If you are looking for some intense and complex Imperial stout, then this one is not for you. Very straight forward and linear, while it is not what I am used to getting in this style, it is very nice and unique in it's own right.
A - pours thick, but not compared to the big boys in the US or even UK. Not much Head and little lacing. Light in color as well. Lot's of red and orange coming through when held up to the light. Far from the black hole appearing stouts I am used to seeing.
S - Chocolate, licorice, coffee, and oak.
T - Chocolate, coffee, leather, metal and hops. Tastes fine, but not much complexity. Flavors stayed constant with every sip through out the beer. Again, not necessarily a bad thing, just different. Very dry at the end, that's where all the woody flavors come to be. Very little aftertaste, another nice change from the usual suspects.
M - Soft, medium body with very nice carbonation. Feel/body is light for the style but that has been the overall theme of this beer.
D - Very easy to drink as it is so much "lighter" than many stouts with this kind of strength (8% and above). This would definitely allow me to drink more than one and not feel like my palette's been wrecked.
In the end I probably would never consider this an Imperial Stout. Double maybe appropriate, but if there were such a thing as a "Double" or "Extra" Dry Stout, then Riptide would fit the bill.
