Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: mdagnew on 09-03-2011

This three way collaboration first made its appearance back in November 2010 and is back and better than ever. Sitting at a slightly lower ABV (15.2% compared to 16% originally) this beer is a combination of signature stouts; Nogne’s Dark Horizon, Mikkeller’s Black and our Tokyo*.

This is everything you would expect and then some from such a decadent stout collaboration. Thick, black and viscous, this is a beer which just keeps giving as it warms, with more layers of chocolate, coffee and deep roasted malts coming through in different waves of emphasis, it transforms in your glass and is best indulged in slow.

330 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Inky black. No head. Stains the glass.

Smell - Dark chocolate, raisins, lots of coffee. Tons of black patent malt.

Taste - Dark chocolate turns to coffee which turns to acrid, bitter, black patent malt. Ashy and burnt. So much Mikkeller Black in this. Finishes very sweet and raisiny.

Mouthfeel - Heavy, low carbonation. Boozy and bitter.

Overall - Very tough to drink. If it weren't for the acrid flavors, it would be pretty impressive.

Big thanks goes out to beermeX2 for sharing this one at the Down South Beer Tasting while aasher was in town to visit! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller taster flute. Poured pitch black with a very minimal brown head. There was no lacing evident throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, caramel, sugar, and subtle alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, brown sugar, caramel, subtle alcohol, and toffee. It had a heavy feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. Based on the ABV and having had Tokio* before, I went into this one a LITTLE concerned. However, this one did a MUCH better job at covering up the ABV with a lot of sweetness that came in different forms. While saying this, it was definitely still a sipper without a doubt. Worth trying for the high ABV lovers out there.

330mL (11.2oz) bottle from Luekens Big Town Beverages (Dunedin, FL). 9.99. Bottled 10/31/13. Served in a Monday Night Brewing snifter.

Pours pitch black with a half finger of deep mocha head that fades quickly. Faint wisps of bubbles remain throughout on both the surface and aroung the edges without leaving any lace.

Smells roasty and sweet with caramel, cocoa, coffee and brown sugar on top of an abundance of roasted malts.

Flavors are similar to the nose but much bolder. Roasty, bittersweet pure dark chocolate, coffee, burnt caramel/ sugar, molasses, brandied dates, faint smoke, soft earthy woodsy notes and a healthy dollop of booze. An intense, flavorful and very much imperial stout.

Heavy body, almost syrupy with light carbonation. Finishes with dark cocoa, light smoke and burnt sugars.

By no means a daily drinker but this was an experience worth having. A worthy acquisition for any fellow fans of big imperial stouts.

I love this beer! Yes, it's expensive for such a small bottle but it's for the experience. The aroma, taste & mouth feel are all amazing! You get these perfect aspects of 3 beers all rolled up into one.

This should be served around 65° in an open mouth glass (I prefer a snifter). It's pitch black with rich dark aromas & perfectly blended!

If you enjoy a dark barrel aged stout with rich dark chocolates with hints of coffee & dark fruits? This beer is a must have!!!

The brew is dusty dark chestnut, has a very small off-white head, little lacing and rather small curtains.

A sweet vinous dark fruity smell.

The taste is also much sweet strong wine, dark fruits, sherry and nuts, Marzipan.

Little carbonation, soft and oily, a warm and slightly fiery feeling.

A good after dinner brew, went very well with sour blackberries.

330ml bottle bought from GapWines, Belfast... comes in cardboard presentation box

Poured deep inky black - nothing gets through even when held up to the light. Barely any head - what there is pours a murky brown colour and this fades quickly... no lacing at all...

Aroma - Lots going on here... rich booze soaked fruit loaf, lots of charred sootiness, dark bitter chocolate, strong liquorice, very sweet smelling - lots of black treacle and muscovado sugar, cigar smokiness, caramel, alcohol soaked fruit (blackcurrants, dates, raisins, prunes), roasted nuts - praline, soy sauce and balsamic...

Taste - Quite sweet initially with lots of black treacle and liquorice, some balsamic and soy sauce. After the sweetness comes some charred smokiness, strong espresso, very boozy - maybe just a little on the hot side, cough mixture notes, aniseed, alcohol soaked dried fruits (raisins, currents and prunes), bitter chocolate...

Feel - Very smooth and oily... very full bodied... needless to say that this one is a sipper at 17.2% !!

Overall - An excellent example of an extreme impy stout although it could do with a few months to mellow it out a bit. Very pricey at £16 a bottle.... definitely recommended...
