American Double / Imperial Stout |  18.20% ABV

Notes/Commercial Description:
The irony of existentialism, the parody of being and the inherent contradictions of post-modernism, all so delicately conveyed by the blocky, pixelated arcade action have all been painstakingly recreated in this bottles contents. This imperial stout is brewed with copious amounts of speciality malts, jasmine and cranberries. After fermentation we then dry-hop this killer stout with a bucketload of our favourite hops before carefully ageing the beer on French toasted oak chips. It is all about moderation. Everything in moderation, including moderation itself. What logically follows is that you must, from time, have excess. This beer is for those times.

Black as hell...Rich tan toffe head and gobs of lacing.

Rum raisin, slight oakiness, and booze...and I let this set for 7 months...

Surprising, despite the booziness ( I might as well get that fact over with now) there's some complexity that is nice ( maybe patience-ie cellaring pays off). Chocolate notes, sweet cranberries, some slight dry hop bitterness. Finishes with some slighty tart cranberry and alchohol astringency.

Certainly thick, but a bit too sticky and sweet on this palate.

A must try, but only if you let it cellar. At 18.2% it's a split amongst a group of 4, sip, and savour.

A: Mahogany hue w/ tan head. Minimal lacing and head retention was limited to rim around the glass.
S: Molasses, dark fruits & sweet malt nose.
T: Brown sugar, oak, roasted malt, ethanol, berries & cinnamon flavors.
M: Smooth, boozy warmth and lingering sweetness and ethanol presence.
O: 18.2%! This is a huge boozy stout.

Look: Pours with small, thick, mocha head, some big bubbles present that pop quickly after the pour. Actually expected a bit more syrupy pour. Fast but good, smooth retention, thin creamy top that mostly diminishes soon, a bit of the mist stays on top for the whole ride. Almost no lacing. Dark brown, looks clear, but can't really see through.

Smell: Dark fruit esters, dry fruits like dates, raisins. Malt presence is strong in this one, deep roast, black bread crust, chocolate milk, dark caramel and coffee. Light alcohol, you can feel it sting in the nose, better to smell it like snaps, a bit further away from the glass - a lot smoother and fruitier, enjoyed it quite a bit. Some freshness, probably from berry esters. Also reminds me of juniper liqueur, dark fruit jam and a little bit of ouzo.

Taste: Starts with huge sweetness, milk and some dark chocolate, dates, raisins, molasses; goes to oak driven roasted milk chocolate, licorice middle and ends with medium roasted coffee bitterness with strong booze and medium sweetness. Doesn't go into unpleasant zone in the after, but it's fat and demands easy, slow sipping. Oak, some minty, herbal undertone and berry sweetness combined with light sourness also present. Leaves lots of flambeed sugar and honey sweetness on the lips.

Mouthfeel: Syrupy, full, medium heavy body, low carbonation, quite some alcohol warmth - definitely a slow sipper.

Overall: Alcohol still quite strong but the beer incorporates a lot of other flavors to play with, each sip something else. It's a big, fat display of huge amounts of fermented and aged dark malts that get tiresome towards the end, but I enjoyed it.

Reviewed from a bottle labeled “Tokio” with a red asterisk.

Poured a black-as-night body with a thick, creamy off-white head. Intense cocoa and French roast coffee aroma with a faded hint of dates or figs and other ester-like qualities. Intensely flavored sweetness (jasmine?) with a big mixture of milk chocolate, mint, vanilla, booze, and a bourbon barrel undertone. Heavy bodied with a thick, chewy, velvety texture.

This beer will hammer you with flavor and alcohol. It's definitely a sipper. Yes, be fully aware of the ABV and read the label to be prepared for the cranberry, jasmine, and oak aging qualities folded into this monster stout. No, this ain't your typical imperial stout, and in this case, this is a good thing. Let the flavor and feel roll about your mouth and wash over your tongue and the intensity of flavor and feel will satisfy any lover of big, bold, dark ales.
