewhat filtered

S- Oodles of hops and grapefruit.

T- There's that grapefruit again! Lots of it. Not light in the hop department but it is in the heat department as you can't even taste a hint of it. Super well blended. Not an IPA typical of England that's for sure. Very enjoyable and unexpected

M- Creamy and tart at the same time. Very refreshing to say the least. Excellent summer brew as it is not sweet and you can have a few in the sun

O- Very enjoyable well blended brew. Me likie a lot. Super nice summer beer as it's bitter and not sweet base doesn't give you that sticky tongue you get from many other brews this style

Food Pairing

This wonderful little brew went very well with........... BBQ shish kabobs. Nice chicken breast with onion cubes, mushroom, grape tomatoes and sweet bell peppers

Enjoy (1,022 characters)

Poured for lunch at the Sporting Page Pub in Chelsea. Being used to in your face U.S. Midwestern IPAs, at first I was unimpressed, but after the first couple of dips this beer grew on me. There's a lot going on here with the hops, which while not fully integrated are well balanced with the malt which plays a supportive rather than a dominant role. Plus the Brits don't over chill everything, allowing the beer to breath and open up. Will get again. (452 characters)

Cloudy golden color with strong subtle activity. Creamy beige 2 finger head, lasting around 10-15 minutes, with a very good amount of legs.

Inviting aromas of fresh floral hops and gentle pine. Flavors of citrus like orange and lemon with a soft pine taste. Floral notes with a grassy herbal feel. Ester and tropical fruits with a dash of caramel. Slight roasted grains. Well balanced between the sugar and sharpness.

Thick smooth oily body with the perfect amount of carbonation. Well intensified medium strength finish, ending with a nice fresh fruity hops sweetness, a floral spicy tongue coat, some faint sharp piney hops, and a hint of smoky malt.

Overall an excellent craft having tender and delicious flavors with great freshness. Nicely balanced and complex offering pleasant citrus flavors, a soft piney feel, still with a perceptible malt feel. Highly recommended! (877 characters)

500 ml can purchased from LCBO for $3.25 CDN. Served cold into a snifter.

Appearance - Rather hazy peach colored beer topped with almost two fingers of a frothy white head. Some effervescent carbonation, decent head retention and a few little webs of lacing left behind. A great looking IPA.

Smell - A touch of pine but mostly mandarin orange, lemon zest and grapefruit, some sweetness from caramel malts lingering behind.

Taste - Light citrus flavors like an orange and grapefruit mixture, however flavors aren't nearly as intense as the aroma. Rather subdued. Finishes moderately bitter.

Mouthfeel - Very light body, modest carbonation, dry finish and could use a little more heft in its step. Still a nice IPA.

Overall - Glad I tried this well regarded classic, however, it's rather light striking an interesting point between a typical IPA and a session IPA, maybe the place where APA's exist? Either way a good beer. (926 characters)

Serving: 500 mL can

Pours a pale orange, which changes to hazy golden-yellow under direct light. Smells wonderful, full of citrus, tropical fruits and floral notes. I get orange, pineapple, grapefruit, and even hints of peach. Quite juicy and enticing. Lighter body, a slight malt backbone. Would make for an excellent session IPA. Really tasty, if a bit thin and not substantial enough as I am used to. I enjoy juicy and sweeter IPAs, so I am quite fond of this one. Nice bitterness, but hardly palate wrecking at 45 IBUs. Seems more like a session IPA or Pale Ale than a more robust full-fledged IPA. Very tasty, so I can't dismiss it outright. (647 characters)

500ml can into nonic pint. "16/04/16" on the bottom of the can. consumed july 29 2015

a: light orange with 3 fingers of off-white head

s: grapefruit, apricot, peach, slight pine. really fruity with a bit of sweet bready caramel malt in there

t: not as fruity as the nose. grapefruit, underripe peach and apricot with prominent floral and piney flavours. has a decent backing bready caramel malt characteristic

m: somewhat watery with medium-minus carbonation

o: a good, easy-drinking, well-rounded low-abv IPA that needs a bit more body (545 characters)

Poured from a bottle. Yellow color with small head and light carbonation. Smell is peach and pineapple without any hint of bitterness. Taste has nice pale malt flavor balanced with floral fruity hops. There is a hint of bitterness on the finish. Very good unique IPA. Not exactly a new world IPA as they claim because it is nowhere near as bitter as most west coast IPAs but enjoyable so long as you don't deaden the palate with an overly bitter beer first. (457 characters)

Serving Type: 500 mL Can

A- Pours a Slightly Hazy Deep Golden topped by a thick, foamy white head.

S- Grapefruit and tropical fruit upfront with a bit of caramel maltiness hiding in the back.

T- Tropical fruit upfront and a quick transition to a lingering grapefruit bitterness to finish off, all the while being backed up by a subtle caramel malt flavour.

M- Fairly light body and Low-Moderate Carbonation that feels right for this particular beer. Similar mouthfeel to a good session IPA.

O- Excellent American-Style IPA of the "juicy" variety that I particularly enjoy. The mouthfeel is light enough that this beer could easily be a session beer. (658 characters)

So after a full day of cask ale in London-gave this one a shot.

Big nose with tropical fruits exploding everywhere. A bit more finesse and balance than traditional AIPA but all of the flavor. Incredible at 5.6%. (212 characters)

Color light amber, clear.
Foam white color composed of fine bubbles, on average lasted.
The aroma is an explosion of mango and intense maltiness with a small dose of hops grass. Even opening the bottle, accompanied by a strong smell of fruit.
Taste Punk IPA is simply mango, sweet, slightly carrot with a dash of orange and lime notes, also in taste occurs hop, dry grass, is sensational.
Bitterness is quite large, but not residual, dry and pleasant, the way she should be.
Punk saturation is low, alcohol did not feel.
BrewDog Punk IPA is slightly greasy and while lightweight, superbly drinkable. After drinking one wants to reach for the next and the next and the next and ...

