A - Very dark, black with a low tan head.

S - Rosted, bready with some coffee notes.

T - Much like the smell it tastes of rosted malts, bread, coffee. But the taste adds a slight smoky flavour to it.

MF - Medium to full body with a dry aftertaste.

O - Good beer, price wise it wasn't too bad compared to some other beers here in Sweden. Wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

Coming in a 330ml slim brown bottle, at 4.7%abv.; BB 12/04/2014, served mildly chilled in a tall tumbler.

A: pours a pitch black colour topped with a 1cm-thick khaki frothy head, while the carbonation level is unknown.
S: on the nose, the richly roast-malty and lightly aromatic/vanilla-ish chocolatey notes are reminiscent of a fuller English Stout; given a very good swirl, the black dates, burned walnuts, mild raisins, smokiness, and other deep aroma usually related to a stout emerge in full force. Seriously, it doesn’t smell like any Schwarzbier or even Czech black lager that I’ve tasted and smelled, as it’s simply fulsome without lager’s key, doughy or mildly acidic edge to it, while a note of German rye bread definitely makes itself felt. Interestingly, as the beer warms up a bit, the doughy edge does surface to the noticeable level.
T: on the palate, it’s immediately clear that it tastes far more like a lager bier than it smells on the nose, due to a palate far cleaner than any dark or black ale. It’s almost crisp and light, coming with chewy roasty malts and rye-breadiness without much aroma around it, laced with a mild but still detectable lager-y acidic edge. The aftertaste shows considerable herbal hop bitterness and also bitterness from roasted malts different to one’s normal schwarzbier, while flavours of chewy bittern nuts, faint saltiness and bitter-sweet liquorice roots combine to deliver a satisfyingly lingering finish.
M&O: refreshing on the palate while being only moderately carbonated, medium-bodied against a truly decent flavour profile, this “idiosyncratic black lager” comes across as a fairly successful product by Brewdog, which is not that renowned for its lager bier making. Very likable and very… mixed. Definitely not fitting in with the classic “schwarzbier”, though, IMO.

Deep black color. Poured just one finger head with short retention.
Sweet malty smell with hints of dark chocolate and coffee.
Flavor is similar to aroma, but revealing more complexity. A sweet taste with smoky and toasted malts with hints of dark chocolate along with a spicy hoppy kick.
Aftertaste is dry and bitter leaving coffee notes.
Medium to full body with light carbonation with small bubbles.

This is one of my all time favorite beers. I first tried it two years ago when I was beginning to become a beer connoisseur. Just absolute magic. The flavor is complex and the color is beautiful. Zeitgeist translates to "The defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time." This beer is my defining spirit!

330 mL bottle tried 18 Oct 2010. Courtesy of L&D, thanks! Served in, damn, garbled pic in notes. One of the dimpled German mugs. 0.4 L most likely.

Large bubbly light brown head. Moderate carbonation. Very dark brown, almost opaque. Roasty fruity sour aroma with a touch of smoke. Lots of roasty dark chocolate to start. Mocha, espresso. Medium body, mild ethanol. Roasty bitter finish. Aftertaste is some lingering cocoa.

As has been mentioned before, decent but pricey on this side of the Atlantic.

33cl bottle served into a Westvleteren goblet. Reviewed from notes.

A: Pours a two finger head of lovely soft cream lacing, great thickness, and good retention. Colour is a solid nontransparent black.

Sm: Fresh. Bittering hops, cream, and crystal malt. A mild strength aroma.

T: Creamy open and finish, but with an undertone throughout. Lovely mixed fruit esters: strawberry and raspberry. Foundation features touches of caramelized malt. Some nice light barley notes accompany. Well balanced and built.

Mf: Wonderfully creamy, smooth, and wet, and of just the right thickness. Not overbearing by any means. Supports the flavour of the body. Masterfully delicate.

Dr: Average ABV, wonderful quality, an extraordinary mouthfeel, and an obscenely high price (per Brewdog tradition). Worth trying once, but not as special as Brewdog's gimmicky marketing would like to have you believe.
