This three way collaboration first made its appearance back in November 2010 and is back and better than ever. Sitting at a slightly lower ABV (15.2% compared to 16% originally) this beer is a combination of signature stouts; Nogne’s Dark Horizon, Mikkeller’s Black and our Tokyo*.

This is everything you would expect and then some from such a decadent stout collaboration. Thick, black and viscous, this is a beer which just keeps giving as it warms, with more layers of chocolate, coffee and deep roasted malts coming through in different waves of emphasis, it transforms in your glass and is best indulged in slow.

330 ml bottle in a thin cardboard box, batch #057, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 17.2%. Pitch black colour, low brown head. Strong and complex aroma of tar, sea water, iodine, old rope, heavily roasted malts, coffee, salty liquorice, dark chocolate, smoke and ashes. Extremely rich mouthfeel. The flavour is very sweet with loads of malt sugar, dark syrup and molasses, coffee, liquorice and chocolate, hints of smoke. No doubt a fair amount of hops here too, but they nearly drown in all the sweetness. A beer to be cellared for many more years, I assume.

This review is for the 17.2º version. Bottle that I can't remember where bought some years ago. Served at home in a snifter glass.
Black colour with some brown reddish notes, no head and no lacing.
Aroma is boozy, coffee, chocolate, raisins, molasses, vanilla, leather, cognac.
Full body, dense sticky and creamy texture, sweet spicy finish. No carbonation.
Taste of chocolate, raisins, molasses, cognag, some coffee, vanilla, pepper, Pedro Ximénez.
Delicious, fantastic.

"This collaborative beer was created when the paths of Mikkeller, Nogne-O, and BrewDog merged. It is an equal combination of ideas and inspiration extracted from each brewery's respective huge stouts, Black, Dark Horizon and Tokyo*." Brewed in the style of an American Double / Imperial Stout. Available in single 12 oz. bottles. This release is 16.0% abv, presumably the first release.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a snifter glass.

(Appearance) Pours a rich, dark chocolate brown head of a smooth, creamy consistency over a jet black body. Retention is below average and lacing is light and spotty. 4.25

(Smell) Very complex and inviting nose- chocolate syrup and cocoa nibs, caramel biscuit, moderate roasted grains, delicate lactose creaminess, some vanilla, licorice and earthy spiciness. Potency is modest. 3.75

(Taste) Incredibly bold and rich imperial stout flavor, Cocoa and caramel syrup character up front, transitioning to a very earthy and heavily roasted finish with a touch of moist chocolate, smooth grain alcohol, burnt, toasted grains and spicy licorice on the tail. A lot going on at the back end of this beer, certainly an "imperial" level of flavor, with many of the burnt characters taking precedent over the more accessible stout flavors, for better or worse. 4

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, mildly oily, residual and lightly sticky, lightly dry. Carbonation is light, generating a mild frothiness and a mildly crisp finish. Body is shy of high for the style, high overall. Balance is slightly earthy and spicy over sweet. Alcohol presence is moderate and there are no off characters to mention. 4

(Overall) It's a pretty bold Imperial Stout with a lot of earthy character, spiciness and good depth of flavor. The sweetness is very reserved, with more specialty malt character coming through. Drinks considerably easier than 16.0%, but a menacingly sneaky ale. The price is a bit elevated for this beer so the stakes are high, but I think more often than not stout consumers will enjoy this ale. 4

This bottle was a gift from old co-hort Juan and was the original bottling at 16%. It's aged very well. All characteristics blend seamlessly. There's a roasty sweetness with plenty of power against a background of heavy bitter, yet nothing seems out of place or extreme.
