Appearance - 3.5
Pours a finger of chocolate milk coloured head over a ebony brown body that appears deep red when held to the light.

Smell - 4.0
Rich and malty, smells of baking chocolate brownies, vanilla and a little roasted malt.

Taste - 4.0
Leaner than the aroma might suggest. This well balanced dark lager has flavours of bittersweet dark chocolate, a little burnt, roasted malt and just a little hop character. Subtle and pleasant.

Mouthfeel - 4.0
Moderately carbonated, fine bead, light to medium body.

Drinkability - 4.0
Not a session beer for me, but something I would be happy to drink any time of the year.

OVERALL - 3.9
A very good Schwarzbier, had I not known it was a BrewDog beer, I would have guessed that it came from a top German brewery.

330ml bottle 4,9% Abv.
Served lightly chilled in a Brewdog Teku Glass.
Batch 318 BB 30/07/12

This will be my first schwarzbier - fitting I guess for a day in which I derived an interesting alternative proof for the Schwarz inequality!

Appearance: Awesome label design, one of my all time favorites!
Moving to the contents of the bottle - dark body that reveals deep ruby highlights when backlight topped by a massive light tan head that displays good retention and leaves some good lace. I hope Zeitgeist isn't way over carbonated; it always worries me when a gentle pour yields a massive head.

Smell: Of Brewdog's core range I loved Punk IPA (fresh) but thought 77 and Trashy Blonde were very bland. My fist whiff of Zeitgeist tells me that thankfully it leans towards the Punk side. Milk chocolate and roasted malt dominate with coffee, creamy oats, sweet licorice, a fair amount of smoke, touches of tobacco, sweet caramel and dark berries and some floral hops also being noted.
The nose is surprisingly complex for such a light beer.

Taste: Lightly sweet milk chocolate to start followed by coffee, roasted malt, some smoke, a light nuttiness, licorice and a grainy note (sadly). Great lasting bitter coffee finish.
Overall pretty damn tasty beer, but it just seems to lack a little of the power and complexity of the nose.

Mouthfeel: Light (or just over) body with a high level of smooth carbonation. A little too much CO2 for me.

Overall: Surprisingly good! Complex and flavourful for the abv.
If it was available locally I would certainly buy a few.

Beer pours a dense brown, nearly black body with a slight off white ring on the top, not thick or lasting. Aroma showed a slight citrus character and roasted malt. Taste is of roasted malt, slight chocolate tones as well. Balanced with some coffee notes on the tongue

Had from a bottle. Poured a deep, dark brown color. Opaque. Small off-white head that mostly receded. No lacing to speak of. Had an aroma of roasted malts, bitter chocolate and brown sugar. Tasted of roasted malts, dark chocolate, brown sugar and perhaps a touch of molasses and coffee. Could have just gotten those flavors off the malts. Very roasty and sweet.

Medium bodied with light carbonation. I thought it was a little syrupy, but not overly so. Goes down smooth. Pretty sweet for the style. I would have it again, but it's not the best schwarzbier that I've had.

A: Dark brown with mahogany hues and a very small off-white head that settles fast and leaves small lacings.

S: Dark malts, smoke, wood, smoked ham, toffee, hints of chocolate, caramel and brown sugar. The smell is decent, some aromas are quite nice, especially the gentle smoky touch, but the sweetish components of sugar and caramel are a bit too much.

T: Taste is not as pleasant. It's rather sweet with malty flavors of caramel and toffee to the fore. Mild semi-smoky aromas and notes of wood. Slightly burnt character. The same disturbing character of brown sugar appears here as well though. The finish is mildly bitter with a quick flare of hops and roasted malts.

M: Medium body with a rather smooth texture. Semi-dry finish.

D: Decent. It get quite pointless after a while. The best thing about this beer is the artwork on the label.

This is not really a Schwarzbier more of a strong beer along the lines of Eisbock barleywine or Doppelbock ONLY that it has none of the alcohol, fruitiness or carmel notes of these beers so overall not too bad but a bit of a letdown in many ways - not what it claims to be but also not what it aims to be

A - Head full of big and little bubbles, but it thinned out quickly and left little lacing. Black with a dark red hue when held up to the light.

S - Chocolate and coffee, roasted malt are all expected. A bit of fresh baked bread and hay are in the mix as well. Got a small whiff of hops at the end also.

T - The usual suspects, Very straight forward rich chocolate and coffee flavors, roasted malts and fresh bread. Very well done and what I was looking for. Very clean aftertaste.

M&D - Rich and creamy, heavy on the palate which is nice for this style. Great medium carbonation that I could drink all day. Went well with dinner (a heavy pork stew - Dinuguan).

S: Aroma of cocoa and roasted coffee with milk.
T: Flavor begins with dark milk chocolate and progresses to a roasted malt finish.
M: nice full body.
D: decent brew, very desirable.

A: Almost black with hint of red. One finger tan head dissipated quickly but left a ring of lace around Brew Dog pint glass into which it had been poured.
S: Malt, toffee, chocolate and dark fruit aromas emanated from pour.
T: Initially, surprisingly light on palate with roast malt and chocolate hitting about midway. Mild hoppy bitter finish with a bit of a sticky malt aftertaste.
M: Medium-bodied but starts off lighter than you would expect from its color. Mild carbonation.
O: Interesting black lager with good flavor and mouthfeel. Would definitely drink again. Enjoyed it.

I picked this up without even realizing it was a BrewDog beer. I'm interested in how it is, though I don't know the whole story behind its conception. I'm reviewing it pretty much as any other dark lager.

This is a very dark beer, though it has a slight ruby tinge when held up to direct light. There is almost no head to speak of.

The aroma is rich and chocolaty! I'm quite surprised by its intensity. There is a hint of aromatic hops in the background too.

The flavours are very nice! Quite sweet off the bat, but some light chocolate and roasted malt flavours make themselves known. It finished off with a hint of bitterness. The whole while, carbonation remains low and drinkability remains high.

Overall, this is a really nice beer! I'll have to see if I can get some more!
