On a recent evening in Memphis, TN, the Blue Suede Brews had the privilege of opening a special gift provided by the fine people of Tallgrass Brewing. Trapped inside an unprinted, modestly marked, 16oz Crowler was Big RICC and Big RICC was fighting to get out.

At 10.5% ABV, Big RICC is a tad bit sneaky. The nose, warmly wafting of vanilla, bourbon, and lingering coffee notes, lures you in… yielding a fullness just short of wholly satisfying. Some beers are mean to be smelled, others are meant to be sipped, and this one is both.

On the tongue, the body is medium heavy with a slight bit of oiliness, I so love in a well-made Russian imperial stout. Light carbonation compliments the mouthfeel without making it effervescent… just enough to overcome the risk of being perceived as still.

Big RICC’s real showcase is the flavor. Abyss-deep roasted malts with an earthiness balanced by caramel-sweet cold-pressed coffee, dusty-chalk dry cocoa powder, and top notes of tangerine.

The finish is a fleeting experience which only momentarily leaves a wash of roastyness, quickly fading to a clean finish, inviting you back in for more.

Overall Big RICC is a well-balanced, fairly indulgent experience. Despite its big-boy 10.5% ABV, I found the alluring nose and clean finish making it perhaps a bit too easy to drink, but boy what a wonderful ride this beer is. Very well done, indeed.

I am personally excited the boys and girls of Tallgrass brewing have found their way to the home of Rock and Roll. With your show of generosity and brewing skills, you are welcome anytime. Cheers! (1,593 characters)
