Welcome to a post Punk apocalyptic mother fucker of a pale ale.

A beer that spent its formative years Blitzkrieg bopping around India and the sub continent. Quintessential Empire with an anarchic twist.

God save the Queen and all who sail in her. Raising a Stiff Little Finger to IPAs that have come before and those it is yet to meet.
Turn up the volume Pay the man. Embrace the punked up, fucked up outlaw elite.

A cloudy, light straw colored, almost headless beer that is certainly not true to style. It does not look like any beer I've tried.

Smell is a strange (for an AIPA) combo of fruity yeast, bland grain, herbs, and just a hint of citrus. Many beers push the envelope of style nowadays, but I think this Scottish beer needs a category of its own.

Taste is a burst of yeast and mild bitterness, some fruity notes (apricot? pear?), an incongruous earthy/grassy flavor, and a finish some degrees short of long that is bitter without any of the good pine/citrus/herbal bitterness that should be the hallmark of
of this style.

Mouthfeel is strange, unlike any beer I've tried. I would say it is thin/medium bodied, insufficiently resinous, but the carbonation is right for the style this purports to be.

Due to above factors this is not a very drinkable beer.

Best by 7/7/09 Bottle poured into a pint glass produced a finger worth of fluffy white head that turned to a thick lace .The body of the brew however is a hazy pale yellow the beer that really looks like pilsner.

There is not much hops in the aroma actually the yeast stands out more than the hops. There is a slight lemon aroma here as well.

The flavor is really bitter that's about it. Is this what the world thinks an American IPA should be?
This brew is watery and light in the mouth feel department. I am not really getting into this one.

I think this brew is a one and done for me

Reviewed from notes. Consumed 1/31/09

Poured from a 22oz bomber into an oversized wine glass. Best by date on the bottle reads 7/7/09. Firm pour fails to conjure anymore then a scant ring of foam around the inner ring of the glass. No lace. Color is cloudy pale yellow.

Nose- Sour candied lemon zest.

Palate- Shockingly light carbonation. Wondering is the beer is bad. Medium bodied, some hues of caramel. Slight hop body, mild lemon zest. Moderately bitter in the finish. Nothing special. In fact disappointed that I paid $7.

Mouthfeel- Tart, massively under carbonated.

Drinkability- Low

Got this bottle at Sam's in Chicago a few months ago. Poured with a small off white head and a little lace. Color is a hazy yellow to amber. Aroma is very mild to hardly there. Flavor is also subtle with a bitter finish. Body is a bit watery and ok carbonation. Very underwhelming. Better as a Brit IPA than American, but still in light of most of BD's other brews.... Ho hum.

Bomber poured into a pint glass.

Appearance is a very light in color, straw yellow, with a white head that maxes at about 1/2" It is crystal clear with medium carbonation.

Smell is a crisp citrus, grassy scent. Different from California IPAs

Taste, well not so good...at least for my expectations for an IPA. There is zero malt in this. Taste is critric-grapefruit bitterness. No sweetness to be heard of. Very grassy hop taste.

Mouthfeel is light, but still with good body. It doesn't coat the tongue, but there is substance.

At $9USD for a 22oz bottle, combined with the average experience, I say this is not drinkable. Save your dough.

11.2 oz bottle into a tulip.

A: Pours a hazy golden color. There's a one finger white-colored head, but it has poor retention. Lacing is decent enough, though.

S: I'm not sure how fresh this is (because IPA from Scotland), but it still has a decent hop profile to it. Not an amazing one, though I can forgive that. It's loaded with pine, grapefruit, and *maybe* some apricot. The malt backbone comes through quite strongly, loaded with caramel and toffee. Not bad.

T: I pick up some Nelson Sauvin-esque fruitness, especially on the opening. It's weird, actually - it's a combination of grape-y-ness and mint. The more I sip it, the more the mint comes through. And the more I sip it, the more the mint ruins the balance of everything. I even dare suggest it's medicinal. While the general flavor isn't very good, it's not an undrinkable mess. That's great, I suppose...

M: It's pretty light on the palate, which is good. In spite of its age, it's also pretty dry - and that's also good too, I don't want this mint bomb to linger on my palate any further. Carbonation is about medium.

O: This would be a lot better if it were fresh. Seeing as I'm a 'Merican who's not in Scotland and don't have access to this AFAP (as fresh as possible), I have to grade it as is, which means I can't give it a good score. Come to think about it, is it really worth buying foreign IPAs? They're always going to be more expensive, and likely won't be fresh, either.

*Just a side note: There was a weird bubble underneath the rubber in the bottle cap, nothing looked rusted or strange, just interesting because I have never seen that before, I believe it was strictly cosmetic and did not effect any of the characteristics of the beer.

A. Light amber in color, slight cloud of color difference when first poured. A tickle of head, and thats about it!

S. Slight malt, a little yeast and that my friends is about it.

T./M. I'm gonna go with a big blank, literally. There isn't much going on for an IPA here. Starts like a Pilsner in taste and feel ends on a very blank generic bitter. Almost tastes like a roasted barley after taste (not horrible, just completely underwhelming!)

Overall. You be the judge, but for the hype that this brewery receives, even though this is on the low end of their spectrum of beers, it is very unimpressive. Steer clear or try it for some serious disappointment.

From notes:

Pours a slightly cloudy golden yellow color with a very thin, fizzy white head that quickly dissipates leaving no lacing.

Aroma is kind of weak with some pilsner malt notes complimenting the citrus hop presence. Hints o lemon peel, straw and light fruit.

This beer is a bit too balanced for its own good. The sweet maltiness overpowers the bitter and citrus hop notes. Similar in flavor and aroma. Hints of straw, lemon peel, slight spice, pilsner malt and slight dry finish. Meh.

