Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is a Belgian Tripel that lives up to its name. Smooth and carefully crafted like a fine velvet painting, but with an 8.5% ABV this bird has some spurs! The beer pours a golden straw color with brilliant clarity. Topped with a lofty pure white head the beer has a wonderful floral nose, with subtle fruit notes. The taste is clean and crisp, with subtle fruit notes and a touch of candy like sweetness. The beer has a Champagne-like effervescent that provides a crisp offset to its sweet finish. While a pint glass is always nice, Velvet Rooster would also be at home in a tulip glass or Champagne flute.

Poured into a snifter

A: Opaque, golden with a white half finger head that dissipates pretty fast. Lots of lacing.

S: Floral, fruity, roses, Belgian yeast.

T: Follows nose with a slightly bitter, hoppy finish.

M: High with strong carbonation. Frothy and (yes) velvety.

O: A nice surprise coming from a can. Trippel meets farmhouse ale. Even smoother as it warms. Cock a doddle doo! Would drink more.

Can poured into wide chalice

A:Nice deep golden color hazy with white head that clears relatively quickly leaving a thin blanket of bubbles on the surface.

S:Reminds me of bread but not really yeast smell, roasting grain would probably be close.

T:Ok, roasted flavor is pretty forward, lightly sweet with lingering bitterness that grows with every sip.

M: not oily or thick but solid enough you're aware of the slightly higher gravity of the beer. Carbonation is mild and soft fits the bill well.

O: Decent beer, the bitterness takes over after a few sips and the roasted flavors and sugars disappear rather quickly leaving you with a bitter taste that lingers for a long time. Probably would pair well with a sweet chicken dish like a marsala, something to offset the bitter that just hangs. Most IPA's have a bitter that lingers but there are discernable characteristics of the lingering bitter this just...well...is. Not a session beer due to 8.5%ABV, a few of these and you're right as rain.

Poured out a hazy, golden color with a two-finger, off-white head of bubbly foam. It left sticky patches of lace on the glass.

It smelled estery fruitiness and yeast. Nice aroma of grains and light caramel, too.

Nice blend of spicy with a tasty fruitiness of apple and pear. Good grain flavor with a yeasty bite. Spicy with floral bitterness. The beer was good right out of the fridge, but after warming a bit, it really started to shine. Key: let it breathe a little before enjoying.

It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a dry, clean finish.

This is a very good tripel. The floral finish sets it apart in the style.

Received as an extra in a trade and poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a nice crystal clear golden hue with a fluffy almost two finger head that fades to leave a thin little cloud with light side lacing.

S - Aromas of cereal grains, tea leaves, biscuits, light cloves, super super faint esters. The bread/biscuit/grains here just ruin this one. Not really Belgian at all.

T - Taste is slightly more belgian. Light bubblegum notes, esters, soft banana and clove. Again though, I'm hit with tea, cereal grains, and biscuits. Even if this was an old tripel its ABV should keep this from becoming a mess.

M - Mouthfeel is quite nice, fair amount of carbonation makes it nice and crisp and clean with the ABV hidden quite well.

O - Overall, this was just an okay tripel, at best. Appearance and mouthfeel were pretty solid. The amount of biscuit here though just kills this.

Wish I had a proper glass for this but had to settle for a motel cup. Better than straight from the can I guess. Yes... a can, my first Belgian from a can.

A- Hard to judge but seemed to be the right color and clarity for the style. I didn't get the typical fluffy head you would expect from the Tripel style.

S- This is one yeasty brew. Bread, floral and fruit notes dominate with some funk in the background.

T- More yeast which is what seems to set Belgian ales apart. Almost distracting but then the mild bubble gum fruit notes kick in with just enough bitterness to keep it from being too cloying.

M- More body than any Tripel I have tried. Velvet describes it well. Not quite to style but interesting.

O- A good interpretation of a Tripel. Slightly off beat and pushing the envelop.
