BrewDog
United Kingdom (Scotland) | website

Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The truth. You don’t want to hear the truth. The truth’s no longer out there bubba. Just chicken ass lies. Become a Dogma Disciple. Believe in the birds and the bees. Act crazy, be heavily armed at all times and scream in German. Dogma is an indulgent, decadent and encapsulating scotch ale brewed with 10 different types of malt all blended together with Scottish heather honey. Soak up the sweet nectar like a jackrabbit on heat. This beer is not cool. You may think it is, but that is just a beautiful lie fabricated by clowns and gypsies.

Bottle at the Flying Saucer at the Lake Beerfeast 2012.

The beer pours a yellowish color with a white head. The aroma is heavy on the peat malt, with some nice toffee and caramel notes thrown in. The flavor is once again fairly peaty, with some dark fruit and heather notes. There is also, as expected, a lot of toffee and caramel. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. This is much better than the Original Dogma.

Bottle. Dark brown with small, white head. Poor lacing. Poor head retention. Aroma is dark malts, honey, caramel, candy. Taste i sem-sweet, honey, light bitterness, some floral notes, dark fuits, booze is quite noticable. Little oily texture, medium to full body, soft carbonation, alcohol warmth is strongly present. Finsih is long and sweet (boozy). Definetely not my style.

330ml bottle, I guess a whole new entry was required because they dropped the booze a paltry 0.4%, eh? Oh, and reworked labeling, blah blah blah.

This beer pours a clear (I think), dark orange-tinted brown hue, with one skinny finger of loosely foamy, bubbly, and somewhat creamy tan head, which leaves some melting ghost face lace around the glass as things evenly subside.

It smells of roasted, lightly meaty caramel malt, separate wet ash, singed field honey, struggling domestic and tropical fruit notes, and leafy, weedy, and lightly floral hops. The taste is bready, doughy, and somewhat pastry-like caramel malt, watered-down treacle, honeyed wheat crackers, a faint earthy spice, equally tame yeasty esters, cafe-au-lait, subtle Nordic licorice, and still tame noble leafy, floral, and kind of perfumed hops.

The bubbles are fairly low-key and lackadaisical in their wandering frothiness, the body a solid medium-heavy weight (so not disappointing the inherent style here), smooth, and more than a tad (wee?) creamy. It finishes on the sweet side, as the caramel/toffee/treacle keeps things chugging along, the honey starts wondering about its per diem, and the hops bundle themselves back off to whence they came.

An enjoyable and rather easy to drink version of a Wee Heavy, the adjunct honey bolstering the base sweetness, but more in a flavour vein, than by anything all that sugary. Worthy of a go, if you have any predilection to malt-bombs, that somehow possess the ability to convince you that they are nothing of the sort.
