Formerly Dead Pony Club

This Californian Pale Ale packs a huge hoppy punch. A 21st century low amplitude, high voltage hop hit. Some people say slow is good. We believe fast is better. Being shot from a Hoppy Howitzer beats the hell out of trotting round a submissive paddock. That's why the internal combustion engine got mounted onto two wheels. Screw down the throttle and listen for that dull banshee howl floating back from those malted mufflers. Drink fast, live fast, sleep late and rip it up down empty streets. This pale ale is chopped, tuned and ready to roll. Fuel up and hold tight, this little thoroughbred kicks like a mule. Perfect for drinking by the bottle, case or even keg.

Ok so its all about hops. Loads of dry hops, and even better - the joy of Simcoe is the whole deal here.
Low in alcohol for the BDog guys and that makes it a great refresher.
The most flavour ever in a low alcohol craft beer.
Simcoe makes it really citrussy, fruity, tangy.
It rocks (282 characters)

This poured out with a big strong looking white head on top. The color of the beer is a slightly hazed orange color. The retention and lacing are great on this beer. The smell of the beer is hoppy, kind of tropical on the nose. The taste of the beer is really impressive. I pick up peach and pineapple flavors with a subtle sweet malt balance. The mouthfeel is easy going, light bodied and refreshing. Overall this beer is actually really good, I would enjoy this one on a very regular basis if I came across a case or two of it. Very good stuff here. (551 characters)

330ml bottle poured into a Delerium Tremens tulip glass

Look: Dark amber with a fingers width of head which doesn't stick around for too long. Diminishes to a few odds and ends of surface foam with no apparent lacing.

Smell: Tropical fruit by the bucketload - mainly pineapple and papaya but there's a definite hoppy vibe there too, rather like Citra-based beers (eg. De Molen Citra). Overall, extremely fruity - quite unlike the other BrewDog beers I've had (Punk IPA and 5am Saint)

Taste: Take the blurb on the bottle at face value and you'd be preparing yourself for a hop bomb. Sure, there are hops there but the fruity flavours are dominant. Quite a dry and bitter finish with hop and pine resin undertones. I reckon the balance between the hops and other flavours is pretty much bang on.

Feel: Mouthfeel is a little bit insipid, although given that this is 'only' 3.8% ABV that's probably not surprising. Quite an astringent finish, although not unpleasantly so.

Overall: Colour me surprised - for all their bluster and predeliction for high-octane novelty beers, BrewDog have won themselves another convert with this. Having my tastebuds assaulted with hop bitterness isn't on my top 10 things to do, yet this works a treat. Eminently sessionable, if that's your idea of a good time, and definitely more drinkable than some of their other offerings. (1,362 characters)

Expected this to be a weaker version of Punk IPA. What a pleasant surprise! For me this Beer deliveres what it says on the bottle! Strong hop/ citrus aromas & flavours that certainly make sure that this is a beer that punches above it's ABV. Looking forward to cracking a few bottles of these at next summer's barbeques. (321 characters)

Appearance: Slightly darker than typical pale ales, some ruby colour. One finger head, recedes quickly.

Aroma: Hoppy! Flowers, herbs, honey. Authentic California Pale Ale aroma.

Taste: Mild but tasty. Hops and floral notes, some sweetness, but a dry finish.

Mouthfeel: High carbonation, sparkly even. Light bodied. Delightful!

Overall: Pretty good reinvention of the California Pale Ale from Brewdog. (404 characters)

An outstanding 'session' ale - packs a lot of punch and flavour for a 3.8% beer.

Having been underwhelmed by some other recent 'session' ales I was pleasantly surprised with this little gem - my new benchmark for the 'session' ale style. Will take a lot to beat - can't imagine a sub 4% beer packing much more flavour.

