Review of the 0,5% ABV version.

A: Pours a malty, golden, quite fantastic looking brew with a compact head that grows stuck like a lid.

S: This section is really where this beer shines if you are a fan of American over hopped ales. Apparently there are six different kinds of malt in here, but you would never guess. Extremely hoppy smell, creamy bitterness and a sense of metallic tones. Somewhere in the back there's pine needles and artificial smoke. But in one word; hops.

T: As expected, the emphasis is on hops, sour citrus and some "juicy" flavors that taste like tropical juice you'll have at the breakfast table. Some anise and fresh spiciness. The aftertaste offers a hint of resin.

Mouthfeel then; despite the lack of both carbonation and ABV it has it's charm in my opinion, given the shock of hops that hits you it's more of an experience than a great beer. The question stands, where are the malts? Sure, it's more of a hopjuice than a beer, but still...
Unbalanced. Pretty weird. Pretty fun.

Yes officer I have been drinking tonight as a matter a fact I have a fuck of a lot to drink tonight, I think 12 beers but I can't remember. Yes I will take a Breathalyzer and a blood test. Yes my breath does smell like hops. No your machines aren't broken, I forgot to mention the beers I was drinking are 0.5% alcohol by volume.

Chestnut color with a medium sized pale beige head. Some lacings.

The smell is impressive. Basically just hops - grapefruit, floral notes, bitter resins, tobacco and grass. One-sided as hell, but kind of cool.

The taste is equally one-sided, but here it just goes wrong. It's just bitter hop notes of grapefruit, resins and grass with absolutely no malts to back it up. No way near enough sweetness to balance it. It tastes like bitter hop water - and that is not a compliment. The finish is short and fairly bitter with notes of earthy and raw grassy hops.

No body to talk about, watery texture, a mess.

Even if I judge this for what it is, it's still bad. The flavor lacks any positive characteristics. If poking at the government becomes more important than brewing good beer, it's no surprise that the quality suffers. This must be a joke, and I don't find it funny.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2011. ABV is 0.5%. I remember hearing about this beer after Brewdog were attacked by the Scottish government for supposedly promoting irresponsible drinking. This was their response. Two fingers up to the establishment I say!

Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass. A clear coppery-amber colour with good carbonation. Yields a large head of white foam with good retention - this eventually reduces to a nice surface layer. A huge hit of aromatic hops greets your olfactory senses - notes of resinous pine and citrus with an undertone of sweet caramel malt.

Tastes of aromatic hops with some weak malt and a bitter finish. Notes of pine. The hops are there, but the malt is barely present. The bitterness isn't excessive, but the absence of a decent malt backbone leaves it unbalanced. Mouthfeel is equally poor - very thin and watery. Tingly and astringent, but the effect on the palate is more like black tea than beer. Aftertaste of aromatic hops.

Well - it's a good stab at a low alcohol beer. It will end up damned with faint praise, but I doubt there's another low-ABV brew out there with so much hop character. It looks great and smells nice, but falls down hard with the flavour and mouthfeel. Bonus points for effort - alcohol-free beer doesn't get much attention over here. Worth trying once.

Pours dark amber, liquid is pretty clear.
Dirty white foam, large head sinking quickly to a lid.

Smells very hoppy, old spices.

It's very fizzy, not sweet. No body, looking for any lasting taste. There's no maltiness.

It's too light and fizzy for a lasting appeal, but it gets more interesting after the fizziness dies out.

Interesting experiment.

Pours pale copper with a small head.
Nose shows sweet malt, bready and toasty notes, spicy and resinous hops.
Flavours include soft sweet malt at first with a hint of roast and some grapefruit/spicy hops.
Watery body as expected.

330 ml bottle, batch 189, best before 7/21/2011. Not sure how fresh this is, but I'll drink it anyway. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a clear reddish/amber color with a half inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both decent. Aroma is grassy and a bit of citrusy (grapefruit) hops, and some bready malt. Unfortunately the taste isn't as nice as the aroma. It tastes like bitter grassy hops, but not much else. The bitterness isn't exactly nice, but for a beer that has just 0.5% ABV, at least it does have some taste to it. Moutheel/body is light/medium, it's a little bit slick and has good carbonation. Drinkability is OK, it's not hard to drink at all. It was nice to try this brew, and would try it again if I had a chance to.

Dark golden colour wih a nice 2 finger white head. Low carbonation and decent lacing on the glass, The smell is pretty good you get Mango, lemon, tropical fruits and some hop bitterness.
The taste on the other hand is disappointing, No fruit aromas present like the smell indicated, only some hop bitterness combined with foul water flavor, my friend even tasted smelly feet. Body was medium with some hop bitterness lingering on the palate.
Sorry that was my first and last Nanny State.

This review considers the 0,5% ABV version. I like the appearance of it, aswell as the smell. Think hop juice, lots of tropical fruits, citrus, even a hint of licorice. The fun ends here. The taste i PURE hops, a light bitter liquid that leave a long aftertaste. Thats it really. I think it needs a bigger body and a bit more malt to be enjoyable. But it's certainly very interesting for a beer with 0,5% alcohol in it.

Appearance: Semi-dark, typical light bronze bitter colour. Surprisingly authentic-looking one finger head, although quite airy (disappears quickly). Looks like real beer, so splendid for a low ABV.

Aroma: Full-on flowery hops, but obviously no alcohol. Fresh and a little sweet.

Taste: Hops.. hops.. and then flatness. The sharp hops on the tongue make you expect something like an American-style strong IPA, but the finish is super light and the bitterness is just left in the air. It's a bit of a strange feeling, actually. The initial flavour is good though, and the flowery hops do linger a little at the back of the tongue.

Mouthfeel: Low to moderate carbonation, some sharpness from the hops.

Overall: Excellent for a low ABV, but a little disappointing once you notice that there's no body to back up the strong hops. Still, this is a brave attempt at making a tasty low ABV brew, and certainly the first one I've ever tried that has anything close to real hop flavour. An added bonus is that the beer isn't too sweet, which is a major flaw of many low ABV beers. This will certainly be a regular low ABV beer for me, although the cost is rather high compared to some of the competition (at least in Finland).

Had this at pré ZBF

I am kinda surprised by all the bad reviews here, I know it's partially a joke, but they actually put together quite a good and drinkable beer here. It seems sometimes if its not over 7%abv, people deride it for something, anyway...

A clear amber, good lacing

S piney, citrusy, spices, some floral notes, quite nice!

T pretty much the above

D rather dry, but nice,

notes, nice option and nice to see a low ABV beer that tastes good, I know many people at pré ZBF, March 2010, were rather impressed with it. I had tried it initially out of mere curiosity, i was pleasantly surprised

Big hop low/no alcohol beer? Nearly and a good attempt
Worth a try just for novelty
there is some hop profile here but also that distinct tinny taste to these beers overwhelming it
Better than most full strength macro lagers though

This review is of the 0.5% ABV version. The beer is clear, amber, has a tan head, a rather quickly receding head, but leaves some lacing and curtains!!

It smells lovely, a dash of toffee, grape-fruit juice and some hay. A proper AIPA so far!

Then the taste, very fruity, lemon, lime, red grape-fruit, no malt at all, much bitterness.

Medium carbonation, NO body, just water, spritzy bubbles.

Well, if you want a near-zero ABV, and want hops, this is probably as good as it gets. That does not mean it's good!
