This beer is a Belgian Tripel that lives up to its name. Smooth and carefully crafted like a fine velvet painting, but with an 8.5% ABV this bird has some spurs! The beer pours a golden straw color with brilliant clarity. Topped with a lofty pure white head the beer has a wonderful floral nose, with subtle fruit notes. The taste is clean and crisp, with subtle fruit notes and a touch of candy like sweetness. The beer has a Champagne-like effervescent that provides a crisp offset to its sweet finish. While a pint glass is always nice, Velvet Rooster would also be at home in a tulip glass or Champagne flute.

Pours pretty. An orange straw with pearl white head - nice lacing with minor retention. Smells fresh and good. Some lemon, some wheat, some earthy notes. Not a huge nose, but present and pleasant. Ho man, this is good stuff. Velvet is a proper descriptor for the initial taste. Quite thick and very smooth. Sweet to start, it melds into a yeasty, bready blanket that lays fat on the tongue. The alcohol is present but not offensive in the least. It ends rounded and sweet with some minor carbonation. Good at Tallgrass for constructing such a tasty brew.

16 ounce can of tasty, yeasty and flavorful 8.5% Belgian Tripel, brewed in Kansas, God Bless America!

It has a "Drink By" date towards the bottom of the can, but I cant really make out the important details.

Pours hazed dull tangarine and sporting an initially 2 inch and then a white 1/2 inch cap that flexes impressive retentive powers and leaves nice looking froth,patches, strands and fine bits of stick.

Fruity and sweet nose with some lime, coriander and yeasty/wheatyness.

On the tongue and palate, this is a flavorful, moderatly spiced and fruity take on the style. More yeast, coriander, lime, candy sugar sweetness in the finish.

Carbonation a bit soft, but that seems to only add to the drinkability...dangerous, oh so dangerous...

Love the style, love this take on it and really love that I am enjoying a quality Tripel, in a can, brewed in Kansas! I'd have this one in my regular rotation if I could get it locally or if I lived in Kansas....

Serving glass: Poured from can into Tulip.

Appearance: Very hazy orangish yellow with decent sized head.

Smell: The yeast is very apparent at first, with banana and clove. After a few minutes, the lemon citrus and spicy, grassy hops become more apparent (Saaz?)

Taste: Similar to the aroma, the banana and clove come barreling out of the gate, along with fleshy fruit, lemon and white pepper. Toward the finish, and especially as it warms, the hops really stand out. However, the hops are very straw- and hay-like, and distracted me a little.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, with a medium body that is more sticky than effervescent. Could have used more dryness on the finish.

Overall: Despite some minor issues with the hoppy, yet not dry, finish, this is a strong US-made Tripel, especially at the price point. And it comes in a Pint can!

Light golden hued with great clarity. A quarter inch of off white foam rests on top and there is light Brussels lacing. I smell faint light malt and Belgian candy sugar. There's a sweetness of light malt and Belgian candy sugar in the flavor. The mouth is moderately carbonated and dry. The sweetness in the flavor is slightly cloying.

Poured from 16 oz. can into a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a very cloudy golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big four finger white foam head with decent retention. Leaves lots of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A pretty sweet and yeast driven aroma. Good amount of Belgian yeast with a hint of clove and pepper. Bready pale malts and some good hints of citrus orange, pineapple, and lemon. Also some big hints of Belgian candied sugar. Light presence of grassy hops in the background.

Taste: Upfront is some Belgian yeast with some pepper and clove spice. Notes of Belgian candied sugar. Wheat and pale malts add some bready sweetness. Good notes of citrus orange, lemon zest, and pineapple. Very subtle hint of hops. Taste is balanced and not overly syrupy although not as strong as one might expect from the style.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp and creamy. Sweet but not overly syrupy. Alcohol is hidden very well.

Overall: A solid American take on a Tripel. Could of been stronger in the spices but it avoids the overly sweet flavor that some American Belgian style beers have.

Although I have to say that the Velvet Rooster is my least favorite beer from Tallgrass Brewing, it's still a pretty decent ale.

What I don't like about it is exactly what I love about their other beers, the rich maltiness. Here, coupled with the yeast and spice flavors, I find it to be a bit much. Moving forward...

It pours a hazy, deep golden body beneath a creamy head of white. The initial lacing is quite nice, but beyond that it becomes limited to spots and small streaks. It does maintain a decent collar of foam however.

