The first beer in a trio of Orkney beers drank in The Plough, Shifnal during a CAMRA pub crawl on 14th Dec 13.

Hand-pulled half-pint: dark brown with a red hue, on top an off-white blanket of foam.

The nose and taste were over roasted, almost burnt malts that gave a dark chocolate and ground coffee bean aroma and flavour. Semi-bitter in the aftertaste this is a good traditional Mild and well worth seeking out. Full bodied and almost rich (for a Dark Mild) in texture.

Drunk at the Bow Bar Edinburgh Friday August 5th, 2011

Deep deep brown to black sparkle. Shiny. Almost opaque. Super complex intricate magnolia coloured lacing. Beautiful roasty nutty smell.

To taste there is complex chocolate, some smooth earth and a roasty sous bois leafish flavour that begins softly. By the middle it loses some of this complexity and leaves a firm dry dark coating throughout the mouth but it never loses its smoothness nor balance. A remarkably well intergrated beer with its every quality perceivable to the senses yet these qualities merge together to make a solid welcoming whole. Hops just aren't really much of a factor here.

Quite probably the best Scottish mild I have ever had. Simply stunning.

Highland Dark Munro
On gravity at Belfast Beer Fest, ‘14.
Cola-brown with tan parchment film. 3.75
Charcoal, black grape raisin, brown bread dough and forest floor on the nose. 4
Plum skin, dried autumn leaf, dark treacle tang, touch of roast and tannins - no hops. 3.75
Chocolaty end and lean linger.
Med, round, clingy 4

Dark malts, clean finish, no sweetness - no sharp edges. Balanced almost to a fault. An understated - which is to say successful - dark mild. 3.75
