Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is a Belgian Tripel that lives up to its name. Smooth and carefully crafted like a fine velvet painting, but with an 8.5% ABV this bird has some spurs! The beer pours a golden straw color with brilliant clarity. Topped with a lofty pure white head the beer has a wonderful floral nose, with subtle fruit notes. The taste is clean and crisp, with subtle fruit notes and a touch of candy like sweetness. The beer has a Champagne-like effervescent that provides a crisp offset to its sweet finish. While a pint glass is always nice, Velvet Rooster would also be at home in a tulip glass or Champagne flute.

Pours a nice off-white head with good retention and nice lacing. Brew is golden and remarkably clear - transparent.

Aroma is not particularly inviting; aspirin, Belgian sugar, wheat, a slight citrus note from hops, wet cardboard from stale hops, and a hint of bubblegum yeast hiding in the background.

Flavor is a lot better than the aroma; it's pretty good, actually. Too much staleness on the front end, and a little too much bubblegum coming in the middle and end. Past that, there are still some nice citrus and pine hops remaining, and a classic Belgian tripel bit of spicy, yeasty flavor.

Grainy, lively mouthfeel; a surprising amount of back-end heat. Sticky finish.

An Americanized Tripel, to be sure; I recommend drinking this fresh. It seems that age has not done it any favors. I certainly wouldn't reach for this over a Belgian tripel, or over Allagash's version, but it's not a bad beer.

Poured from 16oz can into a tulip. I believe that this is my first tripel from a can!

Appearance: medium golden hue with a light haze and a light effervescence. Head is two fingers of pillowy ivory foam with good retention; a nice chunky lace is left on the glass as it slowly dissipates.

Smell: sweetly malty with a nice, smooth tripel character. There is a pretty big hop element to the aroma as well; not exactly traditional but quite well-executed, I think. The hops are slightly lemony and very green and fresh.

Taste: flavor is quite like the aroma, with quite a bit of malt sweetness and a heavy hop presence for a tripel. I think it doesn't quite work as well as in the aroma, but in general it's pretty good.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess. i always like more creaminess in a tripel, but this is good enough.

Overall: a little hoppy, but in general a very satisfying tripel.