In the nose it's floral (hibiscus), fruity (apple, soft pear), and spicy (cardamom, green/black pepper, clove). I also get a bit of that chalky yeastiness sometimes found, but not much. Surprisingly missing is the malt that's so solid in the flavor.

The flavor, as noted, displays a rich maltiness that's grainy, and sweet. The floral character remains intact, along with some gently grassy hop notes. The yeast spice is intact as well... or is that a combination of yeast AND actual spice? It's firmly bitter beneath the malt, and along with the spiciness and light mineral and floral character it finishes drying as the malt fades.

In the mouth it's medium-bodied (fuller than I normally think of a tripel) and gently bristling.

Overall it's not a bad beer - it's just not what I think of as a "tripel".

Pours a nice off-white head with good retention and nice lacing. Brew is golden and remarkably clear - transparent.

Aroma is not particularly inviting; aspirin, Belgian sugar, wheat, a slight citrus note from hops, wet cardboard from stale hops, and a hint of bubblegum yeast hiding in the background.

Flavor is a lot better than the aroma; it's pretty good, actually. Too much staleness on the front end, and a little too much bubblegum coming in the middle and end. Past that, there are still some nice citrus and pine hops remaining, and a classic Belgian Tripel bit of spicy, yeasty flavor.

Grainy, lively mouthfeel; a surprising amount of back-end heat. Sticky finish.

An Americanized Tripel, to be sure; I recommend drinking this fresh. It seems that age has not done it any favors. I certainly wouldn't reach for this over a Belgian tripel, or even over Allagash's version, but it's not a bad beer.

On tap at the Pig & Fiddle in Edina. Had this next to a friend that was enjoying the St. Feuillien Tripel. This is an admirable take on the style, but can't quite stand up to the Belgian counterpart. The aroma is a little too messy and spicy, like a farmhouse ale. There's a light, crisp lemon note, but this beer is on the earthy side. The body is appropriately crisp, but the yeast character sends this into the realm of saisons.

S: So funky and grassy and musty and grainy--lots of lemon, bananas, and other citrus but also lots of barnyard grassy grains and bready--really bready, toast malts

T: Still bready with subtle banana and lemon and coriander--grainy and slightly funky

F: That yeast brings a nice creaminess: great mouth feel

O: This is a really nice Trippel--so creamy, yeasty, bready, slightly funky, mmmm

Poured into a tulip glass. Hazy golden color with an amazing two fingers of tight head.

Smells like apricot, wet hay and banana. It's kind of musty all around though.

Sweet, really sweet, then grainy, watery and mild bitter ending.

Crisp and medium bodied, low carbonation.

Try it. It's not my favorite style, but it's drinkable.

Pours a hazy yellow-orange. Aroma is of flowers, slight fruit and belgian candi sweetness. Taste is fruit, floral notes, belgian candi sugar, and some earthiness. Mouthfeel is medium and quite effervescent. Overall, this is a good trippel, and a nice beer to sip and savor as it warms.

Pours an effervescent amber with a pinky of beige colored head. Above average head retention & slight lacing

S: Much pear & white grapes up front, scent fades as this warms

T: Pears, sweet white grape juice, a touch Winesap apple up front. A touch of earthy funkyness once warm, pineapple as well, some dryness, plus a whisper of phenols. Finishes with some band-aid notes, fruitty pear

MF: Medium bodied, fairly subtle carbonation that picks up as it warms

I think I liked this better on draft about a year ago, but this is indeed a solid Tripel well worth a go. The 8.5% abv is well hidden, procede with caution!

I love the design on the can, very artsy

Pours a hazy golden color with two fingers of head that had good retention. The head eventually settles to a thick cap. Moderate amount of sticky lacing is left on the glass.

I am not too thrilled with the aroma. A lot of yeast gives it a very bready smell. The yeast gives off some phenols adding some spice.

The beer takes another turn in the flavor department. Still very yeast dominate. Has a nice pale malt flavor. Some fruit hints but more on the spicy side. Somewhat dry. Alcohol is well hidden.

Solid body with nice carbonation. Has a little fizz in the finish that I enjoyed.

A tripel in a can is nice. Still have to deliver in the flavor department and it fell just a little short compared to the Belgian greats.

Poured from 16 oz can into tulip glass. Dated to enjoy by 11/04/2014.

