Pours dark with nearly no head. Holding up to the light, can see some dark red tones, but with absence of bright light, just looks black.

Smells pleasant, but not very strongly. Some malt tones, but overall not a lot of odor.

Tastes pretty good...I'd say between a 3 and 3.5, but closer to 3 so I rounded down.

Very light on the tongue, and feels like water going down. No real aftertaste, and only a mild stickiness from the hops.

It's an OK beer.

A: Dark brown with mahogany hues and a very small off-white head that settles fast and leaves small lacings.

S: Dark malts, smoke, wood, smoked ham, toffee, hints of chocolate, caramel and brown sugar. The smell is decent, some aromas are quite nice, especially the gentle smoky touch, but the sweetish components of sugar and caramel are a bit too much.

T: Taste is not as pleasant. It's rather sweet with malty flavors of caramel and toffee to the fore. Mild semi-smoky aromas and notes of wood. Slightly burnt character. The same disturbing character of brown sugar appears here as well though. The finish is mildly bitter with a quick flare of hops and roasted malts.

M: Medium body with a rather smooth texture. Semi-dry finish.

D: Decent. It get quite pointless after a while. The best thing about this beer is the artwork on the label.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a dark brownish-red color with a white head. The aroma is heavy on the toasted malt with some toffee and grass notes. The flavor is toffee, coffee and roasted malt. Overall, the beer smells and tastes about like I think a schwarzbier should taste like. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. One of the better BrewDog beers I have tried.

Tap @ Hamilton's. Poured black, could be very dark brown, with a short, creamy off-white head. Good retention with small amount of lacing. Smoky, burnt coffee aroma with caramel, cereal grain, and tobacco. Flattish mouthfeel that varied between slick and lifeless. Very nice smoke and roast malt flavors. Earthy cocoa, like carab, and cream. Nice bitter hops from time to time. Admittedly, I have not had as many schwarzbiers as others, but I did enjoy this beer.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2011. I love the label for this beer (see my avatar); it stands out from the other Brewdog offerings.

Poured into a Duvel chalice. A dark brown hue that appears black unless held to the light. Yields a large head of light-brown foam that remains for a few minutes before collapsing. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee with burnt notes and hints of dry, earthy hops.

Tastes of dark, roasted malt with a dry bitter finish. Strong coffee notes along with burnt grain, yeast, stewed hops and subtle hints of cocoa and dried fruit. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly but rather thin. Astringent - leaves the palate dry. Aftertaste of roasted malt.

Nice - I like this one. Easy drinking, but possesses more bitterness and roasted malt than most dark lagers. Well balanced. The only downside is the watery mouthfeel; it could be more substantial. A solid brew - worth sampling.

Beer pours a dense brown, nearly black body with a slight off white ring on the top, not thick or lasting. Aroma showed a slight citrus character and roasted malt. Taste is of roasted malt, slight chocolate tones as well. Balanced with some coffee notes on the tongue

The label is pretty weird - why can't I help but be reminded of the Robot Elders on Futurama? Silence!

This beer pours an opaque black, with slight reddish edges, and a wisp of beige head, that readily disappears, leaving some thin solid lace around the glass. It smells of roasted caramel malt, bitter chocolate, coffee, and some herbal hops. The taste is dry roasted chocolate malt, a bit of mocha, and earthy, herbal hops. The carbonation is quite sedate, the body light for the flavour, but pretty solid and creamy for the style. It finishes dry, with the roasted chocolate lingering.

This tastes pretty much like a few of BrewDog's heftier RIS offerings, only dialed back in intensity, and definitely in weight. I've come to expect schwarzbiers to be thin, mild dark lagers, but this far exceeds my expectations (admittedly borne of limited experience with the style).

Enjoyed in Sam Adams glass. Black with fast disapearing light brown head. Leaves lace spidering. Slightly roasty, slightly lagerish aroma. Medium mouthfeel. Understated carbonation, which is good. A little mollasses, only slightly sourish. A little drying. Decent interpretation of style.

a- Beautiful, black. Sparse, frothy head comes up after a very aggressive pour.

s- mysteriously faint. A bit of hop, a bit of dark malt. subdued.

t- Bold! This is a dark roast beer. Bizarre and intriguing. Milky, yet sharp on the attack. Black licorice flourishes in the mid, and espresso tannins linger long into the aftertaste.

m- medium bodied. The crisp carbonation on this one gives it a really nice balance and mystery, offsetting expectations.

d- very drinkable. dark and accessible, yet not mild in flavor by any stretch of the imagination. It is at once tactfully stylish and tactlessly brazen. Try it.

Pours dark brown with a very small head.
Aroma is very rich with sweet roasted malt showing dark chocolate, toast, and espresso.
Flavours are similarly rich, but not as sweet, and include more espresso and burnt toast, followed by a lingering roasty finish with a prominent, but not sharp, bitterness.
Light body and carbonation work well with the clean lager flavours.

330 ml bottle, best before 6/21/2011 (USA). Served in a pilsener glass, the beer pours a dark brown/black color with about a half inch cola-like tan head that went away pretty quickly. Not much lacing at all. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Taste is similar to the aroma, but stronger, with a good roasty flavor and a bit of smoke. However, there's also a chalky flavor that I don't exactly care for. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it seems a bit thin, and it's well carbonated. Drinkability is decent, it's smooth and not hard to drink. Overall I think it's a decent brew.

Bottle: Poured a deep black color lager with a large foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma consists of dry roasted malt with light bitter notes. Taste is an easily drinkable mix of dry roasted malt with light dry bitter notes. Finish is lightly sweet. Body is light with good carbonation. Not bad though a bit more simplistic then I had anticipated.

dark, rich looking dark brown with a small one inch head of off white that capped the top of the glass very, very nicely before it settled down leaving with it some nice lacing up and down the sides of the glass that seemed to really thicken up and push through as the time went on. Aroma is smoked malts right off the top. Dark, evil, with hints of campfire, peat, dark roasted chocolate and a good bit of almost a licorice touch to it. As I take the first sip a rich and creamy feel overloads the senses. Wonderful and rich, dark and foreboding, it seems that it is just meant to be evil and dark. Loads of roasted and smoked malts just rolling across the tongue. Lightly dry finish leaves just enough room for a small amount of smoky flavor to pop its head in

Kinda bummed after being floored - literally - by Brewdog Rip Tide.

A - Black with somewhat weak head. Quick swirl brings it back but it doesn't last long. No lacing, but it was served pretty cold, producing condensation...

S - Some presence of roasted grains but well hidden. Not a lot of hops either...

T - Underwhelming. Starts off with roasty flavors that quickly fade as the lager yeast takes over. Interesting combo, but lackluster. Roasted grains like this deserve more body in my mind - a lager yeast leaves the flavor profile lacking.

M - kinda thin, as expected with a black lager. Not terrible, but certainly a far cry from other "black" beers.

D - Eh, interesting to try but not much here really. I was expecting more from Brewdog - I just hope the Punk IPA and others are better

I picked this up without even realizing it was a BrewDog beer. I'm interested in how it is, though I don't know the whole story behind its conception. I'm reviewing it pretty much as any other dark lager.

This is a very dark beer, though it has a slight ruby tinge when held up to direct light. There is almost no head to speak of.

The aroma is rich and chocolaty! I'm quite surprised by its intensity. There is a hint of aromatic hops in the background too.

The flavours are very nice! Quite sweet off the bat, but some light chocolate and roasted malt flavours make themselves known. It finished off with a hint of bitterness. The whole while, carbonation remains low and drinkability remains high.

Overall, this is a really nice beer! I'll have to see if I can get some more!
