Where trends in Belgian inspirations are being copied, attempted, revised and simplified; even so in the ale's homeland- De La Senne says enough to all that in their return to authenticity in a way that Belgium can remain proud. Turns out that Brussels is Calling in a big way...

The Pale Ale pours with a hazy golden color that depicts yeasty glitter that trickles down the glass. Its firm and frothy head is creamy in both its color and its texture as it holds firm throughout the session with ease. Classic Belgian lace decorates the glass in the beer's wake.

There's a cream-sickle scent that rises from both the beer's fruit-forward aroma and its sweet-tart scent. Its malty nose is bready with cookie dough until the fruit weaves in with orange, apple, pear and peach. A sense of mango and apricot. But its estery side is balanced by earthy spices: fresh white pepper, straw and vinous white wine notes cut into the malt and fruit as the first sip draws near.

To tatse, the ale is much more muddled- sure the malty-sweet taste takes command early, but a quick rebuttal of spice and hops give up its honeysucke and hay-like properties for an early bite to accompany its bitter taste. As the bitterness strengthens, the taste of wet hay, fresh-cut grass, and spicy hops become rye-like and peppery. But with that waft of fruit, a floral sense continues into finish that when coupled with its bitterness is somewhat soap-like.

The beer's medium-light palate is due to its effervescent creaminess that wraps around the sweet malts and estery fruit character. But after that expressive carbonation lifts, a spicy, earthy and bitter dryness takes hold. Finishing with white wine and wood, its spicy bitterness hinges on astringency but never fully crosses over.

Calling Brussels it a highly complex ale but is also effortless in its flavor and drinkability. Its a remarkable beer in all the variance that it delivers, but its smooth mouthfeel and refreshing bitter-dry-spicy finish makes a pairing with escargot and goat cheese nearly irresistible.

Bottle from Belmont Station.

Pouring a clear light orange (until I dump the yeast in, at which point it turns hazy), this beer is capped with a dense, white head with excellent retention and gorgeous lacing. On the nose and the palate, this is all that I love about Taras Boulba, appropriately amped up. A soft, hoppy nose with peach, pineapple, honeydew melon, along with honey, cotton candy and a little bit of vanilla cream. Beautiful balance. The palate's similar, opening with a gorgeous balance between hop flavor (peach, melon), hop bitterness (pine-like) and malt (cotton candy, white honey). There is also a touch of peppery flavor here. Drying and mildly resiny on the finish, this beer is highly but creamily carbonated, leaving a blend of honey, pineapple and peach on the finish. Exquisite.