Full of peach, pine, grapefruit, citrus, spice, orange, melon, marmalade and malt biscuit - delicious! (423 characters)

Slightly hazy yellow-amber pour with a two finger foamy white head with decent retention and lacing. Big, bold, perfumey West Coast nose full of resiny hops, citrus, and tropical fruit with hints of peach, orange zest, pine, grapefruit, and a touch of pineapple. The taste mirrors the nose, albeit a tad less bold. Resiny hops, pine, peaches, grapefruit, tangerines, and some great herbal and subtle vinous notes. The mouthfeel is light bodied with moderately fizzy carbonation, slightly oily, with a nice tangy bitter finish. Overall, this is a really well done APA. It's well balanced, flavorful, and very drinkable. (618 characters)

330 ml bottle at The Local Pub, Athens Greece. Orange body with a nice white head. The smell was mindblowing! Pine, citrus, pineapple, Grass, some earthy and floral notes from the hops, all in a perfect balance, right in your face!!! The taste was pretty much the same but subtler, with notes of grapefruit and very hoppy! The body was light, which makes this beer a perfect session beer, one you can’t stop in the first bottle!!! Excellent! (443 characters)

Bottle: Poured a light hazy amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of fresh floral citrus notes with lightly sweet undertones. Taste is also dominated by fresh citrus notes with light floral notes and sweet undertones with fresh fruity esters. Body is quite full with good carbonation. Nice fresh hops profile with nice mix between Simcoe and Citra hops with plenty of character with little alcohol. (452 characters)

As a newb this is what tops my list at the moment.

Great dry taste, somewhat bitter, citrus, tropical fruits.

Somewhat watery feel, medium carbonation.

I thought this had more ABV, but it's just 3.8% (202 characters)

Poured from a 33cL can into a wine glass. Best before 14 October 2015.

A: Healthy head tops an almost-clear golden-orange beer with lots of effervescence.

S: Fruity hops. Piney hops. Orange juice. I like it a lot. Remarkably pungent, with no evidence of dry-dry malt I expect from hoppy beers this light.

T: Quite good! A tinge of dusty-dry pale malt, but this is soon swept away by the potent hop bill that refuses to be denied. More abrasive than anticipated, the fruit comes later, just before the bitter aftertaste.

M: Light and dry and pretty fun.

O: Overall, a great 3.8% drinking experience. Recommended! Hope to have again. (636 characters)

Obvious riff on a hopped-to-high-hell American pale ale, gotta say the nose is spot on though, resplendent with fresh citrus, body is a little thin, not surprising given the ABV, but somehow the decently buzzy carbonation makes it all work. It's a bit of a niche beer -- you'd have to be in the mood for something as brash as this. But, if so, I think it'd work rather well. (374 characters)

Clear amber with sandy lumpy head that rims and laces. Big fresh resiny grapefruit nose - pow!
Toast, crispbreads and some toasted hazelnuts before lots of oily citrus: tangerine, pink grapefruit and blood orange rind.
Cotton candy and fruit punch finish and sherbet-y tart-sour finish, like fizzy candy. Soft, lively, light, crisp.

Simcoe, Citra and HBC are the hops.

Huge fresh hop character. I thought the malts were too big at first, but once all that citrus kicks in, totally not the case. No cattiness, so I can only guess it's Simcoe for bitterness with Citra late. HBC is a new one that's supposed to bring blueberry; I could see that.

I'd drink this by the crate. Definitely gets marked up for the low ABV - American brewers, take note. Fine replacement for whatever this bumped out of the Brewdog core range. (825 characters)

From SlowBeer. BB Aug 13.

Pours hazy amber. One finger coarse white head fades to film. Spotty lace.

Aromas of grassy hops, citrus, lemon zest.

Taste is good for ABV. Hoppy, balanced, citrus. Grapefruit, dry pine. The typical Brewdog hops are always present on the back palate, but do not overpower.

Mouthfeel is light, just a smidge watery, but lets call it plain drinkable.

Really good beer for the ABV. (410 characters)

Clear golden amber colour. Small, but persistent, off white head.

Lovely hoppy aroma. Bright citrus notes. Light caramel malt.

Lots of crisp, citrus hops. Nice orange and pine notes. Light caramel malt. Firm bitterness. Very good.

Medium-light body with moderately-high carbonation. Good. Very crisp.

A nice, easy drinking pale ale. Very quaffable. (352 characters)

Big thanks to Sc0pey for hand-delivering this one from across the pond! Poured from a 330 mL can into an Upland pint glass.

A: Nearly clear with some chill haze, amber in color. Forms less than a finger of white head that recedes quite quickly. Somewhat above average amount of carbonation bubbles streaming to the top.

