Pours black with a good amount of tan head. Smell is coffee and malt with a hint of chocolate. The taste is a boozy chocolate with a lot of coffee. you van also get a hint of raisins or dates. Absolutely delicious. The mouthfeel is creamy and smooth with a good amount of carbonation. This is an amazing beer that I hope Tallgrass will keep making.

I really enjoy this outing from Tallgrass. It took me a while to "get" the acronym, but it finally set in. This is a good take on the Russian Imperial, and the chocolate and coffee add to the flavor profile without overpowering them.

Black as night and impenetrable to light with a fingernail of dark beige on top. All I detect in the aroma is dark boldly roasted coffee. The taste is a burst of dark roasted coffee with light notes of chocolate appearing at the back of the palate. This is absolutely packed with flavor and aroma of coffee! The mouth is thick, viscous, and chewy.

Poured from a 12 oz. can into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours jet black with a moderate amount of bubbles. About a finger of tan head that settles into a thin patch. Lots of creamy lacing.

Smell: A roasty and rich dark malt driven aroma with a good scent of coffee beans and chocolate. Dark roasted barley malt with hints of coffee beans, dark chocolate, cocoa nibs, grains, biscuit, oats, caramel, smoke, and yeast. Sweet hints of molasses and brown sugar. Subtle hints of dark fruit and earthy hops. A pretty nice roasty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a rich and roasty dark malt driven taste with notes of coffee and chocolate. Dark roasted barley malt with big notes of coffee beans, chocolate, cocoa nibs, oats, grains, biscuit, toast, smoke, caramel, and yeast. Sweet taste of brown sugar and molasses. Light dark fruit undertones of raisin and cherry. Subtle notes of earthy hops. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and fairly slick. Alcohol heat is hidden well.

Overall: A very good Coffee Imperial Stout. Good roasty malt flavors with a smooth creamy body.

12oz can poured into a stout glass. Initially fridge temp, allowed to warm. Best flavors came through around 51-53 degF (I was playing with my laser thermometer, but most stouts rock in that range).

Dark brown body. Lovely mocha-tan colored head. Small but noticable head. Minimal lacing.

Standard roasty-sweet smell. Coffee is more evident on the pour.

Nice balance of roast, coffee, and chocolate in the taste. Balances the [potent] sweetness well (at least for my tastes).

Very nice texture. Smooth, thick, not cloying.

A very solid RIS. Nothing super special, but worth mentioning in the same breath as Narwhal, etc. It's about as good as is possible when just sticking with coffee & chocolate flavors, and not throwing-in more complexity, nitro smoothness, or barrel-aging. Probably one of the best beers I've had that came in a can, for whatever that's worth... maybe next time I'll try it straight out of the can and see if it's a portable beer?

Note to self: I liked it slightly better out of the XL snifter than the stout glass. Would probably give it a 4.25 from the snifter.

12 ounce can poured into a tulip.

Pours viscous and thick and produces an impressive oatmeal-colored frothiness. It all looks chewy and edible. 4.75

Chocolate, coffee, sweet malt all hit on the nose. A bit of booze and spicy hops. 4

Consistent with the nose, coffee and cream with some spiced notes like cinnamon or nutmeg. Creamy caramel and vanilla mixed with dark chocolate and some hop flavor. The finish sort of disappears except for the booze, but otherwise this is nice. 4

Creamy, sweet, robust up front, then dry, solvent-like and bitter with hops on the finish. It feels a bit hot, but not to the point of undoing the beer. 4

After having the underwhelming BBA Buffalo Sweat, this is an excellent redemption. Very flavorful, rich in body and flavor, and seeming to be a beer that will age superbly.

12 oz can poured into a snifter

A: deep coa blavk not much of a head but there is a film around the glass that is mocha colored

S: lots of a nice coffee smell smells like brewed coffee that is cold a light bit of bakers chocolate and some licorice as well

T: lots of coffee right through the swish n the tongue and then even more when you swallow with a splash of bitter chocolate on the end the beer has nice hints of licorce and malty goodness throught out but the coffee definately runs the show

M: medium mouth feel edging toward full but not quite beer finishes dryer and not as sweet as a lot of stouts

O: really solid stout I don't get a whole lot from the chocolate but the coffee is hige and it is a pretty damn good beer.

Certainly a Russian Imperial Stout, and to be confused with an American Double/Imperial Stout, as bitter hop flavor dominates the aroma and palate until the beer warms significantly; only then are coffee and chocolate subtly perceptible.

Pours a deep opaque black with a two finger mocha color head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, and roast malt. Taste follows with chocolate, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and roastiness. Mouthfeel is medium and not harsh. Overall, a very good RIS that benefits from the addition of the coffee and chocolate.

Pours an effervescent ebony with 2+ fingers of mocha colored head. Viscous, a hint of lacing & zero head retention

S: Mocha, roastyness, ash, & caramel once warm, trend more towards coffee then, ghost booze

T: Follows the nose, some char & smokeyness & a little vanilla, a little booze warmth, along with some pumpernickel. Coffee, vanilla, char, & a little booze warmth as this warms. Finishes dry with coffee, a whisper of figs, char & vanilla

MF: A little chewy, subtle carbonation, warming

Drinks pretty easy for the style & ABV, another winner from Tallgrass. Very impressed with this, will buy more if I see it for sure!

Nice looking imperial stout with a sizeable head that had good retention. Some spotty lacing is left down the glass. You can tell this is a big stout just by the aroma. Cannot really smell the alcohol but still you know that it is there. Notes of roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. Some fruity yeast esters as well. The alcohol is definitely the first thing I taste. But once I get past that I can get the mocha qualities from the coffee and chocolate that makes a nice combination. Mild roasted bitterness and flavor. Fruity esters of dark fruit comes in the finish. The alcohol heat keeps the stout flavors from lingering on the palate. Big body and really nicely carbonated.

A little too hot for my tastes but the coffee and chocolate comes through nicely and tastes nice.