A: Pours a light straw yellow with 2-3 finger fluffy off white head that seemed to last forever. Heavy sticky lacing,

S: Belgian yeast esters and a slight grassy funk. Banana and bubblegum. Rose petals and a bit of clove and pepper.

T: Ripe banana and biscuits. Belgian candy sugar. Some familiar flavors of a typical tripel, but not a strictly traditional one. Tends almost a little sweet.

M: Full bodied but with a champagne like carbonation. Fairly crisp finish that helps to offset the sweetness a bit.

O: Very drinkable and enjoyable brew. Maybe not a classic Belgian trippel, but a very good American version. Will have to grab a few more of these next time I'm through the midwest.

Woodychandler continues to amaze me with his variety of canned beers. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a deep golden color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of fruits and yeast. Taste is also big on yeast, some fruits and spices. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a high quality beer.

Had at least 2 cans of this, review from written notes. Julian code "12 331" printed on the bottom lip of the can. Snazzy psychedelic hippie/batik print can design, reminds me a little of Mexican folk art, or something along those lines.

Murky golden orange with suspended sediment, clinging bubbles in the glass. A spotty ring of lacing remains with the second pour, after the thin layer of creamy white foam settles.

Pepper, cloves, and Belgian yeast aromas dominate, it's rather phenolic and spicy.

Coarse and earthy with more spice phenolics, pepper and clove, sweet bubblegum, midpalate smoothness of dry cracker and honey. Full bodied and dry, lightly prickly carbonation. A somewhat bitter aftertaste of botanical grassiness.

Overall a good Tripel that leans heavily to the spicy side of the spectrum, not especially balanced or nuanced in taste. The addition of a little sweetness and fruit would go a long way here.

Was about to reach for Oasis when my eye caught this psychedelic rooster next to it. Further read the label, found out it was a new Tallgrass for the area, so off it went to my place.

A big Belgian in a can. Interesting concept. Catch a whiff upon cracking open the can of banana- and melon-like notes created by the yeast, plus a lot of straight-up residual sweetness. Mug fills a blurry, highly fizzy burnt light orange, biscuity head. Additional slight peppery smell pops up on the pour.

The peppery bit opens out on the tongue to more of a subtle cinnamon, while all other flavors follow the smell suggestion. The carbonation is more subdued than it looks on swig, so it actually goes down a bit creamier than the average tripel, a slight different spin on it in feel while still nailing the traditional flavor.

Well cockadoodledoo, this rooster has soul. I can dig it...

A: Pours a slightly hazy yellow with a finger of white head that fades into a thin cap with little lacing.

S: Some light fruit and candy sugar notes up front followed by some DMS vegetable-like aromas coming after. The finish smells of chalky yeast.

T: Belgian spices up front followed by faint candy sugar and bubblegum notes. Slightly bitter yeast notes follow with a light alcohol presence and an aftertaste of veggies.

M: Medium-light body with highish carbonation that feels a bit too frothy on the tongue. The sudsy carbonation feel and alcohol presence keep it from being crisp, though it avoids being thick and sweet.

O: A pretty average tripel. The DMS presence in the aroma and flavor really hold it back.

8.5% ABV, Drink By 02/21/14

A - Shimmering golden in color, this clear beer is crowned with a lofty but fleeting white head. The loose foam crumbles away to a halo of suds leaving delicate wisps of lace on the glass.

S - Velvet Rooster smells the part of a Belgian tripel with it's open and deep Belgian yeast aroma. Spiciness flourishes with notes of banana and a dash of white pepper circling around the clove and lemongrass while a fragrant floral note overlaps the malt. Sweet pilsner malt and Belgian candi sugar lay the ground work for all the yeast esters.

T - The aroma's more subtle sweetness really pushes forward in flavor oppressing the yeast esters quite a bit as Velvet Rooster starts with caramel and pilsner malt and moves in to a lingering impression of Belgian yeast. Those flavors of banana, clay, white pepper, and lemongrass return with an an addition of fruity alcohol notes and an earthy finish of grass clippings and earth.

M - Sticky and sweet starting, Velvet Rooster evens out with a minor thinning alcohol bite and spicy, lingering feel. Medium bodied, this nicely carbonated tripel finishes well on the back of the throat.

O - Velvet Rooster is a fine Belgian style tripel that showcases what yeast can really add to a beer; spice, sweetness, and earthy hops all blend well with a kiss of alcohol on the finish for a delectable brew!

