Interesting beer, similar to a hoppy fruitcake!

aroma: fruitcake, peach, dates and caramelised orange predominate.

taste: citrus/orange, orange peel, toffee, apricot, spice, dark malt, fruitcake, dark orange fruit and slight brown sugar.

A tasty beer that is a mish mash of a few different beer styles that work reasonably well together.

A - Pours a amber/slightly reddish colour. With small head that disappears looking rather flat

S - Awfully sweet, almost like a sweet white wine (Riesling), a hoppy aromas with some slight candy apple

T - Not as sweet as the nose. Slight hoppiness with a some caramel, toffee and a slight bitter but bland finish

M - Light bodied, very watery and flat

O - A very ordinary beer, not even close to a dark ale and I do not reckon I will finish it

Brewed for GABS festival in Melbourne, May 2014; tried there on tap. Official program lists ABV as 5.2% but not sure.

Pours an amber colour, with dense beige head that sinks quite quickly. Nice head, but overall looks a bit listless.

Smells sweet upfront, with a touch of vanilla and caramel before hops come through in a bigger way than I expected. US-style with lots of citrus fruit. Bit light on the malt compared to what I expected.

Again mildly hoppy on the palate. Caramel and vanilla notes upfront for alight malt start but yeah, US hops are a bit dominant for something advertised as a dark date ale. Expected darker, more complex sugars and it comes across quite dry and tangy. Not a bad beer though.

Decent, but not quite what I was expecting.

Ironically* this was one of the next beers in my fridge to be reviewed [I have a fridge-door beer review system, it’s one of those “chaos=order” type deals]. First thing that grabbed my attention about this limited release was the Roy Lichtensteinesque styled label. Then I saw that it’s brewed with dates, double intrigued it made its way to my chaotic fridge-door TBB (To Be Bruviewed) shelf. Oh yeah and the just-above-dad-joke-level pun name completed the trifecta.

Poured from a 650ml bottle into a nonic pint.

A: Dream Date presents with a clear copper body with an off-white head that settles to a thin layer of lace on top. Could be a little darker for a Dark Ale. 5/10.

S: The dates provide an intriguing over-ripe dried fruit and fig ester, and there is a broad caramel malt base, along with citric hops as well. More hops linger on in the background giving it a touch of a floral quality. Originally was expecting to be overwhelmed by sweet aromas but it is balanced out well by the hops. 8/10.

T: Remarkable, it’s not at all what was anticipated, for one it’s not sweet at all, more hop driven than you would think, and using dates has given it a dry fruit-middle eastern spice feel to it. The flavours are: Dried dark fruits, citric/piney hops, cardamom and vanilla. Finish is long and dry. 7/10.

M: Mid to light bodied with a light carbonation. 6/10.

D: Again I was really expecting some sweet cloying date characters, something you would expect in a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, but it really hit me as more of a restrained American India Pale Ale. In a way I’m disappointed by its lack of “dateness” however it was still smooth and enjoyable. Was it a dream date? No, but that’s only because my dream date would involve me with a fine lady, not a beer [beat that for a dad joke!]. 7/10. Total: 7/10.

Food match: An exotic middle eastern spiced lamb kofta with tagine roasted vegetables would go down quite well with this brew.

650ml bottle. Clear copper brown pour with a decent sized off white head that leaves lace rings with each mouthful. Nose offers caramel malts, dark fruits, light citrus and piney hops. Palate is quite thin for the ABV and certainly not as sweet and malty as your average amber ale with a subtle spicy finish and low hop bitterness. Dates are there but not sticky and this is actually quite sessionable.