Bought a selection of Brewdog Beers and am singularly disappointed. This like its partner Dead Pony is quite simply a pretentious beer aimed at the yuppy or hipster "this is cool" market. I will admit I am old school in so much I like my beer to taste of hops' malts' coupled with the water area over the modern fruity smell/taste offerings but this is bad. If you like your drink to taste of tinned fruit then this is the 'beer' for you. (441 characters)

Aroma: Orange peel up front. As it warms a pithy orange juice sweetness emerges. Clean fermentation character.

Appearance: Very hazy pale amber pour with a low white head. Effervescence noted and assertive. Head retention is good.

Flavor: Firm earthy bitterness up front with moderate-high lemon notes. A bit of husky/grainy malt base. Very pithy citrus rind-like flavors. A bit of Pine-Sol note. Finish is bone dry. Aftertaste lingers with lemony bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with high carbonation and a slight carbonic bite. No warmth, astringency, or creaminess.

Overall impression: High carbonation impacts drinkability. Very citrusy and bitter. Kind of a one trick citrus pony. Probably no need to seek out again. (748 characters)

Poured a light hazy orange. One finger of quickly dissipating froth, leaving a nice light lacing on glass.Smells of citrus and pineapple, perhaps a little honey. Taste is very tropical, unlike a lot of IPA's that I had. Notes of tangerine, orange, pineapple, and a little bit of floral notes with very minor bitterness. Enjoyable. Mouth feel is moderately carbonated, a little on the flat side. Needs to be bolder here, more body. Overall a fine brew. Something I will definitely drink again. (492 characters)

After the reasonable and surprising mid-strength Dead Pony Club I thought it fitting to give the other BrewDog in waiting (from my fridge door) Punk IPA a go next. This one claims to be a post-modern take on the IPA style, however when I think of post-modern beers I think of a hop-flavoured cider (cider isn’t really beer but isn’t it really?) [no Doc, no]. So from a can of humble IPA - the beer style that has captured hipsters and tattoo artists the world over - can Scottish BrewDog challenge the dominance of US craft brewers? Probably not, but let’s give these bastards a chance.

Poured from 330ml can into a nonic pint.

A: Hazy jonquil... ahhh, jonquil - it’s been ages since I used you to describe something... coloured body with a foamy white head that leaves spider webs around the side of the glass. 8/10.

S: The aroma isn’t very post-modern at all, in fact it’s simply modern with fragrant starburst orange and floral/pineapple hops. There is a malt base in there providing a honeyed sweetness as well, but as usual in an American IPA it is “Hail lord hop in all its majesty”. Quite a pungent bouquet that I would be quite pleased if I was BrewDog. 8/10.

T: Again I’m having trouble getting the post-modern reference [just give it up Doc] but it’s a good modern IPA. The starburst orange morphs more into bitter orange, with that hint of pineapple, and the floral aroma turns full potpourri in the flavour department. The finish is dry with a medium bitterness. Strangely there is almost no detectable sweetness in the flavour - it’s slanted towards dry/floral/bitter. Personally I like a balance between bitter/sweet in my beers so it misses a point there (if I wanted something dry I would drink a vermouth dammit!). 7/10.

M: Mid to light bodied with a flat(ish) carbonation. Needs more body. 5/10.

D: So this is one of those ‘aroma promise under-delivered’ brews... I hate those guys! It’s the beer equivalent of a cock-tease. Shame because the aroma promised a classic American styled IPA, but it’s missing that crucial beer bitter/sweet balance. In any case it was still better than many other beers out there and for 5.6% ABV surprisingly sessionable, so it’s not ALL bad. 7/10.

Food match: Chinese food. (2,262 characters)

Pours a half finger of head on a hazy medium straw body.
The aroma is big. Lots of mango, pineapple and orange.
The taste is big on the bitterness, but the malt is always lurking in the background making is very drinkable.
The texture is crisp.

Bottle poured into a BarrelHouse Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours slightly hazy golden yellow with a frothy almost light tan head that settles and laces lightly.

S: Tropical fruit and citrus hops backed with a some caramel malt sweetness.

T: Citrus hops, tangerine and light grapefruit, a hint of pineapple, and some light caramel malt sweetness.

M: Light to medium body, moderate slightly fizzy carbonation, pretty crisp.

O: This beer seems to have gotten lighter since I last had it. Still ok, but I wish there was a little more body to it to help showcase the hops. (573 characters)

L: Poured this very attractive bottle of IPA in to my chalice glass and it came out light amber with a medium to large head. There was a bit of haziness too it when the beer settled.

S: This smelled quite inviting with both citrus and floral hops almost making my mouth water. So far very very good!!

T: Wow theyre not just saying that theres and explosion of taste in your mouth there really is! Lovely grapefruit, caramel, pineapple and some other tropical fruits!

F: Not too heavy and definitely not too gassy for me... just perfect!

O: A very nice IPA (one of my faves) but be warned the alcohol content is high and does not show when consuming. (656 characters)

Pours clear gold with decent white head and minimal lacing. Smells of hoppy citrus, mint, and floral hops. Tastes similar in the nose with upfront bitterness and dry mouthfeel. Alcohol well in check. Nice drinking ipa. Nothing too spectacular, but solid all around nonetheless. (277 characters)
