Despite being retired, these are still shwoing up, eh? My bottle has a bottling date of 7/5/09 and a 12.1% abv.

A: dark burgundy brown; bubbly head evaporates into a bubbly collar

S: dark fruits, sweet, malty

T: boozy raisins, bitter hops, caramel malt; miscellaneous dark fruits percolate through (plum, fig, dates); brown sugar

M: medium bodied, not overly sweet, well-bittered

O: been loving barleywines this year, and I really enjoyed this one - reminded me somewhat of a darker version of Dogfish Head's Raison D'Etre (which is considered a strong dark ale) probably due to the raisin flavors that permeate the beer. Definitely worth a try while there're still some on the shelves.

July 2009 Bottled On Date

A - Pours a deep ruby burgundy color with a thin, but thick toffee colored lacing, clear, but with a ton of tiny floaties.

S - Whiskey, figs, prunes, raisins, figs, some toffee roast, a touch of molasses, brown sugar, and alcohol.

T - Brown sugar and molasses from start to finish, figs, prunes, raisins comeinto play around halfway through before switching over to an oak and alcohol effervescence finish with a touch of pine bitterness.

M - Thick and full bodied with an almost velvet-like finish on the tongue and mild alcohol warming in the back of the throat.

O - Follows the nose quite well, flavorful, and balanced without being obnoxiously boozy.

11.2 fl oz. bottle, with bottled on date of 07/05/2009, batch number 243. So that makes this beer about four years and three months old. And that makes this bottle the oldest bottle of beer I've drank up to now. I found this bottle sitting on the shelf at a Binny's somewhere in Darien, Illinois. I've been holding onto this bottle for a while now; I have no idea what to expect.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - Pours a viscous mahogany caramel color with some orange-brown-red highlights when held to the light. About an eighth of an inch of khaki bubbles that forms a ring around the glass. No lacing.

S - I could smell the beer before I even got the cap off. Smells earthy, woody, & creamy. Some barrel character, dark fruit, figs, dates, prunes, molasses, brown sugar, some wine-like nuttiness, & some alcohol fumes. Something about the nose reminds me of the Mikkeller Single Hop series beers, which is confirmed by the bottle which says they showcase a single hop variety.

T - Taste follows the nose: earthy creamy wood, caramel, toffee, vanilla, brown sugar, dark fruits: dates, figs, prunes, and some yeast when I really look for it. A trace of alcohol heat is still apparent. I am actually really enjoying this.

M - Smooth and creamy. Aftertaste is sticky, sugary, and sweet. Medium-full body with hardly any carbonation left.

Overall, I rather enjoyed this, and I'm shamefaced to know that I will probably never get to relive this experience, but such is life and beer. 12.10% is pretty well masked and faded after all this time, but I am feeling the cloaking warmth. Definitely a nice complex beer that has aged gracefully. Grab a bottle if you have the chance.

Mikkeller / BrewDog Devine Rebel ---4/5.
