A black heart, this. Metal anger and a depth of sorrow-turned-bitterness. I heard the screaming. Buildings toppled in.
A depth of blackness, of the deepest kinds, the kinds that change men's souls into something other... or something, perhaps, completely natural, this evil. Blackness here, in front of me, a depth of it, only the faintest hints of anything brown, anything that used to belong to this earth, this creation. A monstrous white-cap, like so many black mountains in black-and-white photos, the cap of white but the feeling of desolation and emptiness, of freedom and angst. Lace, on the glass, like the world you wish for but can never attain.
And the aroma. Of blackened, bitter grains, once with so much potential and then charred, twisted, burned to death. Metal there too, the harsh metallic of grating sounds, the hops an earthy ode to a trap deep underground, and huge. Cavernous, and there are memories of sweet there, mere wisps, wraiths if you will, of sugar-cane and sunshine, fresh-baked black bread with currant-jelly.
But then the metallic beast rears its head as the sip is taken, just a small sip of cordial, but enough to out you... The black grains are overridden by metal, mercury and lead, and a wispy-sweet metallic tear juice, the dark tears of someone scorned, heartbroken, these are the things that harden your heart, make you like them, like those you despise... The Earth is there, her dark head reared, inviting you to come in, to die in the cavernous depths, she wants to swallow you. The greenery, the hops, are but a memory, an aroma that wafted and was gone, but a darkness remains, and the flavour is metallic, dank, cavey, earthy, sugary, and bitter.
And the feeling... creamy for what it is, an oozy-but-light conundrum, with a bit of a tongue-prickle, but little, and a warming finish.
It's a well-crafted beer, but leans far too metallic, despite it's good qualities. Not bitter enough to balance the sickly dark sweet, not bitter enough to override the metal.
It calls to you, calls you to embrace the darkness, and punishes any who dares. The breath of the black muse, the rising end.
It's worth a try. ;-)

A brown/black pour with a finger of tan head which quickly dissipated. Smells of roasted coffee, charred barrel, chocolate. Flavor is on point with aroma.. Lots of charred oak, roasted grains, dark chocolate with a subtle sweetness of rich milk chocolate. Medium in body with hardly any carbonation.
At $6 a bottle, it was hard o pass up on it seeing as that's relatively cheap for brewdog one offs, and stone has let me down seldomly. It was worth the gamble. A nice tasty dark beer.

Bottled on 12/12/10
Enjoyed on 3/20/14
A - jet black, poured like a Culver's root beer, lots of carbonation bubbles, big head that settled quickly to a small tan ring.
S - smell those funky Belgium hops, licorice, molasses
T - rye, chocolate. hops seem to have faded a bit, some hints of a stout variety, I get a little alcohol burn at the end.
M - carbonated, goes down easy, I get a good whiff of funk on the nose while drinking.
O - very nice style. I purchased this off the clearance shelf recently and am glad I did. I would like to try this a little fresher to compare.

Pours an impressive jet black. Smells like bread, citrus, a little sour. Tastes a little watery and sour, hints of toast. My girlfriend says it reminds her of soy sauce, which I agree with just a little bit. Like a cross between a weak IPA and a stout but not very impressive either way.

Hunahpu Day pour #12. Pours dark brown with big kahki head. Smells floral with a bit of citrus, hints of roast perhaps, and a little sour. Flavor is heavy scotch and dark fruits, comes in hotter than expected and not much depth in flavor. A bit boozy though only medium on the palate. Not my favorite. Blegh.