S: Citrus (lemon and orange), tropical fruit and resinous hops. Some lightly toasted malts give it some sweetness on the nose as well. Just a bit of floral or herbal character as well.

T: As in the nose, citrus and tropical fruit hops hit the tongue first. The cracker malt backbone shows up to give just a bit of balance, followed by some spicy, melon, herbal, grassy hops. The citrus and spicy/melon hops linger into the hang - moderately bitter. The melon and spice character increases as the beer warms somewhat during the drink.

M: Medium body for style. Lots of carbonation sensation plus the hop bitterness leads to a very effervescent mouthfeel - quite unexpected, but not a bad thing. Minimal alcohol presence.

O: I'm confused...BrewDog can make a solid, tasty APA without any weird flavors, ridiculous alcohol content or advertising gimmicks? I'm kidding (kind of), but really this was a surprise. Not the best APA out there (not even close), but really quite enjoyable. I don't know what the cost on a can would have been, but if this were reasonably priced, cans would often be in my fridge. My biggest objection might be the melon/spice hop character - still not my favorite. But a minor quibble. Solid, well-done. (1,552 characters)

Poured into an english pint.
Pours orange amber with some sediment, head is off-white 2-finger, quickly dissipating to some foam on a surface. Aroma of tropical fruits, citrus and pine. Taste is well balanced - ample bitterness, light body and drinkability. Excellent session beer. (281 characters)

The glass is filled with a clear bronze/orange color. There is about two finger of solid white head.
The aroma is very pleasant - sweet, citrusy hops fill your nose.
The taste is quite bitter, although still remarkably easy to drink. It has a very dry feel, with pleasantly bitter aftertaste. Again, although more bitter, still very easy to drink. (348 characters)

330ml bottle. Wine glass. Amber color, clear appearance. White froth, thin layer on top, good retention when shaked. Intense herbal & resinous aromas. Sharp resinous bitter upfront on a solid malty backbone. Light body. Soft carbonation. Oily texture. Hints of herbal infusion, sharp grapefruit & lima flavors. Malty, bitter & refreshing sensations !! (351 characters)

Picked this up at a local beer and wine store in Shanghai. I like PunkIPA a lot and wanted to give this one a shot as a session type of beer.

The beer looks great with its orange body and foamy offwhite head and you can smell it as soon as you open the bottle. The beer is fruity and citrus smelling and very fresh. It's very inviting. The taste is very hoppy but accessible. Fruity mostly with lots of light fruits, citrus, and honey. Not much of a malt profile in here. Good for a hop fix if you don't want a lot of booze. (525 characters)

On tap at the Dundee BrewDog pub.
Clear copper colored body with a good head.
Aroma: pungent but pleasing mix of fruity and resinous hopst.
The hops are also quite pronounced in tasting, but this has mild bitterness,
Near medium body with medium carbonation.
O: wow, this is a great session APA for hop heads! It has a load of hop aroma and flavor; you'll think you are drinking an IPA. Very impressive: a big beer at 3.8%. (429 characters)

Pours a light orange. Good head.

Strong pine and grapefruit aroma. Honey and cordial. Some Thai-spice. Fairly classic BrewDog hoppiness.

Taste has more hop taste.

Fairly watery, as to be expected, with decent carb.

Enjoyable but constrained by its style it probably lacks a little complexity.

Definitely stands up well as a bitter-style beer compared to others but I felt Moor Revival had an edge over this one. Definitely worth trying. (441 characters)

330ml bottle bought from Sainsburys

Poured a light golden amber colour with a slight haze... White head poured fairly thick and foamy then faded to decent light covering... light carbonation... good sticky lacing lines cling to the glass...

Aroma - Light maltiness mixed with a good dose of citrusy and peppery hops, pine, tart fruits (grapefruit, lemons, apples), very floral, quite grassy, faint honey sweetness, light breadiness, some sea salt...

Taste - Good grassy and citrus hop bitterness, light pine, tart fruits (grapefruits, apples), light sweet biscuit malts, hint of wheat, peppery, some salty notes, floral and perfumed...

Feel - Quite smooth with a little bite underneath... light / medium body. Very, very quaffable and refreshing...

Overall - A excellent, straightforward, hoppy and very drinkable APA from Brewdog... recommended... (853 characters)
