11.2oz bottle poured into a large snifter.
A: Very dark at its core, almost black. When inspected in good lighting it reveals itself to be more of a dark chestnut color. The beige head is short-lived. Not surprising given the abv. There are some sediment particles in suspension after the pour.
S: Dark fudge, baker's chocolate, perhaps a whiff of jerky. Roasted coffee bean undertones. Big boozy component. Cranberry and raisin. Earthy hops. Jasmine is somewhat hidden, but there.
T: Very fruity and estery up front. Raspberry and currant have a cough syrup sort of sweetness. Cranberry brings some drying astringency. Fudgey flavors start to come out. Mild coffee roast and smoke. Earthy. Spicy licorice sort of taste grows on the back end. Earthy hops have a dry leafy taste. Big kick of alcohol. Spicy finish with a lingering cocoa husk flavor.
M: Medium thick. Syrupy and coating. Little in the way of carbonation. Mild cranberry astringency in the background. Alcohol warms like a cordial.
O: This is another one of those massive brews that drinks more like a cordial or a cognac. Normally I can dig these sort of beers, but this one is just not very cohesive at this point. Tokio strikes me as a beer that might fare much better after a solid five or so years of cellar time, a la Dogfish World Wide Stout.