Poured from the can into a tulip glass.

From the can a nice creamy white head, fluffy, with about three fingers not so uniform sits on a orange/brown and opaque body. Nice rising pinhead columns of carbonation.

Nose is interesting. Mild belgian classic sense of thick malt and sugar, but a nice mix of pastry like butter and sweet croissant. Is this a fault that works? Cream. Faint dry spices but more malt and sweetness are apparent than anything. I call good.

Palate is a bit muted. Hop angle hints toward Belgian IPA on the finish, light malts bring forth by quite a good solid fulll mouthfeel body that should hint at the richness but doesn't quite get there. Mild finish of butter and hop, there is not much rich sweetness on this though. It's a very different tasting tripel than I can think of what I've had. Doesn't come off to boozy either.

Overall I don't mind this, I am sort of really just above borderline. IT's very unique and interesting, but it's also missing lots of things I like in this style particularly a sense of richness and sweetness (but not too sweet). I could have this again, but don't desire to.

Served in a 12oz tulip for $5.75. Saw this one being offered at my local and had to get my Kansas "tick" out of the way. Sampled 2/29/12.

A: An enormous head on the pour erupts to at least 5 fingers. A subsequent pour by the bartender pushes the excess out. Arrives with a bright white, compact foamy cap that remains for quite some time. As the beer goes down, sheets cling to the top half of the glass while leggy strands of lace extend down to the surface. The body is a brown shade of yellow, cloudy if not a bit murky. Not a particularly attractive color but everything else is on point.

S: The nose is full of grain and plain cereal, a mixture between grass and hay and something reminiscent of wheat. The yeast gives off light esters, dominated by neither clove or banana. This is exactly how I like my tripels to smell.

T: The aromas don't translate quite as successfully to the palate, but the flavor is still very good. Grainy, grassy, yeasty - striking a nice balance between sugar and spice. Moderately sweet with a spicy bite and ample bitterness on the finish.

M: Wonderful. And very accurate to the style. Medium full body. The carbonation is lively at first and a gently bite on the end. Moderately sweet upfront with an appropriately dry, crisp finish.

O: Tallgrass has a very solid tripel in their roster with Velvet Rooster. While it isn't exactly a standout, this beer will hold it's own in the category, especially for an American brewery.

From the can into an IPA glass. Big head, takes two minutes or so to fade leaving a bit of lacing, not much.

A- Beautiful light orange color...looks inviting.

S- Wet, musty aroma...kinda like it.

T- Get a little clove and funky barnyard mustiness...similar to the nose.

M- Very soft and pleasant.

O- Probably not a great Triple but I like it. Easy drinking and pleasant....nothing offensive at all. Like the Brewery description says...I'd like to do it next time from a Champagne flute.

A - pours a hazed golden apricot color with a finger of head that recedes to a nice fresh collar through out

S - malt, belgian yeast, lemon pepper, some sweet bread

T - interesting take on the style, its sweet with light colored fruits grapes and apples, it then has a lemon tartness with sweet malt/bread

M - just right

O - this is my favorite offering to date from Tall Grass

Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery snifter. No freshness date.

A- Pours a hazy medium amber color with a 3/4 inch off-white head that retains very well before slowly relinquishing to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and random bubbly surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a thin ring behind.

S- Lots of hay and lemongrass with a bit of barnyard funk. The Belgian yeast in this is less rich and more subdued.

T- The flavor isn't as complex and enticing as the aroma. Fairly average Tripel taste with some moderate wheat malt, slight spice and a noticeable alcohol presence.

M- Also quite average. Slightly sharp from the hops, booze and medium carbonation. The body leans toward the fuller side of things.

O- The aroma of this beer is deceiving as it tricks you into thinking great things lie ahead. In the end, it's just your standard Tripel.

A: The beer is hazy golden yellow in color and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin bright white head that gradually died down but never completely faded away, leaving lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: There are aromas of sweet malts and Belgian yeast in the nose along with notes of spices and hints of lemon. The citrus becomes a little stronger as the beer warms up.
T: The taste is quite malty for a tripel and has notes of Belgian yeast and spices. There are some hints of lemon citrus in the finish, which also has lingering notes of peppery spices.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The finish leaves a bit of dryness in your mouth.
O: This beer definitely tastes strong but the alcohol is well hidden from the taste. It’s not a bad tripel considering it came from a can.
