On Tap
Stone Brew Co.
Escondido, CA
Beautiful black with a thin off-white head. Messy lacing down the glass.
Lots of roasted malt and some piney hop aroma.
Relatively bitter along with a lot of roasted malt. I don't get any hint of Belgian style yeast. Some pine/citrus flavors but they're definitely muted. Well balanced.
Medium mouthfeel. Ample carbonation.
A solid black IPA/strong ale, but nothing more. If you're looking for a tangy Belgian yeast bite, this will disappoint. That being said, it's a very well balanced, incredibly drinkable, black IPA/strong ale.

Look - thin, somewhat sticky with no real head
Smell - really boozy and toasty and sweet
Taste - a little Belgium toastiness and some hops. Not as flavoraful as I was hoping
Feel - really thin, no carbonation
Overall - ok but not worth the price at all.

Bottled 12/11/10; drank 10/17/14 @ the Yarchives.
Poured from the bottle into a glass.
Brown/black/purple hue.
Dark tan head; decent lace.
Raspberry, chocolate, fresh earth & coffee nose-complex!
Medium thick mouthfeel.
Fresh earth, black coffee & mild raspberry flavors up front; dry tobacco finish. As this warms, a hint of pickle juice emerges. Not as good as the noses promises, but worth quaffing.

Cool artwork supplied by Stone, awesome color scheme. Beer itself is also black, and thicker than expected. Tan head 1/2" in depth. Impressive. Aroma was similar to a schwarzbier, was hoppy, roasty, thicker than that style though. Coffee and chocolate malt notes, hops, bitterness, c hops.
Taste offered a little bit of what you've come to expect in a porter, schwarzbier and black ipa. Hoppy, but not top notch in that department, offers too much roast to qualify, but lacks the lager yeast of a schwarz. Hodgepodgy, still a good beer. Covers abv well. If you like those three styles I'd check this out, kind of cost prohibitive to be a repeat purchase though, but it was a nice thing to tick.

Served in a snifter glass. Vintage bottle date 02/03/2011 Poured 10/28/2014.
Appearance: Black and opaque, comes off very thin with a subtle head. Off white with a tan tint and rose initialy to maybe 1/3" at best with a very hard pour.
Smell: Bland scent but you feel a grapefruit feel. Honestly weakest property of the beer but don't be afraid.
Taste: Light malts with a light citrus feel. Good but still simple. Still bitter with a light range of IBUs which comes off pretty obvious. Was expecting more especially considering nine out of ten DIPAs improve with age.
Mouth: Comes off a bit flat, might mke you think of an irish stout not sure of this os because of the brewery or because of the age of the beer.
Overall: Smooth black DIPA that satisfies most palates. Very rare and if you are lucky enough to find a bottle I would say grab it. Has room for improvement but rarely you find a smooth brew as this one that still delivers a punch.
