660ml. brown bottle with a basic one color (purple, printed on white)label and a best before: 07/07/09. The blurb on the label makes the beer sound alot more exciting than it actually is.
Poured aggressively into a Duvel tulip a dark mahogany brown with a very small 1/4" of bubbly foam that dissipates as quickly as it rises, leaving no lasting lace or head. I had three bottles of this in the last week and all were the same in this aspect...very low carbonation.
The nose is comprised of earthy wood, chocolate, coffee grounds and a toffee like caramel that's fairly sweet. Can't really detect the alcohol in the aroma which is a bit strange for an eight percenter. The taste is very much the same with some sweet malt upfront, lots of chocolate and a rich earthiness. Even a faint smokiness comes through just before the sweetness turns bitter and blunt. Woody and roasty with initial sweetness pretty much sums it up. The mouthfeel was a bit thin and watery for this style, medium body at best. The balance was ok with a good astringency in the bittery finish, the alcohol was hardly noticable in every aspect of this brew. It's average at best for this style and for $8.99 for a 22oz. on sale, there is a lot to be desired here.
