As the world of beer continues to expand, and is becoming more homogenous in taste, the classic stout of Ireland makes its way inland to Belgium as the De La Senne brewers try their hand at the dry dark ale.

Stouterik pours dark garnet, a smidgeon from black and red. With the nose hovering above, sweet char becomes pronounced with the character of burnt toast, dark chocolate, roasted nuts and coffee. Its taste of burnt sugar is characteristic of caramel and cola.

Across the middle, the sweetness quivers and the roast pulls forth- bittersweet chocolate pulls from the seared sweetness and highlights a calm nutty, coffee and cola taste as well. Woodish hops and aniseed spice play on the taste just ahead of finish.

Semi-dry and medium bodied, the ale closes with a sense of lightness (dangerously close to watering), light acrid char and campfire bitterness close the session even as colanut flavors persist in aftertaste.

Cola black with honeycombed beige froth.
A bit of roast but mostly flinty grain.
Espresso, some char, a bit of black currant, creme caramel sweetness .
Bit of char to finish and long bitter linger.
Just past light, slight cling, soft.

Thin, even at 4.5%. Lots of bitterness, which is not quite balanced by the complexity of flavor. Belgian stouts often have a unique take, but there's nothing special going on here - there are a thousand English beers like this (OK, maybe not quite so lean and roasty.)

Poured from 11.2oz bottle. In a Duvel glass, it looks virtually black, with a decently-sized, dark-ish head.

Smells very chocolatey, without any roastiness.

Taste is smooth, with something like vanilla and dry fruit notes ("very dry" prunes), chalkiness.

Enjoyable, and surprisingly relatively light. Just not amazing.

nice dark brown with a semi-creamy, frothy head.... looks beautiful
smell is kind of adjunct-like, commercial crappiness... this cant be from Belgium. this smells like American crap.
taste is much better than the smell. but still, not quality stuff. there's that little twang of 'something' that just lends to the credence that it is not a quality brew.... a bitterness like from a corn or something not really worthy. it's got a certain 'earthiness' which just seems to follow other brews of that aren't great. I guess it's decent for a drink, but i'm not buying it again. especially for the price.

Oh yes now this is a good irish dry stout. And brewed by a belgian!

Nose: Charcoal, mint, roasted chestnuts.

Taste: dry. Chocolate. Dark chocolate. Cream. Slightky astringent at the end. Basic but good. Nice and simple.

A pretty well made medium stout. You can keep looking for some complexity in the taste and can find it. I enjoyed it.