Whew! Smell up the kitchen with citrus when I poured this ale. Poured a very light straw color with poor clarity. Nice light white fluffy two fingered head with lots of lacing on the glass. Freshness date was 1/1/09. I'm drinking this on April 3, of 2009.

Aroma is of fresh in-your-face citrus. Lemnon and grapefruit.

Flavor is a huge disappointment! Tastes like a watered-down version of an IPA. I'm insulted that this beer is classified as an American IPA. I think true American IPA's are hugely hoppy and extremely bitter in flavor. This beer weak excuse for and IPA is neither!

Mouthfeel is thin and this beer is definately not worth the $12.99 I paid. Given the description on the label bashing common beers, I would have thought that the brewer would have made something other than what they rambled against.

Bottle: Poured a ligth ditry yellow color ale with a thin bubbly head with minimal retention and not much lacing. Aroma of bitter hops are dominating but not as much as your usual American IPA. Taste is also dominated by some US bitter hops with a light dry malt backbone. Full body with low carbonation. Lacking some character and almost closer to an APA then anything else.

A straw like colour with a minimal head and small lacing. Nothing overly exciting and the colour is quite off-putting compared to actual American IPA's from America.

Lemon citrus and grassy aromas come through with little else. Again, not alot coming through with the beer.

Pale, slight malt like flavour gives way to a punch to the face of hop astringency. It's hard to really distinguish flavours in this, as its just bitterness, and thats about it.

Drinkable, to an extent. Not something I will ever buy again, as I think it fails to really be a good American style IPA compared to others I have tried. Even the DIPA's are much more drinkable then this.

A: Lighter than I expected it to be, with a rich, thick head. Bit cloudy.

S: No floral/hoppy smell in my nose that I would expect with a Pale Ale. Mostly malt smell.

T: Pretty balanced, initially, with a bitterness that sits on the tongue and increases with time.

M: Balanced mouthfeel. It feels light and refreshing.

Overall, just not really enjoying this. I expected big flavors from BrewDog for an IPA, and this didn't deliver. Setting aside my expectations, it is enjoyable but not an amazing beer. Just about average. It doesn't do much to stand out, which isn't a bad thing, but not a beer I would purchase again.

I didn't know what I was buying at the time, I just saw an IPA that I haven't had before so I picked it up, at $10.99 a bomber, this better be good.

Well, it is cloudy and light yellow to faint copper, with barely any head or lacing. The smell wasn't what I expected out of an IPA, it smells of hops, and yeast. The taste is bitter, tasting more like an ESB than a IPA. The beer is nearly flat, barely any carbonation. Something isn't right with this beer, maybe it is passed it's prime. Not my kind of IPA.

This is easily the palest and least impressive IPA I have ever poured. Very clear and straw-like with a decent head. Looks like a pilsner.

Some good c-hops in the nose. Really nicely dry-hopped.

The taste is...n't that great. Piney, resinous bitterness with barely enough malt present to do much about it. It's really just about the bitterness and not in a pleasant way. The malt leans towards bready. There's a slight grape aspect to it. The citrus in the aroma which is nice enough on its own, clashes with the taste as I drink this. A soapiness lingers in the aftertaste. Overall there's just not enough malt sweetness or depth going on to make the bitterness overly palatable.

Mouthfeel is crisp, high carbonation.

According to brewdog's website this contains Marris Otter Extra Pale Malt. And that's the entire grain bill. Which explains the light color and body as well as the lack of depth or complexity.

I tried a 22 ounce bottle of Punk IPA brewed by BrewDog Ltd. The initial thought after pouring this beer was, "Where is the head and carbonation?". The appearance of this beer was that of a Bud Light, not an IPA. The hops were present during the first sip then they slowly faded away. This beer reminded me more of a very drinkable kolsh, then an outstanding IPA. By the end of it the beer had increased all around. If you do find yourself with one of these brews please let it sit out like a porter or stout. I would say there are way better American IPA's out there!

A: pours a hazy orange with a head that sticks around for the duration. No lacing.

S: awful and stale. Very minimal hop presence. The best comparison I can give is that it smells like a batch of underwhelming home brew. Something funky as well

T: balanced and tame despite what the label says. Minty hops are the prevalent note.

M: medium bodied and just the right amount of carbonation.

O: not great but freshness is in question.

So an American IPA from Europe?

Poured into a pint glass hazy yellow with a huge white head, great retention and great lacing. The scent was noticable apon opening of the bottle. Very piney and citrus scents. The combination makes for an unpleasent scent to me, almost like a skunk. The taste is very european pilsner like. This beer doesn't taste like a IPA at all to me. There's lots pine and citrus notes, but just not right for the style.

I don't know what the scotts were thinking with this.

From 12oz bottle to Bruges hybrid glass on 6/27/11
*From notes

A: Slightly hazy golden with a two finger head and decent lacing.

S: For a beer called "Punk", this is quite pedestrian. Anti-bachterial handsoap and a good dose of minerality.

T: No juice, fruit or floral notes. It's simply plain-jane bitter. A large amount of malt covers for the lack of complex hops.

M: A tad watery. It just doesn't have the required weight to carry the ABV, and it collapses in short order.

O: BrewDog's Punk IPA is the worst kind of beer: utterly forgettable. It's got zero memorable qualities, and isn't something I'll be returning to.

Yet another dissapointment from BrewDog.

Taste: as the smell, lots of citrus, some resin. Very bitter too, didnt expect that. Again, not much malty notes.

Overall: unusual ipa, distinct bitterness, very hoppy, but not very much malt. Mouthfeel wasnt good, too little carbonation, weak and thin feel to it.
