Appearance: Pours a fairly hazy orange color with lighter golden highlights. About 1" of off-white head forms, which has decent retention and lacing.

Smell: Smells strongly of citrus, mostly of the orange rind type. No pine apparent, but quite a bit of dankness is.

Taste: A hint of pale malts, but mostly dominated by citrus and orange rind. Dankness on the back end, with a minute amount of alcohol and quite a bit of citrus flavors on the finish.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Lighter bodied but very smooth going down due to the moderate, fine carbonation. Overall, a very solid IPA. Nice citrus flavors, but a bit one dimensional in the end. Still, definitely something I would have again.

A: Pours a clear orangish color, good sized 2 finger width frothy white head, excellent head retention
S: Smell is very fragrant of citrusy hops and lots of them. Love the smell of this beer.
T: Little bit of malt, just enough to balance out but aftertaste is very citrusy, very hoppy.
M: Perfect amount of carbonation, goes down real easy.
D: This is an awesome IPA, doesn't get much better really. If you like good a good citrusy hop bomb this is your beer.

Drank within an hour of filling the growler which was purged with CO2

L: Very thin white head, nice hazy orange body and some good lacing as well.

A: Ruby Red Grapefruit, citrus rind, pine, and some zesty and fruity complexities. Malt is noticeable as well, nice rich breadiness.

T/M: Starts out with a firm bitterness, moves into ruby red grapefruit, pine, and citrus rind hops. Malt comes in with a superb balance, very nice, rich bready notes without the caramel sweetness that many IPAs fall victim to. The carbonation is subtle and the mouthfeel smooth and dry. Exquisite balance.

Overall, a superb IPA, reminds me of Boneyard Brewing's RPM IPA. It is seriously that good.

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – The beer is served a deep amber color with a one finger head of fizzy white foam. The head fades rather fast leaving just a tiny bit of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell- The aroma of the brew is strong of a citrus smell with tons of grapefruit and tangerine. Along with these smells are some other aromas of caramel and a little bit of a doughty smell, overall giving a somewhat sweeter, but balanced smell overall.

Taste – The taste begins with a bit of a cracker and sweeter fruit taste of tangerine and pear. Right at the start there is a decent showing of grapefruit hop, which grows stronger as the taste moves on. Along with these flavors other flavors of a light floral and herbal nature come to the tongue which, when mixed with the rest, take the taste to its end and end up leaving a drier more bitter, slightly unbalanced taste on the tongue..

Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the average to lightly chewier side with a carbonation level that is rather average. For the style it was rather appropriate, but nothing all that exceptional, and created a decent base for the brew overall.

Overall – Not really an IPA that I would frequent all that often, as it was a little drier, without having a great malt or balanced hop base. One to try if you are a hop head (as you may very well enjoy; dependent on your preferences) but one I will not go to all that often.

Stopped by tap room before opening time to fill a growler. Had the good fortune to catch the brewmeister on the premises, and sampled several varieties. The Derailed IPA is one of Carter's signature brews. Others are also excellent.

This IPA has pronounced hop bitterness, but good balance with malt. Very dry finish, lingering after-taste. Clear copper to gold in color, nice head retention. Aroma not distinctive, but that didn't detract from taste. Not a session beer for those who don't really love hoppy beers. I could drink it all night.
