Poured from 11.2 oz bottle into tulip. Purchased at state line liquors in MD.
Pours a beautiful hazy golden color with massive froathy head. The aroma is not good...lots of off aromas here...diacetyl or something...very macro smelling...
The flavor however is great. really soft bready malt, wheat, and a bit of the spelt shines through. Some nice juicy hop flavors to balance the malt and wheat. Its just so soft and easy...definitely crushable. Overall, a really fantastic brew. I love tired hands and I can see brew on tap their any day...get past the aroma and you have a phenom brew.

330 mL bottle poured into a HF wine glass

A: A cloudy straw yellow body with a sparkling thick white foam head about 2" high that holds on for several minutes, but leaves no lacing. The head readily reforms upon swirling the glass gently. The beer has very fine carbonation with tiny bubbles.

S: Hints of citrus and Belgian pale malt with overtones of grass and hay. Notes of pepper and a touch of barnyard funk. Strong sense of aroma dry hopping.

T: Classic saison with an emphasis on lemon and grapefruit followed by a pleasant hop bitterness. A slight grassy finish that doesn't linger, but fades into a clean dry palate.

M: medium body with high carbnonation typical of a Belgian saison. No oily aftertaste..

O: Crushable describes this well...a blend of old world Belgian tradition withTired Hands new world hoppy addition. I'd drink this any day.

Bottled 10/10/13 and bought recently in Brussels. Pale champagne color, but cloudy as the Belgian sky, not even that translucent. Managed to keep a large gout of pale lees out of the glass. Strong bubbling action fed what started as 2 fingers of foam and persisted as a good scrim of bone-white foam. Pleasing blast of herbacious hops in the first noseful, then a bit of hay, wet dog and floral hop lingered on. Grapefruit-pith hop attack, cilantro, rounded with some yellow fruits, with the bitters persisting throughout. Quite clean and cleansing mouthfeel, the carbonation clearly there, but weighted with a bit of oil in the finish, interesting to feel as well as to quaff. Seems like a modern take on a saison, very much within the signature of this brewery, not evoking romantic images of a dusty Walloon barn, but it does make me think of future summer days, standing over the BBQ, and the point of a saison is to be something nice to drink rather than the most precise flavor profile. A nice addition to the category.

Poured into a Gavroche tulip. Pours a hazy light straw amber with a one finger snow white head with great retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of slightly tart citrus, grassy hops, mild saison yeast. Flavor is intense tart citrus; lemon and grapefruit, saison yeast followed by light lemon citrus hops, developing light hints of caramel and stone fruit before finishing much like the start with tart citrus, hops and a lingering citrus rind bitterness. Medium bodied. A very citrusy saison, but there are some faint hard to describe flavors that add to the interest (perhaps the spelt?). Nicely made, bends the style while still tasting good and authentic. This would be a great summer ale when looking for a somewhat tart, refreshing saison.

Straight pour from an 11.2oz/330ml pry-off bottle to a nucleated can glass. Bottling date of October 10, 2013/freshness date of October 10, 2014 printed in black ink on the top of the cap (“BOT 10/10/13 BBD 10/10/14”), making this beer close to six months old. Not entirely sure what to expect in terms of freshness, since it’s some incarnation of saison, we shall see.

Appearance (3.5): Well, it sure is a heady bastard: a solid four fingers or more of bone-white foam immediately rise from the pour, capping an evenly hazy, bright yellow-golden body (straw-colored?), with lots of tiny bubbles rushing to the top. The head dies down slowly with huge, fat bubbles that leaves a crazily uneven surface until it’s just a film on the surface. But it does leave a thick, chunky collar all the way around the top and fat swaths of wide-bubbled lace here and there.

Smell (4.0): Pretty much classic saison: dry hay, slightly sweet, musty, moist earth, strongly floral and grassy hop aromas, and a dry, rustic breadiness that’s part country wheat and part dry biscuits, fresh-baked but floury. It’s also lightly spicy, showing some white pepper and a hint of coriander. Something about this reminds me of Hennepin, and it lies in the floral/musty/bready department . . .

Taste (3.0): Herbal, strongly grassy bitterness hides a bit of a medicinal, phenolic undertone, and that’s really the dominant chord struck here. The body is extremely dry, with a rustic, pale, floury, bready, malt base, accentuated by yeasty phenols and extremely grassy hop compounds. Aside from some bright, lemony undertones, there’s no fruitiness to speak of here. It is moderately spicy, however, showing a decently peppery and herbal bite alongside the grassiness. This beer hits a lot of the right notes, but not in the right proportions.

Mouthfeel (3.75): Extremely dry, this beer is nothing if not “crushable”—at least in terms of feel. The body is easily on the light- side of medium-weight, lushly carbonated but still without much tingle or prickle to speak of, and exceedingly dry. Not quite TOO dry, but it’s up there.

Overall (3.25): As mentioned above, this beer hits a lot of the right notes, but not in the right proportions. It’s also missing some of the fruity esters that I love in saisons (particularly in the aroma), and the phenolic underside of the bitterness is kind of distracting. The floral grassiness, the “crushable” feel, the pale breadiness—all nice characteristics. But it’s missing balance, esters, and complexity.

Bottle poured into a De la Senne tulip. Clear, but cloudier as I got closer to the yeasty bottom of the bottle, straw-yellow color, with a huge four-finger, white head, which eventually sank to a thick frothy layer, lacing the glass nicely. At first, the nose on this was extremely funky and sulfurous, lots of wet hay, almost like an old bottle of Saison Dupont that's been sitting in the sunlight. Eventually it grew on me though, the sulfur mellowing and more grassy funk coming out. More funkiness in the taste, grass and hay, earthy and floral, leafy, with a little peppery spice, Belgian yeast, light notes of citrus. Again, this was kind of dirty at first, but after it breathed in the glass for a few minutes, I liked it a lot more. Light-medium body, crisp, dry mouthfeel. Decent overall. I'd go for it again.
